Please, help me! I don`t know what to do?

2001-05-05 Thread Leandro Sales

Hello folks... I need some help. I`m configuring Amanda on a server running
linux kernel 2.2.17. I have a SCSI device and tapetype DDS-3 Sony. When I
check the configuration with amcheck I got the following:

Amanda Tape Server Host Check

NOTE: skipping tape-writeble test.
Tape completo label ok.
Server check took 5.317 seconds.

Amanda Backup Client Hosts Check
-
WARNING: selfcheck request timed out. Host down? -> Why this problem
occur?
Client check: 1 host checked in 30.041 seconds, 1 problem found.

Please, I have been trying to configure this software for about two weeks,
but until now, I didn`t get success. I really need to fix this problem.

PS: I was reading the FAQ that cover this problem in amanda.org but I didn`t
get success.

When I install AMANDA, in the inet.conf I put the following lines:
amanda dgram udp tcp wait amanda /usr/lib/amanda/amandad amandad
amandaidx stream tcp nowait amanda /usr/lib/amanda/amindexd amindexd
amidxtape stream tcp nowait amanda /usr/lib/amanda/amidxtaped amidxtaped

I have the following rpm packeges:
amanda-client-2.4.1p1-7cl
amanda-2.4.1p1-7cl
amanda-server-2.4.1p1-7cl
linuxconf-amandaconf-1.21r8-7cl

I have other question:
Why this occur?
[root@monet /root]# amcheck /etc/amanda/amanda.conf
amcheck: could not cd to confdir /etc/amanda//etc/amanda/amanda.conf: File
or directory not found

I have to do:
[root@monet /root]# amcheck ../../etc/amanda/amanda.conf
with ../../ this eliminate the first /etc/amanda and the program (amcheck)
interprets the correct directory

Ok... I'm waiting some anwsers.

Thanks...

Leandro.

Is the actual (eg, tar) command used by amdump recorded? Where?

Yes, patch applied.

Yup. Those are the evil ones.

Good. You might as well throw away all those files that look like above.
They are worthless and will just confuse things.

That also means you'll need to get another dump cycle started (a level 0)
before you have good index data. You can use "amadmin force"
to get that going early, if you need to.

And did you do it the same way Amanda does, i.e. with all the listed
incremental type flags it hands to GNU tar? That's where a lot of the
problems are, not in just basic tar operations.

>I downgraded my (gnu) tar to v1.12 last week because

As I understand it (I don't use GNU tar), the latest (.17 or .19)
versions are probably OK. We should probably update the web page.

But going back to 1.12 plus the Amanda patch (you did apply them, didn't
you?) is also OK.

>Also, is it safe to directly tar to an amanda-written tape w/o amanda or

What do you mean?

Amanda deliberately leaves the tape positioned at the end when it is done,
i.e. it does not do a rewind. This is in case you want to append some
more data in the same run, which should be reasonably safe (although
I'd certainly do a couple of experiments before I committed to this).

I don't know what amrestore will have to say about that if it bangs into
your file(s). But by that time, it will have gone past all the Amanda
data anyway and so you could ignore whatever whining it does.

In my (very public :-) opinion, you should **NOT** rewind or reload an
Amanda tape, fsf to the "end" and then write some information, unless
you really, really know what you're doing and can verify at least 10
different ways that you're actually at the end of tape.

John, here is a sample of the right index files, with the big
numbers you were talking about, I guess:

07274015541/./
07274015536/./_amanda/
07274015536/./_amanda/amanda-2.4.2/
07274015536/./_amanda/amanda-2.4.2/amplot/
07274015536/./_amanda/amanda-2.4.2/changer-src/

setting up gnutar 1.13.19 on both my server & clients seems to
have solved the problem, that is, amrecover not showing all the
backed up files.

Pierre.

But I just archived that dir to disk using tar and it got all the files
fine.

I downgraded my (gnu) tar to v1.12 last week because
http://www.amanda.org/patches.html says "there are a couple of other
problems in release 1.13 ... so its use is not recommended."

According to the email summary, L is 0.

Also, is it safe to directly tar to an amanda-written tape w/o amanda or
might that mess up later attempts to amrestore from that tape?
