[AMRadio] Can't post to the reflector from work
Please forward this to the AMReflector for me as I am at work and can receive from the reflector but can't send. That's one of the reasons I use a Hotmail account for the reflector. I can access it from anywhere. There are other, similar free web-based e-mail services. One is Yahoo. A recent new one is Myway.com. My ISP now has a web-based server, but another reason I use Hotmail for the reflector is to keep the spambots from harvesting my real (and confidential) e-mail address. Don K4KYV _ Tired of spam? [AMRadio] New to AM and BC-610
Evening, Gents -- I am new to this list, hoping to reap some wisdom on amplitude modulation. I'm also new to the AM scene, having been around the gammit on SSB, DX chasing, etc., which I still enjoy, but now I'm branching out to include something else in my interests. I recently picked up a BC-610E transmitter and an accompanying speech amp. Guess this is a good place to begin. I've searched the web and have picked up some manuals and CD info, but cannot find much in the way of useful and helpful modifications. Being that this transmitter has been around for awhile and I'm betting that many of you fellows have dug into one at some point in time, I'd be interested in what some of you have to say about these units and how they could be modified for peak performance. [AMRadio] source of C connector
After having fun with my SP-600 and Viking ll I decided to buy another AM station. It consists of an Apache / Warrior and a 390A receiver. My question is, where do I acquire a "C" connector for the unbalanced antenna connection on the back of the 390A? Thanks, Steve Fitzgerald N4KQR Tampa FL

Good advice on checking shunts. Another quick check on the meter, that I use all of the time, is to series a 1500 ohm resistor with a 1.5 volt battery placing all in series with the meter to check for defection. With a little ohms law I can come up with the internal resistance and defection range of unknown meters. Re: [AMRadio] re: no meter reading on Valiant
If anyone needs a meter for a Viking 1 or 2, I have an extra including the shield that I will part with for 25 bucks plus shipping. The case is a bit discolored but the meter works. 73 Jim de W5JO > > "... Output seems good, full power, everything seems to work except the > meter. No meter movement on any setting. Re: [AMRadio] re: no meter reading on Valiant
Hi Ron, Nice rig! Congrats... Hopefully you haven't blown one of the multiplier resistors that's switched in parallel with your meter...I did that once with a Ranger-1 & destroyed the meter. Check the values of these resistors one by one---if any are open, i.e. infinite resistance, then the meter is cooked for sure (the meter itself is probably rated 5 ma. max). I ended-up doing a "transplant", i,e, took the innards out of one similarly- rated, surplus, off the shelf meter, & dropped it into the original Ranger meter case. Precision work that needs steady hands! But it paid off... Good luck... ~73~ Eddy VE3CUI - VE3XZ > Just picked up a Johnson Valiant. Just picked up a Johnson Valiant. Output seems good, full power, everything seems to work except the meter. No meter movement on any setting. Suggestions on how to check the meter or wiring would be appreciated. RE: [AMRadio] re: Ranger driving Thunderbolt
Why are all going crazy about reducing power of a single 6146? Leave it alone and install a 3db or 6 dB attenuator at the antenna output. Either 1/2 power or 1/4 power respectively. Case closed. The rig will be left in resellable condition, and when you want the original level back... just remove the attenuator. I do it with a double pole double throw coax relay (any relay will do)when the lower level is needed. This is alot less work and is foolproof. The tube in the final is not what sets the loading. It is the ratio of Xcp to Xcl in the pi-network that sets the loading. You could replace the 6146 with a 6AQ5 and it would only serve to melt down the 6AQ5, but before melt down the thing would be loaded the same. You can run 20 watt with a 4-1000 if the loading ratio is correct. If you need to drop the plate current (and RF output) simply add more capacitance across the output connector (in parallel with the loading capacitor). The plate meter in most of these small rigs measures cathode current. This means it includes screen current with the plate current. It is possible to reduce the plate current at resonates to very little (like 5-10 ma) but he meter will show maybe 25-30 ma. This is because as you reduce the plate loading the screen current will increase. This phenomenon will cause a slight increase in RF output as the plate tuning is moved off the dip (resonance). You can increase the value of the screen resistor to reduce this effect and make the cathode current meter read lower. If a separate power supply is used for the plate supply of the small rig then a small variac can be used to reduce plate and screen voltage at the same time this will allow the plate loading circuit and screen circuit to remain unchanged while reducing output by means of a lower supply voltage.
