You said "for units use quotes". That is exactly what I would like to do. But this DOES NOT WORK properly if you have units that contain fractions! This is very common in science simple examples would be 5 {%my "W"} over "sr" or "W" = {"kg" cdot "m"} over {"s"^2} I do know the workarounds for this problem now. But these workaround are to tedious for me to use them in every single formula. So my lecture presentation will probably have many of these ugly fraction units in it. If a student asks me, I can only tell him that OO does not WANT to improve on this behavior. It's a pity. PS: This issue is a dublicate of #89081 which is still open and scheduled for OO3.x. I simply hope that this means that it is planned for OO3.1.1 and will vote for it. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. BUT to my current knowledge of typesetting it is normally ment to be part of the formula as soon as it is part of a fraction. The reason is this: variables in formulas are usually displayed in italic letters, but constants are to be displayed in upright letters. This has in most scientific textbooks the result that function names (sin, cos,...) as well as units (m, s, W, km,...) are displayed in upright letters. The easiest way to get upright letters in the OO formula editor seems to be the usage of quotation marks (I know there are different ways to achieve this, but they are too complicated for everyday use...). As a result in all my (scientific) formulas there are quoted parts of the text, that should be treated as normal part of the formula, just in upright letters. Conclusion: an implicit 'alignl' for quoted text might be useful in general. But in fractions this is annoying in my eyes, there should be an 'alignm' default behavior. Footnote: The current behavior leads to unexpected and surprising formula typesetting, that give the impression of inconsinstency, just try the following: {a+b+c+d} over {4 cdot "A"} = {a+b+c+d} over {"A" cdot 4} - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. Quoted text has an implicit 'alignl' as pre-fix, since usually that one is NOT used as formula part but only for additional text descriptions for the formula. However you can work around the issue by writing {{}"hello"} over {a+b+c+d} Since lines starting with a formula are by default center aligned. And the empty group statement {} before "hello" counts as a formula as well. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. Insert a new formula object into Writer or Impress (or probably any other OO component) 2. Use the following as formula source code: "hello" over {a+b+c+d} 3. The resulting formula will have the denominator properly centered, but not the nominator with the quoted text :( This kind of formula appears quite regularly. For example in physical equations with numbers and units (as quoted text) in it. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker.
