Sorry, but I will again close this issue.
A special environment like Ubuntu edgy 64 is not supported by the official OOo
build process.
Ubuntu itself is responsible for these builds, so please refer to the report you
filed to ubuntu.
Thanks for your patience.

Yes, it is the OOo 2.0.4 from the 64-bit Ubuntu repositories. That is the only
version currently in the repositories.
I realize that it is standard OOo advice to tell the user install the version
from OOo instead of the version released by the distro, but you cannot install
32-bit OOo on 64-bit Edgy unless you do so in a completely 32-bit environment,
e.g., with chroot, VMware, etc. I suppose I could try to compile from source,
but, given the complexity of OOo, I suspect that would create more problems than
it would solve. If OOo would make a 64-bit .deb file available I'd be more than
happy to give it a go.
I did try to follow that advice by installing 2.1 from 64-bit .debs I found
online (not from openoffice.org), but it did not resolve the drag and drop of
text problem. While those .debs were not official, the fact that the drag and
drop of text problem was not resolved by installing 2.1 tells me that it is not
a bug that was fixed in later releases.
This smells to me a lot like I either have something else installed that is
creating a conflict, or I am missing something that OOo requires for drag and
drop of text. If I knew what OOo uses for drag and drop of text I could possibly
sleuth it out on my own. For example, does OOo use a feature of Gnome for drag
and drop of text? Is there a library that drag and drop of text depends on? How
does the code work? And I can add that I also have a problem with some settings
in Tools > Options not being saved to the default template. I suspect the issues
are related.
I'm not a programmer, but I feel that I owe it to the community to do as much as
I can to help make OOo a better application for everyone.

I assume that this is NOT a standard OOo relesae, but rather, it is a release
built and maintained by the "edgy" people. I used to use OOo as distributed by
FC6 on AMD64, but it had numerous problems. They ALL went away after I removed
the 64 bit FC6 version, made certain I had 32 bit Java installed, and then
installed the standard OOo release version 2.1.

Since originally posting this bug I have completely removed 2.0.4, then
installed 2.1 from 64-bit .debs that I found online. This did not resolve the
drag and drop of text problem. Therefore, I now suspect that there is a problem
between OOo and Ubuntu Edgy amd-64, and the fault may lie more with Ubuntu than
with OOo. As a result I filed a bug report with Ubuntu as well:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org-amd64/+bug/85248
This smells to me of a conflict or a missing module, because it affects only a
small number of users of OOo 2.0.4 on Edgy amd64. Here is a thread on the Ubuntu
forums where it has been discussed:

@mru:
I read Mr. Jordan's commments and it appears that he is using Ubuntu Edgy and
you may want to try using that distribution for your testing.

This is a major problem for the user who posted this on the users@ forum.
Please get in contact with him so that we can work on a solution.
OpenOffice.org 2.1 did not install cleanly and left this user with an
unmanagable system. Also, this is a 64bit computer problem, did you test on
those systems as your notes did not state if this was done.

I cannot reproduce this problem. Tested it with OO 2.0.4 on WinXP, SUSE 10.1 and
Fedora Core 5.
Do you work on a certain Linux distribution, e.g. ubuntu or Fedora running the
by-packed OOo build? In this case, please refer to the distributors support or
even run the native OOo builds which can be downloaded from Openoffice.org.

I have been using OOo since StarOffice 5.something. I have never had a problem
dragging text around in a document, right up to version 2.02 on Ubuntu Dapper
amd64. But after upgrading to Edgy amd64 and OOo 2.04 I can no longer drag and
drop text around. I also cannot drag and drop a text selection onto the Stylist
window to create a new style.
Meantime, I can drag and drop text fine in Firefox and AbiWord, and any other
application that supports drag and drop of text.
I've spent hours researching trying to figure out what is wrong, but to no
avail. I have done a complete removal and reinstall without success. I have
found half a dozen other Ubuntu Edgy amd64 users with the same problem, and none
of them have found a solution. At the very least it would be a help if I could
find out what libraries and modules the drag and drop of text uses. Then I could
reinstall them. Right now I'm just completely stumped.
