Are you saying that this is how I can tell if a soundfont is correctly

Thanks.

Sadly, still nothing happening with SBLive and MIDI.

I'm using pmidi with the command line

pmidi -p 65:0 myfile.mid

and have 2gmgsmt.sf2 loaded. (Is it possible to check if it's loaded
correctly?)

I'd appreciate any other suggestions.

I tried installing a soundfont, but still no sound. I'm using
2gmgsmt.sf2, which I believe is the default one under Windows.

I'm wondering if there's an easier way to check MIDI - I'm trying Muse
and RoseGarden, but might not be configuring them properly. I don't seem
to have a simple MIDI player.

In my logs, I keep seeing

Jun 4 08:11:54 localhost modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module
sound-slot-1
Jun 4 08:11:55 localhost modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module
sound-service-
1-0

I'm not sure if this is related.

I find I can play soundfonts in Ssami, but they tend to crackle.

The device_mode module option is not available when your kernel doesn't
use devfs. You can delete this option from your modules.conf, or simply
ignore the warning.

[Alsa-user] AZT1008, which driver?

2003-06-04 Thread Dave

Hi, I'm tring to get alsa working, but I'm a bit of a hardware dummy :D

OSS worked sometime ago on this HPVectra. The search page doesnt work and
I dont see a listing for AZT1008. There is a line in modules.conf for
ad1848 and a bunch of other stuff left over from OSS. So I though I would
try that, but I get...
kernel: ALSA ../../alsa-kernel/isa/ad1848/ad1848.c:80: specify port
kernel: AD1848 soundcard not found or device busy

 Should I try another driver?

[Alsa-user] ICE1724 + mixer?

2003-06-04 Thread bram . verweij
Dear all,

First of all thanks to the ALSA team for their excellent work - I've been using
the ens1371 driver for a couple of years without any problems. I recently bought
a Revolution 7.1 after I noticed it was supported by ALSA, and with help of
comments on this list I've managed to get it to work with mplayer and xmms,
both native and OSS emulation.

The only thing I can't seem to figure out is how to control the volume except
when using alsa-mixer directly. Controlling the playback volume through mplayer
or xmms seems to be not possible, not with native drivers, nor with OSS
emulation. This has been the case with all versions of alsa since support was
added for the M-Audio Revolution (i.e. since before 0.9.0). My /etc/asound.conf
is listed below.

So the question is: how do I explain to applications how to control the playback
volume - either through OSS emulation or through native drivers?

Thanks in advance,

Bram Verweij

for the hardware synth to work. There is some on the SBLive cd. These can
be loaded using sfxload out of the awesfx package.

Re: [Alsa-user] ICE1712 + Quickcam 4000 Pro USB. Mic not happening.

2003-06-04 Thread Simon Blandford
Hi Clemens,

I commented out all the pwc stuff and I still get the system freeze when
I add the line

alias sound-slot-1 snd-audio-usb

I have also tried commenting out the ICE1712 as well but it this also does not fix it.

Upon reboot modules.conf is corrupted (I've learned to keep a backup). I am using an XFS filing system.

Also if I find the version...

cat /proc/asound/version
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 0.9.0rc8.
Compiled on Mar 14 2003 for kernel 2.4.21-0.16mm-mdk with versioned symbols.
The mm in the kernel is the multi-media patched kernel for Mandrake (contrib). I guessed this may be a reason for the system freeze so I tried the standard kernel also. Same result, system freeze.

I see Alsa is up to 0.9.3 now. That is probably the next thing to try...

Thanks,
SimonB.

"audio" is the kernel's OSS driver. You really shouldn't load OSS and ALSA
drivers (such as snd-ice1712) at the same time.

I've tried changing the USB mic settings to...
alias sound-slot-1 snd-audio
alias sound-service-1-0 snd-audio

ALSA's USB driver is names snd-usb-audio ...

...and I've also tried snd-usb-audio too, only that results in a
complete system freeze when Alsa starts. Nasty.

snd-usb-audio should work. Probably you have an old ALSA version (see
/proc/asound/version), but I guess there's a conflict when snd-usb-audio
and the proprietary driver both try to access the device at the same time.
Please try loading snd-usb-audio without the pwc/pwcx modules.

[Alsa-user] Does version skew cause problems between "base" and "modules", xine, xmms?

2003-06-04 Thread Moshe Yudkowsky
The current Debian for alsa-base is 0.9.3c, and that's what I have
loaded, but the current alsa-modules for my system is at 0.9.3a+1. I
realize I ought to update the modules, but I wonder if this is really my
problem.

After going to 0.9.3c for alsa-base, I suddenly discovered that several
programs stoped working properly. In particular, "xine," which used to
work well with ALSA, gives a slew of error codes:

> libmad: ALERT input buffer too small (2279 bytes, 0 avail)!

prints out continuously, while

> xine: pcm.c:889: snd_pcm_delay: Assertion `pcm' failed.

prints out when I close the xine window. I had other problems with xmms,
which at first wouldn't work at all; I tweaked the settings a few times
and it seemed to settle down. Finally, "arecord" no longer works unless
I specifically tell it to use hw:0,1 -- and I'm pretty certain I didn't
need to do that before. If I use the default, I get *silent* failure --
no recording, not even a blank file. Not to mention that I can't set
hw:0,1 to record at anything like the 41000 it should be able to provide.

Comments? I find this baffling.

Hi all,

Thanks for all the replies! I didn't realize I needed to
be looking for the VIA8235 driver, but now it looks like

As for ALC vs ALS, that was probably a case of seeing what
I expected to see instead of what was there.

otherwise it's a safe bet that it worked. ;-)

Objet: [Alsa-user] ALS650?

I once had a system working quite nicely with an
ALS120-based soundcard and ALSA, so I figured I'd be okay
with a motherboard I bought which had an integrated ALS650
chipset. However, I find that this series of chips is now
owned by RealTek instead of Avance Logic, and they have an
NDA policy posted in their FAQ.

So. I could vent about idiotic proprietary manufacturers,
but there's really no point, is there? ;-)

The real point is...

Would I be wasting my time trying to get ALSA to run with
this board (implying that I need to just get a real sound
card), or is it likely that one of the earlier drivers
would still work on it? I'm not particularly concerned
about the "5.1" sound -- I'd be happy with stereo out, and
mic/line-in working.

I'd be particularly interested to hear from anyone who's
tried it.

TIA,
