I stepped through your list and the line to reinstall en_US-dict solved the issue. I have no idea why this wasn't installed correctly the first time. I don't recall seeing any errors or warnings during installation. My computer has been through several updates since OO_1.x, so maybe something was left. I performed some cleanup while trying to resolve this issue, and OO 3.0.1 is now working again! Issue resolved/fixed. So I'm marking it as resolved. Thanks again! And where did your OOo installation set come from? Right now I can only advise that you look for a file named Linguistic.xcu in your user profile and delete that file. It will be recreated on the next start. Maybe that file is corrupted or still holds some data from an older installation. On Windows boxes that file can usually be found in C:\Documents and Settings\_your_user_name_\Application Data\StarOffice9\user\registry\data\org\openoffice\Office\Linguistic.xcu The only other thing I can think of is that either your dictionary content is wrong or the dictionaries are misconfigured. You may also try to download and install one of the following dictionary extensions (namely if your Office installation was not directly obtained from the OpenOffice.org website): http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/project/en_US-dict http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/project/en_GB-oed After the installation you need to restart the office in order for things to work. I've uninstalled and reinstalled oo3.0.1 on this machine and this behavior remains (I also use the OpenSUSE Linux version 3.0.0, which works perfectly for me). I looked through the FAQ and Knowledge base and can't find a similar problem other than a very general Spell Check doesn't work. I verified the Format-Character... dialog does have the ABC English (USA) under Language. I believe something didn't install or configure correctly in my installation, but I haven't been able to find or resolve this issue yet.
