never, never use peanuts on radio packaging!.
newspaper and bubble wrap. foam is good too.
when a box is dammaged the peanuts fall out and there
goes your padding. the rest is down hill from there.
and newspaper absorbs water so I use that often.

[AMRadio] More G-50

2006-08-15 Thread Rick Brashear
I just got this little transceiver today (of course, it was in excellent
shape, so said the description) and UPS did a number on it. So, I am
now in need of a meter (it works but the inner case is busted) a
"Transmit/Receive" knob or metal insert for the knob and a meter switch
knob, it was totally smashed. Man, these guys at UPS must have played
soccer with this thing. It was double boxed and had lots of peanuts
between the boxes plus bubble wrap and they still managed to bust it
up! They are really good at what they do! ;-)

Oh, and all it does is BUZZ! Volume down... makes no difference.. so I
have yet another fix it project before I can play 6 meter AM on a real
tube radio.

Thanks for any help with the parts...

Is the BAMA site down or is my computer playing tricks on me...again?
My Netscape 7.1 went south, so I am using IE and I can't seem to bring
up any of the BAMA info. Is it me or them?

I am in need of a Gonset G-50 manual.

Thanks...
Rick/K5IZ

Rick,

You might have to play with IE settings to accomplish the downloads. I
was never sucessful myself with IE. Years ago I started using a FTP program,
and although pretty 'clunky' worked fine. I think it was 'cute_ftp'. Then a
few years ago I switched my browser to Mozilla Firefox. Firefox works
extremely well in many ways, and BAMA downloads are handled without any
fuss. It is interesting that IE beta version 7 is stolen technology from
Mozilla, and resembles Firefox in many ways. Bill Gates may have ethics
issues, but he is no dummy.

I own a G-50..Mine came via Ebay with a nice pair of Genalax KT-77
modulators instead of 6L6's. Those tubes that are NOS go for hundreds of
dollars for a matched pair. Nice surprise!

Regards,
Jim

ObAMradio: Got my Valiant working again - the caps I used in the output
network circuit had #24 gauge lead wires - instead of twisting the leads
and using three (there are three caps paralelled) like the Johnson
engineers did, I tied them together at the cases and ran only lead - and
it melted like a fuse. This went unnoticed, save that the rig tuning
went radically wonky - so instead of investigating I chalked it up to
summer / dry ground under my antenna - the ensuing strain then degraded
and eventually killed a $28 mica that I had in the tank circuit
D'OH!!

So yesterday I had a few blessed hours to myself, and I corrected these
faults, wired up a better PTT/Audio chain, the Rig now stable at full
output, the antenna system back to 1.2:1 on 80M, and I'll get back on the
air this evening, or tomorrow night  ;}

[AMRadio] Need B&W info.

2006-08-15 Thread charles free
Hello all,

Does anybody have a schematic for a piece of
communications gear mfd. by B&W for the govt? It is a
TRV-4 XCVR, covers the aviation band in AM mode. It
has a tunable RCVR, with a crystal controlled XMTR.
While it doesn't look like a Gonset, it was similar
vintage, and since Gonset also made an aviation band
only XCVR, this one was lumped in a class where
everybody called it a "Gonset". The contract number
for it was FA-1096, and was made in the 1950's. I
will gladly pay for a copy of the manual or schematic
and all shipping charges. BAMA, Hi-Manuals, W7FG,
and even Fair Radio have been no luck so far.

Thanks for any help, and email direct to me at

Thanks,

Charlie in NC.
