[AMRadio] Four Prong Plug For A National Speaker Needed

2006-07-12 Thread AB3L1
A recently purchased speaker needs a plug replacement. Looked good in the
picture!

It is stamped H H EBY INC. It has two prongs larger than the other two.
>From a web site I have found it is listed as a National DCS-10 and is for
the 100/101X model receiver.

Thank you for the help,

For what it is worth and nothing personal intended:

Don't ever begrudge or be envious of those who will spend whatever for a
nice piece of Collins. Many elderly or seniors have the purchasing power
now that they are retired to buy whatever they wish. I wish them well in
their purchases remember, it is their money and not yours. Let them enjoy
the hobby anyway they wish.

Did you know that more grandparents buy childrens' clothing than do parents.

I recall in the 1980's, before they started to bring in such big bux,
there
must have been over a dozen KW-1's on the air regularly. There were
several
lists of all the known serial #'s. IIRC, more than half the ones ever
made

were still in existence and accounted for.

According to Bob's current list, all but about 33 of the original 152
are accounted for. I say 'about' because his list shows two #34s,
which doesn't seem likely. I figure the other #34 owner actually has
#39 (unaccounted for) and just has bad eyesight like me.

A far higher percent accounted for than the almighty SX-88, which was
made in much higher numbers (500+?). Certainly speaks well for gear
actually being used, quality/cost considered.

Then the owners began to see offers they couldn't refuse, and since then,
most have disappeared off the air and into trophy rooms. Quite a few
have

gone to collectors in Europe and Asia.

I know of the one in Belgium, one in Germany, and one that supposedly
went to Japan back in the late 80s/early 90s according to the
then-recently retired Collins worker I spoke with. He knew the seller,
said the rig was completely restored to the last screw, and some
collector in Japan paid over $40K for it, then had it airfreighted
over. The figure he gave me was $46K, can't remember if it included
the shipping.

The perceived value may have something to do with the survival rate,
although they weren't "collectible" back then. More of a substantial
investment in high quality gear for actual use. The true value in my
view is the enjoyment that comes from using this old stuff as
originally intended. To look at an old rig and know that it was once
someone's shiney new pride and joy, and that I have an opportunity to
enjoy it as they once did is great.

Come to think of it, I do need to get my house painted. (o:

Todd,

Does it need to be a good painting job?. ..thinking about my three kids as
slaves... they seem to have most of the inside walls covered by various colors
of paint! Also remember how far I can drag a radio is directly related on how
little I pay for it! Lets see for a "FREE" BC-610 and KW1 I'd think that I
could bring them all the way down to MA by hand. As I look at my globe it all
looks downhill! BTW I recently got a Superpro PS and hope to get your old

[AMRadio] selling rigs too quickly

2006-07-12 Thread John Lyles
I have a friend at work who, in 1992 or thereabouts, sold the Collins KW-1 that
he had, for a few grand. I didn't know the value of those things back then, and
he was trying to move into an apartment, and needed space. I still kick myself
(and tell him about it). He probably wishes he had checked around for what they
were worth.
Maybe a few grand was a good deal in 1992?

My present stance is to hold on to everything, until I am sure that I will
never need it, even years in the future. Some call this pack rat mentality. I
am about 10 years from retirement in the RF power profession. While I cannot
always justify or find the time to rebuild BA transmitter and receivers that I
am accumulating at present, who knows how I will feel when I don't have to
drive to work anymore. Nothing goes out to the trash or 'fest, unless it is
absolute mung or I have a replacement that does mo'/better. Unfortunately this
has gotten me into trouble with the XYL, so I am contracting to have a 2 car
garage built out in the field, with some extra space out back. The XYL bought
the car-needing-a-good-garage story.

[AMRadio] Looking For Any Magazines?

2006-07-12 Thread Merz Donald S
I have a pretty substantial pile of magazines here that I am starting to go
through. The largest group is Popular Electronics. But I also have the usual
suspects--73, Radio-TV News, CQ, QST and some lesser lights such as Electronics
World. They go back to the mid-fifties, but no earlier.

If you have a WANT LIST of magazines that you need to fill gaps in your
collection, I'd be happy to look at it to see if any of these issues are on
your list. So let me know.

Otherwise, I will eventually post them all here as I get them inventoried.
Prices will be between $1 and 25 cents an issue.

I heard someone on 3875 the other night that has one he was willing to
sell, but can't remember who he was. Bill, N4VMY would know. I don't
know where he was, but seems like he was up north (from here) 9 or 8
land. He said he had not turned it on in over 15 years...

Hi Dwight & Geoff,

I'm in Portland, Maine right now on business --- will be heading out
toward the Toronto, Ontario area for home in about an hour (9:30 AM
EDST)...

I brought my Radio Shack HTX-10 ten meter transceiver with me, &
I'll be

checking the band peridically during the course of my 12 hour drive.
Listen for me on the repeaters, & the 29.0-MHz calling frequency.
The band
was open just a little on the way down to Maine on Sunday, but it's
beenflat ever since...

If one of you fellows could post my presence on the AM Reflector, I'd
appreciate it! I can't access it to leave messages whenever I'm
away from
my home computer --- can read the messages only! If you could put
out the
ord re. my availability, it might just open up my potential to be
heardthat much more! Hi Hi.

Thanks, & my vy

~73!~Eddy VE3CUI - VE3XZ

Greetings!

I am QRV on 10 AM today from Lincoln, Nebraska.
Will be listening to 29.000

I was able to bring up the DFW repeater on 29.660,
so the band is open to Tejas, at least...

[AMRadio] Lightning Strikes at W1UJR

2006-07-12 Thread Todd, KA1KAQ

Last night when Bruce called me with his usual "Guess what?" I figured
he'd found another old piece of National gear at a yard sale or
antique shop. WRONG! Instead he told me he'd taken a lightning hit in
grand style, from a strong afternoon storm yesterday.

Fortunately the damage was restricted to lightweight SS crap like his
modem, telephones, and an ICOM amp. Tube gear all survived FB. Spoke
with Bruce on 3885 this morning just before work, and he sounded like
his normal(?) self.

If you have any doubt about the power of lightning, take a gander:

http://www.w1ujr.net/lighting_strike.htm

Having been there and eyeballed that tree, I can tell you that the
pics don't do its size justice. It's also a fair distance (30-40')
from the driveway, where debris landed.

Absolutely incredible...

[AMRadio] Johnson Desk KW

2006-07-12 Thread Freeberg, Scott (STP)
I have sort of gone nuts.. well ok, sort of gone nuts again..
A year and a half ago I sold my Johnson Desk KW in part of a big heavy
radio sell off. Sold quite a bit of stuff at that time.
Could never bring myself to sell the pristine Johnson
Ranger 2 and Johnson Speech Amplifier option though. Now I'm thinking
that I sold the Desk KW too soon, and I'd like to still enjoy using
one on CW and AM.

I'm putting my feelers out. Any Johnson Desk KW's in the
Minnesota/Wisconsin/Michigan area.

Thanks. 73, Scott WA9WFA in Saint Paul Minn

I recall in the 1980's, before they started to bring in such big bux, there
must have been over a dozen KW-1's on the air regularly. There were several
lists of all the known serial #'s. IIRC, more than half the ones ever made
were still in existence and accounted for.

Quite a few have
gone to collectors in Europe and Asia.

I remember hearing a straping signal one night and when the usually "what
you got?" question came up the guy with the straping (as well as the best
signal from my QTH) mentioned that his rig was homebuilt there was a pregnant
pause of either amazement, wonder or disbelief. When you consider the amount
of
modifications on some rigs especially heathkits there is a quite a bit of
homebuilt out there. 73 to all Steve ve2swc

Quite frankly, your message is a screed.

Don't like the QSO? Swish the vfo.

Before you go, though.. would you please define "screed"?

Never mind. I'll look it up m'self.

Ah, here we go...

Webster defines it as:

_
screed One entry found for *screed*.
Main Entry: *screed*
Pronunciation: 'skrEd
Function: /noun/
Etymology: Middle English /screde/ fragment, alteration of Old
English /scrEade/ -- more at SHRED

*1 a* *:* a lengthy discourse *b* *:* an informal piece of writing
(as a personal letter)
*2* *:* a strip (as of a plaster of the thickness planned for the
coat) laid on as a guide

*3* *:* a leveling device drawn over freshly poured concrete
_

So, my message, you're saying, is a lengthy discourse, or an informal
peice of writing? I suppose that's true.

Let's not forget, we're -amatuers-. We are -not- professionals. I'm
sorry you don't think my message meets your standards, but Brian is
the person who would make -that- decision, and since it was he and I
in an exchange and he didn't say anything about it, I'd say he didn't
have a problem with it.

That -you- have a problem with it doesn't mean my message was
correct, either. If I offended you in some manner, then don't read
my messages in the future.

Unless Brian says he's got a problem with what and how I write, I'll
continue in the same manner as I have now, lo these many years.

Thanks for playing. Youv'e been a wonderful contestant.

You might want to read the message again, David, or are you really

Don't like it? Don't read it.

I know one prior owner in the Milwaukee area who traded his KW-1 for a
house-painting job. I asked him why and he said "I needed the house
painted" ;-) This was back in the 70s when all he figured if it was just
useful for CW or as a linear, he could do that with a much smaller rig.

Yeah, he's still kicking himself!

Well, I dunno. Even at today's KW-1 prices, that might not be such a bad
deal. Have you seen any estimates on house painting lately? Even a
moderately sized house with wood siding may run into 5 digits these days
for a good professionally done job.
