I agree that this should be fixed.

Some people -- e.g. those using Mac (it happened to me today!) -- don't know
about using the extra 'x'. I couldn't open the file at all, not knowing about
the Filter Selection, and I had to ask the sender to send it in a different
format. (Of course, now I know how to open it, but think about how many people
in the world will be saying, OpenOffice says it can open Microsoft Word
documents, but look, it can't!)

If OO can't open a .doc file, please let it automatically check whether the MS
Word 2007 XML format would work.

I cannot confirm that nothing happens. But true is, what jbfaure stated, you get
the Filter selection box and then after choosing Microsoft Word 2007 XML the
document will be opened.

MRU-MAV: nevertheless the document should be recognized automatically. It also
works when you try to open doc format having RTF extension e.g.
