[AMRadio] CCA First Wednesday AM Night Feb 6th!

2008-02-03 Thread Larry WA9VRH

FIRST WEDNESDAY AM NIGHT!!! Sponsored by the Collins Collectors Association.

Wednesday February 6th,2008 on 3880 kcs at 7:00 PM local East Coast time
marks the start of the latest
chapter of First Wednesday AM Night, drawing hundreds of vintage stations
from across the country.

The event is anchored by a tall ship AM station in each time zone. The
East Coast and Central sections run
for 90 minutes in response to the tremendous participation in those time
zones. The remaining time zones
will be an hour. We encourage stations to check-in on AM using Collins and
other AM transmitters, new and
old. It's an opportunity to revel in this nostalgic mode, enjoy giving
vintage equipment a run, and sharing
some storytelling about classic vacuum tube homebrew and commercial designs.
Typically more than a
hundred stations take part in the evening's coast-to-coast AM event; by the
time it concludes at 10:00 PM

Local PST.

LISTEN for the following anchors and stop by to say hello, won't you? You
don't have to be running Collins

or vintage gear to be welcomed into the group.

7:00 PM-8:30 PM Local East Coast Time Anchor: Bob W0YVA

7:30 PM-9:00 PM Local Central Time Anchor: Jim W0NKL and Brian K0EFJ

8:00 PM-9:00 PM Local Mountain Time Anchor: K0OJ Jim and Chuck KD0ZS

8:00 PM-9:00 PM Local West Coast Time Anchor: WA6FIZ Mickey

We are still looking for additional anchors in the West Coast time zone.
Please contact me if you are interested!

Subject: [AMRadio] Wanted: Ranger front panel

I'm looking for a Johnson Viking Ranger front panel in good to excellent
condition. I have
a Ranger here with a pretty lousy looking front panel, and the one I bought off
of eBay
is not much better. Does anyone have one they might sell? I prefer only the
front panel
but might consider buying your defunct rig for parts.

Has anyone ever tried to repaint a Ranger front panel? I'd like to do it
myself if I
could not find a replacement in decent condition.

Best regards,

Gary, K7EK

Dee Almqiist (sp?) is yet another alternative, as Dee does the front
panels on Johnson gear, as well.

Personally, I don't give a damn about how something looks, as long as it

Dee has a silk screening process that he does to the front panel of

doubt, they come out looking better than they did when they were brand

I think I want to build up a single 6080, or 6SA7... some dual-triode
tube with substantial plate dissipation, and then modulate it with a
pair of the same.

[AMRadio] The Viking II is FINALLY starting to work

2008-02-03 Thread Ellen Rugowski
Hi Everybody,

As you may recall, I mentioned some time ago, that the plate current on the
finals of the Viking II I got dirt cheap, was well over 350 mA even without
keying it down in CW, when the high voltage was turned on. A lack of time and
some false leads kept me from finding the cause until late last night, when
spending several hours trouble shooting the Viking II (two of them on the
phone with Rodger, WQ9E, giving additional suggestions for things to check),
determined the problem. Biasing to the finals turned out to be OK. BUT, the
clamper wasn't doing a thing to clamp the current to the finals. It turned out
that whoever owned my Viking II sometime in the past, replaced the clamper pot,
with a multiturn, audio-style pot. Not only that, they had it's function
reversed. As a result, the clamper circuit was almost completely unclamped! I
was able to reset the clamper pot for 10 mA of plate idle current with the high
voltage turned on.

The Viker loaded up, and finally produced power (about 125W on CW, key down).
Plate current is not maxed, but still may be a little high (about 220 mA), on
key down. Also. a couple of times when I keyed down, I saw some smoke curling
up out of either the area of the finals, or the loading capacitor. I'm not
sure which is the culprit. I will admit, that the rig was very dirty/dusty,
when I first opened it up (I spent a fair amount of time vacuuming in it). So,
I'm not sure if it's dust cooking, or if a component is giving problems. Per
Rodger's suggestions, I'll check things out some more today, now that I'm not
so tired (I didn't finish working on it until almost 11:30 PM). It may also be
possible that the parasitic suppressors on the finals are going bad (their
wiring looks a little ratty), and as a result the resisitors inside of them are
carrying all of the load, and as a result, are starting to smoke.

73,
Ellen - AF9J

[AMRadio] Wiring

2008-02-03 Thread JT Croteau
Another tube newbie question from me...

When building simple regens and QRP transmitters, what type of wiring
should I be using? I've read that with regens, mechanical stability
is key and wiring plays an important role. Does this mean to go as
far as using solid conductors rather than stranded? The wire I have
on hand at the moment from other projects is some 16 ga. silver plated
teflon (19-strand I believe). Would this stuff work?

Lastly, are there any websites or reading material geared towards
newbie tube builders? I still have some real basic questions that I
am ashamed to ask about because I feel some of this stuff I should
probably know and probably should However, I'm still young was was
born in the solid-state era. *grin* I also don't remember much, if
any, tube stuff was actually taught for my ticket back in 1989.

Thanks

Yes, the final could have gone into parasitics and the suppressor

[AMRadio] Viking Matchbox

2008-02-03 Thread David Knepper
I received one response to my inquiry as to where the two variables would be
position to line up with the front panel knobs. That is, where are the
capacitors when the knob is at 0 or 100.

The responder told me that the lefthand capacitor is fully meshed when the knob
is at 0 - that does seem right to me. I would believe that it would be
fully messed.

Can anyone tell me the correct dial reading with both capacitors. The
differential to the right is the one that has be baffled.

Thank you

Solid versus stranded isn't the key point (although heavy-gage solid
wire is probably best) but rather that of the rigidness ofall the
circuit components. It is best to mount things in ways that stop them
from springing and boinging around when vibration is present. Use
of terminal strips/tie-points for every every joint (rather than
connections up in the air) for example...

Thanks for the info Bill, :)

Hmmm, so the shunts are those two loops on either side of the where the
center tap from T1 feeds onto the terminal strip. I didn't know that. I
thought it was the bridging wire across Postion 4 on the meter function
switch. As for the roller inductor - yes that's one of my concerns for
being the smoke generator. If it's going funky, I have no idea if it can be
repaired. I may have to get one out of a junker.

 Ellen,

It sounds like you are almost there !
I just got my VKII putting out power after replacing a broken and
 worn out roller inductor.
One thing that no one has mentioned is that the plate meter shunts,
both final and mod, that are located on a terminal strip near the
center rear under the chassis, can be poorly soldered if the rig was
kit built. They are only about 1/2 inch lengths of nichrome wire shaped
as little covered loops. Nichrome wire is not solderable so they must
have been treated originally for the solder to take. In anothe VKII I
have that was kit the solder connection had become unbonded and under
load was intermittent giving all kinds of current readings and behavior
including readings without the plate switch on. Just to let you know.
Another common problem is that the smaller silver mica loading caps
can short out and the loading controls will not behave properly. I
think that is a problem I am having now myself but haven't pulled the
front panel again to check them. They are under rated and known to
 become leaky.
Check out the condition of the roller bar also as mine had been worn
oval with erratic connection when trying to tune. The roller itself was
 ok.

 Enjoy !

 Hi, Ellen! :-)

Hi Geoff!, :)

Long time no hear!

Completely the expected output power for the indicated plate current.
220mA is about where the book says to load it on AM... I think you can

I'd prefer to get the plate current a little lower to destress the finals
(Like I do with my Globe Scout 680), but, I haven't been able to load things
much lower than 220mA.

good luck on finding that culprit. I hope, for your sake, that it's
 just dust.

So do I Geoff. If it's the Roller inductor in the loading mechanism going
out to lunch on me, I'm not sure if I can even repair it. I may have to get
one out of a junker (I'm wishing now, that I hadn't suggested lowballing our
ePay bid on the beater Viker II a couple of months ago). It only seems to
smoke if I key down for more than 5 seconds, or more than once in a short
period of time. Vikings are supposed to be over engineered in that regard
(some people have used them as broadcast transmitters 24/7 for years without
problems), so they shouldn't smoke! ;)

sometimes, it's hard to see the forest for all those trees in the way
;-) Take a break from your project once in a while and then come back
to it, to gain a new/different perspective.

Yuppers! I may take a quick and dirty look at the parasitic suppressors on
the plate caps (they're easy to check), but that'a bout it for today with
the Viker. If I remember right, they should real very little to no
reisitance through them, if they're OK. Oh well, at least The Viking II's
finally starting to work. The Scout 680 is fun to use. But there have been
times when I sure could have used the extra oomph from the Viking II.
Besides, my Viking II has the PTT mod installed in it.

Hi Steve,

I'm hoping it's as simple as that (they looked kind of ratty, when I pulled
the plate caps to do plate to grid checks). If I do have to replace the
resistors, is the wire gauge, and number of turns for the chokes, critical?

P.S. - were you on yesterday morning's net? Condx. sure were kind of weird

Re: [AMRadio] The Viking II meter shunts

2008-02-03 Thread doxemf

-Original Message-
From: Ellen Rugowski

Hmmm, so the shunts are those two loops on either side of the where the

center tap from T1 feeds onto the terminal strip. I didn't know that. I
thought it was the bridging wire across Postion 4 on the meter function
switch.

The other shunts are clustered on a terminal strip under chassis
between the 6146 skt plate and the front panel, I think. Don't have the
rig here. They are low value carbon comp and I had to change one that
had drifted. A meter does little good if it's not accurate. The 10 ma
clamp tube adjustment indication is so small
that it would not take much to be inaccurate. The screen dropping
resistor adjustment, the big slide resistor, interacts greatly with the
clamp tube adjustment. I kind of had to go back and forth several times
to get it all right. A VTVM is best for bias measurements as most DMMs
will load high imp circuits especially bias adjustments.

As for the roller inductor - yes that's one of my concerns for
being the smoke generator. If it's going funky, I have no idea if it
can be

repaired. I may have to get one out of a junker.

I got my replacement roller at a Hamfest quite some time ago. It was
used, not a Johnson but in good condition and exactly the same.

A real pain to replace ! Hopefully you will not have to.

73,
Bill, KB3DKS

Re: [AMRadio] The Viking II is FINALLY starting to work

2008-02-03 Thread sbjohnston

If I do have to replace the resistors, is the wire gauge,
and number of turns for the chokes, critical?

I haven't found it to be critical. I generally use the solid tinned
wire that radio shack sells on a small white reel, wrapped three or so
times around a 2-watt carbon resistor. The resistor is usually 47-ohm
or thereabouts.

No I wasn't on the AM net. At 9:30 CT I checked into WB9GKZ's classic
SSB net on 3840 kHz with my KW Electronics KW-2000B transceiver. I
tried to use it last week too but it needed fixin' before it was
reliable enough for actual use.

Tinned, but either would work.

Wrapped, but wound expresses it well.

Now I think you're kidding me.

Re: [AMRadio] The Viking II is FINALLY starting to work

2008-02-03 Thread Jose HF Silva
That was not my idea ;-)

It's mainly my lack of experience... as I was running
/ refurbishing an old Viking too and found many
obnoxious (air) suppressors all around and doubted
about their self-efficacy and so got the idea of
self-suppress them to compare the results ;-))
