amanda, fresh startup, wrong printer for report

2013-06-21 Thread Gene Heskett
Greetings;

A fresh startup for amanda, after nearly a years hiatus, but when I ran a
test backup a few hours ago, and the final report came out on a MFP that I
keep around for its scanner, but has had dried up and plugged up nozzles in
the printhead for near a year. So obviously I got a blank sheet of paper.

Where does amanda keep its printer selection where there are 2 or more
available so I can fix this by sending it to a B&W laser, the systems
default printer?

Thanks.

Cheers, Gene

I would like to add a hearty "me too" to this problem. In
amanda.conf I have:

printer "SteveLaser"

yet mysteriously my output is going to the device ColorLaser. This
has happened to me in the past and I just wait for awhile and it
starts going to SteveLaser again. Recently I moved amanda to a new
machine and now it's going to ColorLaser again. I'm waiting
patiently but if anyone knows of a fix, or if I can help debug
this, bring it on.

I'll second that too Steve. I changed the system default printer to the
HL2140 yesterday, but I had a blank sheet of paper on the NX515's output
shelf this morning.

No email either, but that could have been a perms problem, so I just
touched /var/spool/mail/amanda, as root, the chowned it to amanda:disk
which is the amanda user/group on this machine.

My mailwatcher script will catch that and tell kmail to go get that, if
that was the missing mail problem. The filter to the amanda folder has
been setup in kmail for several years.

The 2 client machines were backed up last night ok too, seems the exclude
file MUST live in the same named directory on the clients as on the server,
so a wee bit of copy/paste & so on fixed that.

I have grepped the whole /etc tree without finding a clue, I put a printer
statement in the tapetype section of amanda.conf as suggested but that gave
amcheck a strangulated hernia, so now I have put it immediately under the
dumpuser line, and have made sure amanda is in suitable lines of the
/etc/group file.

There HAS to be an answer to this someplace. amgetconf has no concept of
either listing everything, or recognizing printer as a keyword. Its
turning into about a 10-33 tor vacuum, eg really really sucks.

So, thinking it might be compiled in somehow, I just tried to build &

So, I'll go back to 4761 and see if that will rebuild & install:
Yes and no, an extra - in the amcheck invocation crept into my "newmanda"
script. Then I thought I'd go back and 'bisect' it, but note two alarming
things: 1) I can't download the older versions and 2) the last new version
is dated late March. Has the Community builds site been moved or ???

So what is going on with amanda? A 1.5 decade long user is asking.

I am not interested in tape labels Jean-Louis, but in the destination
printer that amreport uses to print that "magic software" report on.

I have the printer specified this way, as the next line under dumpuser in
my amanda.conf:
mailto "g...@coyote.coyote.den"
dumpuser "amanda" # the user to run dumps under
printer "HL3170CDW"

I am not getting the emails.

No place that I can find specifies the Epson printer, whose nozzles are
totally plugged, and which has now been turned off for 3 days, but amanda
is persistent in sending these reports to that printer, an Epson NX515.

The proper printer even is returned by:
root@coyote:/home/amanda # amgetconf Daily printer
HL3170CDW

But nothing I have done, including rebooting and reverifying that the
default is still the HL2140, a B&W laser, is still set as default.

I set the HL3170CDW in amanda.conf just so I wouldn't have to run to the
basement and clear out the table I have been assembling rockhoppers 6 page
poster diagrams of the logic flows configured in the Hardware Abstraction
Layer of LinuxCNC, describing my CNC'd lathes configuration.

The question is, how do I configure amanda to use the proper printer for
its amreport output? Every method so far has been an abject, dismal
failure.

FWIW, I tried to build the latest svn pull from the community downloads web
site, (which seems to have been abandoned as the last tar ball has a March
2013 creation date, and it will not build on a ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS (Lucid)
system due to some python lib dependency that is not available to me via
the normal repositories for Lucid LTS. My .newmanda script is running now
to recover the error. I note also that one of the patches I have been
using also fails, so I'll report that here also.

The patch failure is to planner.c that you sent me at least a year ago:

What is the values of LPRFLAG in /Amanda/Constants.pm

Set it to "-P" if you are using lpr and set it to "-d" if you are using

   $LPRFLAG = "-P";

A change to $LPRFLAG can't be tested until the weekend, I use

I take it back Jean-Louis. I'm in the process of losing the drives I had
in this machine, bad cables and or thousands of re-allocated sectors. They
are all within weeks of the same age & brand, so they are all falling over
in unison. :(

The /amandatapes dropped off the bus last night and I didn't notice it, but
when I ran am amflush session after the drive was mounted again, I did get
the backup report on the "default" printer, so the -P did indeed fix that.

Now if I could get it to send me the email its been setup to do since about
1998 or 1999, that would be nice too.

So there are 3 more 1Tb drives sitting here in boxes, waiting for a $70
drive cage from tigerdirect that has a nice big fan in the rear, and mounts
3 ea 3.5" drives in the vertical space that 2 5.25" drives would take, and
they are hot swappable to boot. Very neat little piece of kit. + 8Gb of
new ram to replace the 4 thats in this box because its into swap an hour
after a reboot. That 8Gb is this motherboards limit. The whole machine is
due for its annual D&C anyway, so I'll roll it out on the front deck & take
the air hose & make it look new while I'm replacing all this stuff.

What is in the 'invoking printer' line in the amreport debug file?
Do you checked that LPRFLAG is set to "-P" in the installed Constants.pm
file, A recompilation can reinstall the broken one.

Amanda append the PRINTER setting.

Reinstall in progress. But how do I make this part of my .configure

Ok, reset and reinstalled, but not reconfigured first.

How about my other question? Where have the alpha's been moved to?

Set it to "-P" if you are using lpr and set it to "-d" if you are

  $LPRFLAG = "-P";

An amreport.debug file doesn't appear to have been generated. See my next
post however, a drive problem didn't allow the dumnp to complete, but when
I remounted the drive and ran amflush, I did get the report, and got it on
the amanda.conf selected printer. Then last night, it worked to the
selected printer again.

But now, no emails since this restart 7 runs ago now. What mechanism is
used for that?

ISTR sendmail was updated by ubuntu a few months ago, but didn't effect any
other mail traffic that I've noticed. In fact, according to the package
manager, synaptic, sendmail is not now installed. postfix however, is
installed. Do I need to spec that in the amanda.conf too? If so, how?

Thanks.

Does Mail keep its own log?

HI,

I committed the attached patch.

Thank you, added to my build script and a full clean install of
4.-svn-4761 is underway.

And I did find the amreport.debug file, which is pasted here, last
nights version:

The perl line context from that human.pm file is:
  my $nb_incr_dle = 0;
  my @incr_dle = @{$self->{tapedisks}};
  foreach my $level (1 .. $#incr_dle) {

$nb_incr_dle += $incr_dle[$level];  <--line 797

  "DLEs Taped",
  $self->{tapedisks}[0] + $nb_incr_dle,

  (

  (has_incrementals($self->{tapedisks}))

  ? by_level_count($self->{tapedisks})

  : ""

  )

  );

I have zero perl experience. So I've no clue if that is stopping the
email or not.

Thanks.
