When I order a home-delivered Pizza, I expect the salt, pepper, ketchup and
oragano sachets WITH the pizza (inside the same box).

In this case, I get the pizza, but I have to go to the pizzeria to fetch the
other things! :)

First of all, when the file is saved locally, the natural expectation is to save
the images locally also. So we should not have to break the links individually.

In other words, when a web-page is saved locally, the default should be "embed"
not "link".

Breaking the link for individual image is tedious. If we forget to do it even
for one image, it will be lost when the connection is broken!

*

BTW I noticed one thing that I should have mentioned in the beginning: I wanted
to copy the relevant part of the web-page and paste it into a dot file. On the
other hand, when I load the URL directly in Writer and then want to save the
file, Writer offers a few file formats, which does NOT include "dot" format.

I do not know if the dafault formats offered by Writer behave differently so far
as saving images is concerned. The "dot" documents have the problem described
here.

If I want the images to be embedded, I simply go to Edit - Links - Break Link
while the connection to internet is open. Does that don't work for you?

Changing the behaviour of Writer in that way, that this will be done
automatically, means that Writer and Writer/web will work different when copying
web content to it, because in HTML it is by definition of HTML not possible to
embed an image.

Raindrops -> es

When I revisited this issue to check progress, I noticed that you have said the
the same thing about browsers in offline state (EITHER it is not able to connect
at all OR it displays stored info from its cache.) I mistook that statement as a
single case. Sorry about that...

BTW you have described the "File open" case, in which the web page is loaded
directly in Writer. You have pointed out the problem when the Internet
connection is lost (because Writer does not have cache like a browser).

Fair enough. But I did not have such an application of Writer in mind. Rather,
the desired scenario is like this:

The user is able to channelize (copy+paste or equivalent) the text+images in a
new file in Writer. Once that is done, the ENTIRE info is actually on the hard
disk (At this moment, this is exact equivalent of a newly created odt file that
is not saved yet.)

Now the info is under full control of Writer. Even if the PC crashes at this
moment, OOo would be able to recover the unsaved file; so there is no data loss
at all.

Integration of Writer and browser functionality is not required really.

Thanks.

Well, 'Simplicity of implementation' can NEVER be the criteria here:
Rather, it MUST be 'Usability for a given purpose'.

In other words, Can OOo serve the most common tasks in a user's working life (or
hobbies)?

If OOo fails that test, the user will turn to the other option: Microsoft
Office.

So let us examine the merit of this case from THAT point of view.

First, let us examine whether this is a common need.

Thanks to the sheer volume of available information and searchability, Internet
has become THE single source of information for a vast majority of users.

A user can exploit this information in the following incremental steps:
1. Simply search Internet for a given topic and browse the websites.
2. After step-1, save the information "as it is" (low-end use), or
3. Collate information from multile sites and then edit it, to form a body of
knowledge (high-end use).

We already have excellent freeware like Mozilla for step-1. OOo cannot add much
value there.

For steps 2 and 3, Mozilla's Composer can serve to a limited extent. However, if
you want to do some in-depth work, then an Office product is needed (i.e., Word
processor or a spreadsheet). Typically, the user would copy and paste the
text+images from MULTIPLE websites; and then edit the contents, add his own
content, add graphs, etc.

If an Office product cannot do that, it is simply not relevant for the users of
today.

(Are we saying, "Either don't do it, or use MS Office till we develop that
feature"?) ;)
***
In fact, what I said above is NOT my own thinking: Look at what the OOo strategy
for 2010 (http://marketing.openoffice.org/strategy/v0.5.pdf) says about role of
Internet for the future of OOo:

"The Project contends that a single package that helps a large population
address the most common tasks in their working lives is incomplete without at
least email and web browser capabilities."

While having a built-in browser may be the long-term goal, the least that can be
expected from an Office product is to BE compatibile with Internet (browsers).

Users have already pointed out this shortcoming. This should be treated as a
URGENT issue to be resolved post-haste, not an "enhancement" that can be added
when convenient. In other words, this issue should be treated as P2 (not P3).

That brings us to the question of whether this is a P2 issue. You have stated
that there is no data loss involved. But that is INCORRECT: For the user, the
lifecycle of the data starts as soon he sees something of value in his browser.
The data lifecycle continues till the data is saved on his PC (either "as it is"
or in edited/compiled form). If OOo forces a break in the data-conversion chain,
it means a data-loss to the user. I hope you agree.

BTW you stated "If you turn off the Internet connection, the browser will
display nothing", but actually none of the browsers lose the contents when
connection is cut off. (It happens only if you refresh the page.)

Finally, we should have embedding as DEFAULT: No one would want a document where
the text is stored locally but all images are only at the website!

Even it may appear "very simple" to the user to copy/paste the content of a web
page from the browser to the word processor it IS tschnically NOT simple to
realize and Writer is not designed for this.

As explained below, the issue is an enhancement and a P3 (no data loss).

1) Writer is not a web browser: it may get some remote content (via copy paste
or File - Open) but has no cache like a browser.
If you turn off the Internet connection, the browser will display nothing (no
connection) or retrieve the saved info from its cache.
But Writer has no cache, so it cannot display the pictures offline.

2) Retrieveing info from other browser's cache: I don't know if the clipboard
can give the Writer all infos it needs to do this...
Ex: browser's name (IE, Opera, Fierfox), cache location, name of the cached
data???

3) Option to automatically embed remote content: yes it would be a great
enhancement. But Writer has not been designed for this -> enhancement.
One could imagine an option "Save remote content localy" in the general options
or "Embed image"... this must be designed.

Reassigning to Requirements

The issue is already confirmed, but its status still shows "UNCONFIRMED"!!

(Sorry to sound like a nag, but I am concerned that such issues may not receive
enough attention just because the database projects them as unconfirmed.)

Further to the discussion above, Writer should be able to pick up images from
browser even if it is now in "Offline" mode (or if the internet connection of
the PC is lost). The reason for this is, it is NOT necessary to pick up the
latest version of the images, but rather to save what is already browsed by the
user. Even if the website has constantly changing contents (e.g. Google News
page), the user would not like to save a different page than what he has seen.

So, Writer should pick up all contents (including the the images) directly from
the browser's cache, rather than reaching out once again to the original
website.

This will also reduce unnecessary load on the website server, freeing its
bandwidth for the use of its other users.

As also stated in issue 58736 (which has been marked a duplicate of this issue),
even saving the files locally, opening them in OOo Web, and copying from there
to OOo Writer does not solve the problem.

Confirmed - Windows XP, SP2, OOo-2.0

Agreed, OOo should copy and embed the images, rather than simply retaining their
URLs. (Alternatively, there might a setting or a dialog for activating the
embedding of the images.)

This is definitely a P2 for me. To a novice user, copying the html, saving, and
reopening later only to find the images missing is data loss.

I tried some more experiments and found that-

1. When the Internet connection is restored, the file does not display the
images.
(I somehow expected the images to reappear.) Since Writer does not have a
"refresh" button (like a browser), I don't know what to do.

2. Even after the Internet connection is cut off, the browser (Mozilla)
continues to show the images. But if I copy any part of the webpage and paste it
in the Writer, the placeholders are empty from the start. (I never get to see
the images in this case.)
