[AMRadio] 3870/QRM
Bow, You're probably in the best position to tell us whether you ever hear any AM activity during your SSB roundtable that you've taken part in. I'm certain that the postings being discussed here has everything to do with poor operators who happen to be in a particular region, and that the complaints/insults have little to do with the region itself. So Bow, how does the group handle a situation when the frequency is already in use when the SSB roundtable proceeds near that AM QSO? Please shed light on this for us. I am not quick to assume some ssb qso is intentionally interfering, as on their gear, they might not hear the AM, their filters being narrow and ours being very wide sometimes. Listening on 40 meters CW lately, I wonder why the slow code I can copy is always under a south American ssb qso, or right in with some real strong rtty station. I hear one side of the QSO real well, the other side barely or not at all, and assume the ssb or rtty is to low at the cw stations receive to matter. Why is it that very few of us are using the new expanded frequencies on 80 meters for AM? Before you respond with a statement that these frequencies are being utilized, then, why all the talk about 3870, etc.? A lot of us grumbled over the years that the F.C.C. was not listening to our petitions, but then when it - to our surprise, I might add - it allowed us to move down to 3600 Khz., the first night it was full of AM, then, the frequencies became conspicuously quiet, so to speak. Not sure where you've been Dave, but there has been a *LOT* of discussion on this point for the past few months from myself, Don, K4KYV and others. Many of us have been active down there and avoiding the garbage above, but as the novelty of the new spectrum wore off, a lot of folks drifted back to the old habit of hanging around in one sliver of the band and waiting for activity. The biggest problem in my view is that so many folks seem determined to wait for activity, not actually make it. As a result, they prefer hanging around the ghetto where they know they will find something, even if it's trash. I've operated back up there a few times since December, but prefer the area below 3800 most nights due to the noise/jamming/garbage between 3870-3885. In fairness to some, they have rockbound rigs, converted BC transmitters and such. I have one as well, but fortunately for me it's set up for 160 and I have frequency-agile gear for 10-160 also. Some are more comfortable being led (waiting to join someone else's QSO) and some are more comfortable leading, if required (calling CQ to create a QSO on a clear frequency). The former seems more prevalent in amateur radio, AM being no exception. Just look at the abunance of so-called 'nets' if you need proof. A lot of us grumbled over the years that the F.C.C. was not listening to our petitions, but then when it - to our surprise, I might add - it allowed us to move down to 3600 Khz., the first night it was full of AM, then, the frequencies became conspicuously quiet, so to speak. The sights that tickle me Pete is the crowd at the base of the flagpole. Hats with many patches and flashing leds all over them., Their name badges are the moving led type that scrolls their name and call. Some of them have hard hats with 2 meter rubber duckies mounted on top. If you ever wondered why pickups are popular down here, then imagine 3 big ole boys with big ole hats on their heads. You gotta have the room in the cab for the hats and spit containers. Many people think the ring worn into the rear pockets of their Wranglers are made by those flexible things bought at the funny counter in the drug store. They really are smokeless tobacco containers. Must be Craig. Reminds me of a guy from Amarillo, TX who attended hamfests all over the Southwest. He drove a Ranger pickup towing a 20 ft. sailboat. When he arrived he would put up the mast which served as a 80 meter vertical. He worked at Pantex and he would never let me see his rig. I always wondered if it was made of castaway bomb parts. The boat did make a good sleeping arrangement though. Have you ever seen a Suburban with the tri coil Hustler antenna set up? I didn't read most of this thread. I live in 6 land and know what the QRM is like... However, Bob has mentioned somthing that I've suspected for some time. The only GREAT activity around here is the Turlock Amateur Radio Club's auction. It's loads -o- laughs, and sometimes a bargain! I retire in a bit over a year. I plan on doing some 5 land fests just to screw up some arteries. Rib Eye steak and a pot of beans sounds pretty good right about now. Re: [AMRadio] 3870/QRM
Todd never order chicken in a fish place nor fish in a steak place down here. If you do, they will all taste the same. There is nothing like sitting around a bar-b-que eating then going home smelling like the smoke. Good BBQ eating habits include a garden hose to wash oneself down after lunch. What is a bib? By the way, out here we look at Florida as easterners. You gotta live West of the Big Muddy and like Dixieland, Real Country music not the current crap. You know, Bob Wills, Earnest Tubb, and one of the favorite songs is Big Balls in Cowtown You can do a mean two step to that one. We have our enclaves of the funny food places. Austin, Texas, places in Dallas, Houston, OKC, where they blend the front lawn and serve it in a glass. You need an extended driving vacation this away (as they say) so you can become indoctrinated. If you ever get sand in your shoes for more than a year, you will never want to leave. Jim W5JO . As far as the food, mom always referred to me as the family garbage disposal. You have yourself a deal, Brian. Although I have to say, depending on the distance, I'll probably fly. It comes from driving beat up cars for too many years and having too many breakdowns! That movie 'Deliverance' didn't help much, either.
