Solaris 8 compile problem with amanda 2.4.4
*This message was transferred with a trial version of CommuniGate(tm) Pro* Hi all, Having trouble with a solaris 8 compile of amanda 2.4.4 on sparc hardware. I've compile amanda successfully before on the same platform, but cannot work out what I'm doing wrong. The problem manifests when I run amcheck: ld.so.1: /usr/local/sbin/amcheck: fatal: libgcc_s.so.1: open failed: No such file or directory The only thing I know is different is that I have compiled readline rather than use the version from sunfreeware.com as I have in the past. When I have installed the package version from sunfreeware I have always seen errors about readline support no matter what I set LD_LIBRARY_PATH to or --with-includes, etc. So I thought I try to get this working. I don't know if this is the source of the error as I didn't think amcheck used readline. Using: ./configure --with-user=amanda --with-group=backup \ --with-includes=/usr/local/include \ --with-libraries=/usr/local/lib \ --with-gnutar=/usr/local/bin/tar \ gcc 3.2.2 gmake 3.8 LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib:/usr/local/lib Looking through config.log for error or fatal strings I can see: conftest.c:2: parse error before "me" configure:4041: $? = 1 configure: failed program was: #ifndef __cplusplus choke me #endif In file included from configure:12882: /usr/include/netinet/ip.h:61: field `ip_src' has incomplete type /usr/include/netinet/ip.h:61: field `ip_dst' has incomplete type /usr/include/netinet/ip.h:62: confused by earlier errors, bailing out ld: fatal: library -lfl: not found ld: fatal: File processing errors. No output written to conftest ld: fatal: library -lsun: not found ld: fatal: File processing errors. No output written to conftest collect2: ld returned 1 exit status However, the make; make install completes. Any pointer appreciated, I have tried a lot of variants of --with-libraries and LD_LIBRARY_PATH, tried with and without a portrange specified for backup through a firewall, but I still get the same error. Re: Solaris 8 compile problem with amanda 2.4.4
Jim where's libgcc_s.so.1 ??? in /usr/local/lib ? if it is then you'll have to include that in the LD_LIBRARY_PATH. This a a runtime path (like $PATH, $MANPATH etc) that is used by Solaris to search for libs during execution. -- Martin Hepworth Senior Systems Administrator Solid State Logic Ltd +44 (0)1865 842300 Jim Mozley wrote: ld.so.1: /usr/local/sbin/amcheck: fatal: libgcc_s.so.1: open failed: No such file or directory ** This email and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. Amanda and smbclient not working
Hi, I have been trying to get amanda to backup some of our windows servers, without much luck. Here is what the configuration looks like: /etc/amandapass file: //server/share administrator%password disklist entry: server //server/share central The dump program is set to GNUTAR. When I run amcheck it reports that the host is down. I used strace to see what amcheck is doing, and it seems that amcheck thinks the server is a unix/linux amanda client (it is sending data to port 10080 (amanda client's udp port). I am using amanda 2.4.4 and samba 2.2.8a on Redhat linux 7.3. If you have any ideas please let me know. thanks, -- Mark Le Noury Barone, Budge & Dominick Tel. The line below, quoted from one of your earlier messages, should make the setting of LD_LIBRARY_PATH superfluous. >> CFLAGS="-L/usr/local/lib -L/usr/lib" LDFLAGS="-R/usr/local/lib" Both are ld(1) options and could be listed as LDFLAGS though it would not affect much as gcc passes any -L options on to ld. I would hope the inclusion of /usr/lib is unneeded. Any compiler/linker worth its salt on unix would be looking there as a default. Does Sol 8 on sparc include the crle command? Running this should tell you (and let you modify) what lib directories are looked at at runtime without a need to set LD_LIBRARY_PATH. I don't think it affects the compile/link, just the runtime dynamic linker. Here is a sample output: $ crle Configuration file [3]: /var/ld/ld.config Default Library Path (ELF): /usr/lib:/usr/sfw/lib:/opt/sfw/lib:/usr/local/lib Trusted Directories (ELF):/usr/lib/secure (system default) Command line: crle -c /var/ld/ld.config -l /usr/lib:/usr/sfw/lib:/opt/sfw/lib:/usr/local/lib That is modified from the default by the inclusion of /usr/local/lib and probably the "sfw/lib" dirs. The -R option is the used to specify lib dirs specific to an executable (like X window system libs for X programs). The -R puts the lib dir location into the executable. These techniques are generally considered more secure than using LD_LIBRARY_PATH and some nasty person could point to a libdir with "trojan horse functions" like a funky printf, or amanda's get_disklist_entry function :). Two obscure possible ideas. 1. try "file /usr/local/lib/libgcc_s*". Are they Sparc modules? Every once in a while I put a Sparc module on my x86 systems. Know what, they don't work :) 2. you have installed and uninstalled several times. adding snapshot backups?
currently, i have a backup schedule that uses ten tapes over ten days. however, i think this just provides one recent copy of a given file. periodically, i'd like to create snapshots (full backups) in case someone has a corrupt file that went unnoticed since the last backup. what's the best way to do this? can i change my current config somehow, or should i create an additional config that runs the full backups? thanks
Re: adding snapshot backups?
Lloyd, (Assuming dump utility), Amanda will schedule a level 0 every (at most) dump cycle if not more frequently. When the dump level is advances, to say level 1, if the user file is modified it will appear on each level 1 until dump level becomes 2. If the file is again modified it will appear on each level 2... You have a tape cycle of 10, what is your dump cycle ? Certain less than 10, hopefully less than 5. 5 given one untouched copy of the your level 0 backup while the older level 0 is being overwritten (assuming a single level 0 per dump cycle). What are you trying to do ? Are you talking about mid-day snapshots ? Are you looking for periodic level 0 that are outside of the normal tape pool or rotation ? > currently, i have a backup schedule that uses ten tapes over ten days. > however, i think this just provides one recent copy of a given file. > > periodically, i'd like to create snapshots (full backups) in case > someone has a corrupt file that went unnoticed since the last backup. > > what's the best way to do this? can i change my current config somehow, > or should i create an additional config that runs the full backups? > > thanks

This has a minimal effect on amanda and its daily operations. I'm running a dumpcycle and runspercycle of 7 days here, against a pool of 28 tapes, DDS2's being dirt cheap. -- Cheers, Gene AMD [EMAIL PROTECTED] 320M [EMAIL PROTECTED] 512M 99.26% setiathome rank, not too shabby for a WV hillbilly Yahoo.com attornies please note, additions to this message by Gene Heskett are: Copyright 2003 by Maurice Eugene Heskett, all rights reserved.

Clone your daily config but use 'dumpcycle 0' to force full dumps on everything, 'record no' so as not to clobber the dumpdates on your daily runs, and a different log/index directory and tape labels than your normal run. RE: adding snapshot backups?
It sounds to me like what you want to do is make a new amanda configuration which you run once a week and have it take full backups only. You would then need enough tapes to do say 12 full backups. That way you would have data from about 3 months ago if you needed it. Then, each week, in addition to your daily backups, you will do one extra backup which is your full backup of everything. It might be easier to get another 20 tapes and add them to your existing rotation. That way you will have the 10 tapes you are using plus two full cycles of backup history. Then you just go through all 30 tapes before starting over. > -Original Message- > From: lloyd [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Sent: Monday, June 23, 2003 2:11 PM > To: > Subject: Re: adding snapshot backups? > > > Brian Cuttler wrote: > > You have a tape cycle of 10, what is your dump cycle ? > Certain less than > > 10, hopefully less than 5. 5 given one untouched copy of > the your level > > 0 backup while the older level 0 is being overwritten > (assuming a single > > level 0 per dump cycle). > > the dump cycle, runs per cycle, and tape cycle are 10. > > > > What are you trying to do ? > > just ensure there is some kind of snapshot history going > back, say three > months, in case i need to reach into the distant past for a > file. maybe > a once-weekly snapshot... > > > > Are you looking for periodic level 0 that are outside of the > > normal tape pool or rotation ? > > i think this is what i'm after. perhaps combine this with your > suggestion to lower the dump cycle to < 5 ? can i just change this > value in amanda.conf? > > >
Re: adding snapshot backups?
Lloyd, Highly recommended that you have at least 2x times the number of runs as dump cycle, else you run the risk of overwriting the only level 0 of any particular partition. Can you run dumpcycle of 5 rather than 10 ? Depends on the amount of data you are dumping and the capacity of your tapes. Probably yes but I don't know the particulars. There has been a lot of discussion (archives are online) and what I believe is often done (and I do _not_ do this myself) is to have a separate amanda run or runs that perform level 0 on all partitions and to a separate tape pool. The are a couple of strategies to do this, somewhat depending on your tape pool/capacity etc. > Brian Cuttler wrote: > > You have a tape cycle of 10, what is your dump cycle ? how does Amanda decide which tape to use?
Hi all, I've got my tape drive stuff sorted out (thanks for all your help) and now I'm looking at setting up my tape rotation schedule. I need to be sure I get it right since it will be handed off to operators that won't be doing any debugging if something goes wrong. So, here is my plan. I will have a dump cycle of 7 days, runs per cycle of 7 (1 per day), tapes per run of 1, I have 15 tapes, and I would like to have 2 full backups before reusing a tape. If I label the tapes as TAPE001 through TAPE015 and do so in that order, I believe the first tape Amanda will want to use is TAPE001 (or does it even matter?). Now, assuming that I had the tape changing off to the operators on Monday (June 30), can I give them a document like this to follow? DATETAPE-TO-REMOVE TAPE-TO-INSERT June 30 noneTAPE001 July 1 TAPE001 TAPE002 July 2 TAPE002 TAPE003 July 15 TAPE015 TAPE001 July 16 TAPE001 TAPE002 Any other hints? amrestore question
I've just finished setting up amanda here, and am making sure I know how to do full-volume restores with amrestore before "disaster" strikes and I _NEED_ to know. That said, I'm running into a problem: I have a level 0 dump of a filesystem from one server, and am trying to restore it to a different server (same model and drive config/partitions as the original) I am using amanda 2.4.4 with gnutar (and a SDLT160, if that matters) on Solaris8. When I run: # rsh -n dcsunbackup.ncb.com /usr/local/sbin/amrestore -p /dev/rmt/0cn dclawson.ncb.com '\^/sybase\$' | tar t from the client, all of the files returned are listed under numerical directories, for example: 07674121412/./locales/us_english/mac/ctdrvlib.loc 07674121412/./locales/us_english/mac/ctlib.loc 07674121412/./locales/us_english/mac/dblib.loc 07674121412/./locales/us_english/mac/defncopy.loc 07674121412/./locales/us_english/mac/isql.loc 07674121412/./locales/us_english/mac/libdna.loc 07674121413/./locales/us_english/mac/libinsck.loc 07674121413/./locales/us_english/mac/libsdna.loc 07674121413/./locales/us_english/mac/libsri.loc 07674121413/./locales/us_english/mac/libtli.loc The disklist entry for this filesystem is as follows: dclawson.ncb.com/sybase user-tar And the dumptype is straight from the amanda defaults: define dumptype root-tar { global program "GNUTAR" comment "root partitions dumped with tar" compress none index exclude list "/usr/local/lib/amanda/exclude.gtar" priority low } define dumptype user-tar { root-tar comment "user partitions dumped with tar" priority medium } The exclude file is currently empty. So, where are all these directories coming from, and more importantly, how can I make them go away? Thanks for your help, Jon Sippel

What does 'gtar --version' show (substitute whatever path to gnutar you compiled into Amanda)? If that is the case, update your tar and force a full backup as soon as possible. If you need to restore a file before that happens, all your files are there, just mapped into meaningless numeric directory names. I think someone on the list had a script to help with the process, but I assume there is still a lot of manual labor involved. No, AFAIK that one is innocent, but the bare 1.13 sure is guilty. In any event, he should get tar-1.13-25.tar.gz from alpha.gnu.org. >What does 'gtar --version' show (substitute whatever path >to gnutar you compiled into Amanda)? > >If that is the case, update your tar and force a full >backup as soon as possible.
