It works, but you must use alsamixer or some other native ALSA mixer
to setup the mixer correctly (there is input source).

I've been using alsamixer, as well as other mixers (both alsa and
oss), but I've found no combination of settings that works for
the LINE-INs. The controls I see are:

# amixer scontrols ###
Simple mixer control 'PCM',0
Simple mixer control 'PCM Capture Source',0
Simple mixer control 'PCM',1
Simple mixer control 'Mic',0
Simple mixer control 'Auto Gain Control',0
Simple mixer control 'Speaker',0
Simple mixer control 'Speaker',1
##

I've tried every reasonable combination, but I still capture
nothing from those inputs. I've tried 'PCM Capture Source' in
each of the three settings ('Mic', 'Input 1' and 'Input 2'). I've
enabled capture for PCM and PCM 1. I've tried every combination
of CAPTUR settings and I've unmuted everything.

If someone would be kind enough to post an 'asound.state' file
that is known to enable LINE-IN input, I could at least rule out
that as being the problem.

thanks,
steve

[Alsa-user] ice1712 / envy24 problems - please help!

2004-03-24 Thread Brian Huffman
I have an MAudio Deltio DiO 2496 sound card that I'm trying to use for simple
playback and I can't seem to get to the end of my problems. OSS emulation
playback has pops / clicks. And I'm unable to get native ALSA to work in some
programs.

Is there any way to turn debugging on in the drivers? Whenever the software
tries to initialize the sound card w/ the snd_pcm_hw_params the error Invalid
argument Is returnedI have to admit that's very difficult to troubleshoot.
I'd like to be able to see which parameter is failing so that I can either make
changes to the software or perhaps create some .asoundrc that will fix the
problem.

Thanks
Brian

[Alsa-user] ALSA Plugin for XMMS

2004-03-24 Thread Darrell Blake
I'm having trouble getting ALSA to work with XMMS and am hoping someone
can shed some light on it for me. This is my .asoundrc file...

pcm.48000Hz {
   type plug
   slave {
   pcm hw:0,0
   rate 48000
   }
   route_policy default
}
That's it. There's nothing else in there. When I run XMMS and try and
play an mp3 I get the usual Please check that... because it doesn't
think I have my sound card set up properly. I've tried configuring the
plugin both by setting the audio device to USB Audio (I have an Audigy2
NX) and by setting user defined to 48000Hz but I'm still getting the
same problem.

It might be worth noting that if I play a file using aplay like aplay
-D 48000Hz file.wav it works.

Any ideas?

Darrell

[Alsa-user] You can all ignore the one I sent before about not being able to get the ALSA plugin for XMMS working. I've got it working but now I have another problem. I noticed that in the alsamixer there were two things showing up. PCM and Speaker. So all I did was change the mixer device to Speaker in Xmms. Why optical ??? Maybe because Optical and coaxial spdif output is 1

Hum. If its used for ac3 passthrough this makes sense. However I need to
enable it to get plain old pcm out of the port, not just AC3.

3)IEC958 Coaxial - this is for optical and coaxial input.

Ah.. maybe we should rename the control to reflect this? it would save
alot of confusion.

Maybe you didn't notice that udev doesn't load modules on device node access
(to solve problems caused by programs which touch many device files to detect
available hardware and so load many modules under devfs).

I assume you read the udev FAQ?
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/kernel/hotplug/udev-FAQ
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/kernel/hotplug/udev_vs_devfs

 Kernel is 2.6.4 and
udev is version 022. The snd-mixer-oss and snd-seq-oss are not being
loaded at boot nor are /dev/sound/* and links /dev/dsp, dev/mixer, etc
 being created.
AFAIK, ALSA devices currently aren't handled by udev (maybe some of the devs
can enlighten me), but ideally they would be created when the module gets
loaded and generates a hotplug event.

1) Have you loaded the mentioned modules?
2) Try to create the device files manually.

Gabriel.

BTW, I'm using kernel 2.6.3. Maybe 2.6.4 knows more about my hardware?

Re: [Alsa-user] oss not loading with alsa and udev

2004-03-24 Thread digger vermont
Hi Gabriel,
Thanks for answering. Yep I did read it all kinds of links about
udev. But that doesn't mean I understood all of it :)

In any case, I remembered /etc/default/alsa (debian system) with,

# Set as true if you want the OSS compatibility layer
# to be automatically loaded as well.
startosslayer=true

It had been set to false. But in the past that had never stopped the
modules from being loaded.

   Gabriel.

Ok, my fault. For some reason when I did dpkg-reconfigure alsa-base I
could select atiixp but it failed. Turns out I didn't have the module.
Doh.

So I compiled a new kernel and got the newest alsa-drivers and it works
fine now.

I do get a few errors when I start alsa:

ALSA /usr/src/modules/alsa-driver/pci/atiixp.c:453: atiixp: codec read

Don't know what to do about that, but at least I got Alsa working.

Thanks.

You have redefined the default device in your ~/.asoundrc to be a

It seems that the IEC958 pcm would be device 2, but ALSA tries to play

Try to change the line device 1 to device 2 in the definition of

[Alsa-user] Intel 8x0 and Midi

2004-03-24 Thread Matt Middleton

I posted earlier about problems with midi and the
intel 8x0. I thought the midi device listed was a
sequencer, but I guess thats not the case. Is the mpu
uart device just for a hardware midi interface? In
any case I tried using timidity, but its playback for
midis is really strange. I wouldn't characterize the
sound as slow or delayed, really, but it sounds like
the timing of the notes is really off. I'm running on
a 2.4 ghz processor with 768 mb ram so it shouldn't be
a problem processing I wouldn't think, but I don't
know. I'm also running kernel 2.6.4.

Thanks,

Matt

Yes. ALSA programs like pmidi already use these
 ports.

I guess your games want an OSS-compatible port like
 /dev/midi. Such
device files require a device driver, so load
 snd-virmidi in addition
to your snd-intel8x0 driver, and connect it to a
 Timidity port (e.g.
aconnect 72:0 128:0), then instruct your program
 to use /dev/midi01.
