Re: [AMRadio] Fasten your seatbelts - here we go for another ARRL ride

2009-09-24 Thread Bry Carling
Thank you Mac - I sure wish those buffoons would stop pushing
their albatross.

From: J.D. MacAulay, WQ8U jmac6...@yahoo.com

The October 2009 QST magazine, page 64, reports the actions of the 2009
second meeting of the ARRL Board.

The Board approved the establishment of a Study Committee to study,
 research and consider developing  a
PLAN TO MOVE THE US AMATEUR COMMUNITY TO NARROWBAND CHANNEL SPACING.
 (Emphasis mine)

One has to wonder who those folks really represent after their performance
with the frequency allocation by signal bandwidth push and now this.

Maybe all us AM Ops will be dead by the time their buracuracy gets through
all this process. - probably not though.

Time to start writing to Newington?

P.S. Don't forget the phone segment of the Classic Exchange CX is this
 Sunday.

Re: [AMRadio] Fasten your seatbelts - here we go for another ARRL ride

2009-09-24 Thread Bry Carling
So - did we miss anything here about 6m and 2m AM? Is that
affected by this proposal or not, Pete?

Maybe it is the principle of regulation by bandwidth that concerns Mac.

You would think that after the hugely unpopular proposal they made a couple of
years ago, that they would have learned.

From: manualman manual...@juno.com

You obviously either ignored, or didn't read, the actual article and the
section that referred to this activity and just read the summary.

It really said: The Board approved the establishment of a Study
Committee to study, research and consider developing a plan to move the
US amateur community to narrowband channel spacing in the VHF/UHF bands.
The Board felt that since the FCC has mandated that commercial radio
 move
to narrowband channels by 2013, those companies that manufacturer
 Amateur
Radio equipment usually follow commercial practice. The VHF/UHF bandplan
currently use 15 and 20 kHz FM channels. Amateurs are using narrowband
equipment outside the repeater sub-band because there is no real place
 to
 fit narrowband pairs.

None of this has anything to do with our typical HF operations. It's not
clear that even the upper end of 10 meters, where there is FM operation
and repeaters, is even included in the study, since VHF generally
 starts above 30 mHz.

[AMRadio] Power Transformer as Mod Transformer (was: Seventy Fiver)

2009-09-24 Thread Bry Carling
There is a great article on how to use power transformers like that - as
a mod transformer - available on line for free - by Tim, WA1HLR

I hope it helps you -

plan to build up one chassis as a 6V6 oscillator with pi-net. Another with a
 6AG7 with pi-net.
Then compair the output of the two plus check crystal current on both of
 them. Then I plan to
build up another one with a 6AG7 osc and 6L6 amp with pi-net and plug in
 coils. Then I plan to
build power supplies for these on slat board chassis and maybe use 5R4
 rectifiers as I have some
of these around here. Then maybe a modulator for the 6AG7/6L6 rig. For a
 modulation
transformer I am thinking of trying a 70 volt or 25 volt line transformer
 or/and a power transformer
having it's core restacked in E and I configuration with a gap between the
 two. The projects
won't cost much and I think they will be great looking. I'll use broadcast
 band variable caps in the
pi networks. (Duals for loading and singles for the tank circuit.). Maybe use
 some rigid clear
plastic tubing over old tube sockets for the plug in coils.

Re: [AMRadio] Power Transformer as Mod Transformer (was: Seventy Fiver)

2009-09-24 Thread John Coleman
That is a great article Brian, and Lee. I have done this a long time ago.
They work really well especially with the choke. They also make pretty good
output XFMRS for HiFi and PA. The old 200 watt XFMRs we once saw in the old
TVs are not as available as they once were.

Prior to the Switch Mode solid state supply that Modern TV use, but after
the big XFMRs and the 5U4s, there was a lot of constant voltage XFMRs in TVs
especially the hybrids. These are recognizable because they were always
accompanied with a 2-10 MF 600V capacitor in a can, possibly oil filled,
used on the saturation winding of the XFMR. I have found them to make very
good regulators for RCVRs, VFO, etc. They will maintain the supply voltage
constant to the VFO plate and heater even if the mains drop to 100V when a
big rig is key to XMIT. This way you don't slide up the band while XMITing.

I was able to order 20 using that promo code. Often I find that promo codes
are case specific although in this case it doesn't matter because I tried it
both ways and it works. I like the idea of populating the house cars with
one as well as my kids needs. This will leave a few left for friends.
Whenever someone gives me something it brightens my day. Once before I found
unusual coffee mugs that had a cool logo that said Radio Coffee with a
picture of a beaconing antenna tower. They were a hit and I was able to buy
them at a couple of bucks each too. Thanks for the heads up on that meter.

Thanks for the tip, Steve.

I just ordered 3 using the promo code - one for my emergency kit, one for

the office, and one for the garage. Note that shipping is a little steep ($

8.99) if you just order one.

Re: [AMRadio] MCM Electronics digital multimeter for $2.99

2009-09-24 Thread Tom Chesek
For $3 it is a good move if you only need a basic meter. It is nice to have
one in your car if you run into car problems. Your kids and grandkids can
use them to check batteries for their gadgets. You are correct that you
won't be doing an HV work in your boatanchors. The only downside that I see
is the A23 battery will cost nearly what the meter cost when you have to
replace it, but again this is a $3 meter and you can throw it away! Who
cares if the leads are permanently attached, again $3 meter.

Re: [AMRadio] MCM Electronics digital multimeter for $2.99

2009-09-24 Thread Vic Mukal
My favorite Fluke meter stays on my workbench for the boatanchor tasks but
these bargain meters are fine for the garage/auto work, around the house,
for emergencies where voltages over 300volts are rare. As said in other
posts, there is a place in our tech environment for a $3 that we won't care
if it gets knocked around or is not as precise as a $300 meter.

But buy what you need - don't buy 10 or 20 of them just to save on the
shipping. My junk box is full of excess goodies that I bought in bulk over
the last 40 years to save money and never have and will probably never
use.

I was able to order 20 using that promo code.
Often I find that promo codes
are case specific although in this case it doesn't
matter because I tried it
both ways and it works. I like the idea of
populating the house cars with
one as well as my kids needs. This will leave a
few left for friends.
Whenever someone gives me something it brightens
my day. Once before I found
unusual coffee mugs that had a cool logo that said
Radio Coffee with a

hit and I was able to buy
them at a couple of bucks each too. Thanks for the
heads up on that meter.

[AMRadio] Cheapo meters

2009-09-24 Thread CL in NC
This is a good deal on sale, but like fellow noted, 9 bucks to ship it is
steep.  Harbor Freight sells 3 different meters of this type, the cheapest
being $5 all the time, and usually goes on sale for a couple bucks. These have
detachable leads too.  Check them out if you have one in town, and save the
shipping.  All the el-cheapo meters come from China, and are marginal at best,
so don't expect Simpson dependability or accuracy.  They just might quit on you
at the most 'Murphy' moment of need.

Re: [AMRadio] Fasten your seatbelts - here we go for another ARRL ride

2009-09-24 Thread manualman
The proposal study seems to focus on the VHF/UHF FM repeaters (currently
15 or 20kHz channel spacing - based on 70's and 80's design criteria)
and moving to narrowband channel spacing (12 kHz or less). Since more and
more narrowband equipment is coming into service these days, and things
like D-STAR are growing fast, new repeaters can't fit into the current
band criteria and are setting up shop outside the designated repeater
sub-bands. there is nothing in the current rules to keep them from moving
into the band areas that are currently occupied by SSB and AM phone
operation. Hence the study to see what could be done, if anything, to
possibly restructure the current FM repeater sub-bands to lower the
channel spacing and thus keeping the FM repeater digital whatever out of
the current other modes parts of our present VHF/UHF phone sections.

[AMRadio] better meter, same price

2009-09-24 Thread Jim Isbell, W5JAI
The $2.99 meter at Harbor freight has removable leads, 1000VDC and
750VAC ranges, Ohms200 to 2000K, 10ADC and 200maAC and includes a
transistor tester and back lighting. I usually buy 5 each time I am
in there and I sometimes use them as panel meters in projects if there
is room behind the panel. Just set them to the scale you want, mount
behind a rectangular cutout to view the face, use a 9V zener to grab a
little power from the main circuit of the projector if you dont
mind changing the battery, leave it as is. Its cheaper than you can
buy a panel meter and you can set it to what ever range you want and
label it below the viewing port as to what it is reading. Save the
leads for when you connect your bench unit to a high voltage circuit
with it in AMPS mode and burn up a lead. ...Dont ask how I know.
BTW, its fused so only the lead takes the hit.

Another factor of the cheap meter in question is its size. I believe
it is smaller than the Harbor Freight units. Maybe that has a play in
the voltage limit.

Dimensions: 3 5/8 (H) x 2 (W) x 1 (D)

Shipping wasn't a problem as I was ordering a several other items from

Re: [AMRadio] better meter, same price

2009-09-24 Thread Greg Mijal

My experience with the little red wonders have been mixed. They will blow
if you try to read large amounts of current. Also, on the highest voltage
range there was a 50 v dc difference between the two meters I was using to
check out a plate supply. I think the manufacturer was more interested in
low voltage, low current measurents and didn't really build the unit to
handle tube gear sized power.
The Radio Shack $29.99 auto ranging meter is worse.
Very slow to auto-range and intermittant operation. Blows fuses frequently
too.
I just bought a $20 DMM from Sears and so far, it's seems to be ok.

And...

Consideration to rack placement is critical. If access to the Logitek's top
cover is needed for maintenance and its obstructed, it means removing every
single wire to an array of screw-down barrier strips. A better solution for
Logitek would have been to design a back-plane using miniature Euro-Block
connectors so that groups of plugs can be unplugged from a mating barrier
jack. Need to remove the mixer from the rack? No problem. Just unplug a
few connectors and reconnect when maintenance is complete.

For most equipment, removing a few wires is not problematic. But when you
consider the number of possible connections on the Logitek back-plane,
removing every wire can be a nightmare. Fortunately for amateur radio
purposes, not too many of us need a lot of inputs -- unlike typical remote
broadcast demands.

Amen to Steve's comments on Logitek. They run 120V. from the back panel to
the power switch on the front panel on a piece of Belden 8451 shieded pair
audio cable bundled in with the microphone lines from the back panel
connectors. Shall we say less than best engineering practices.

They were around in 1995 -- the last time I had seen a Logitek Mixer
installed. Other options existed then as well, including 6, 9, 12, and
15-pin Molex to keep wiring density manageable.

I believe someone said they could buy some meters at $3 plus shipping,
then bring them to a hamfest and sell them for $7 to $8. That's 133 to
166 percent mark up I'd pay a 4 to 5 buck premium to save the trouble
of ordering and paying the shipping, bringing it to me, etc. And you
still getting the meter below its normal catalog price. How is this
sad?

And of course, at a hamfest, you can look at a guy's price for
something and shake your head and walk on if you don't like it. Or
offer him less.

I second that motion.

When dealing with a small number of items, a high percentage profit is
needed to make it worth the time. If they bought 10 and sold them for
a $6 profit, thats only $60 for a lot of gathering and distributing.
Now if we were talking 100 items and all could be sold in one
afternoon at the Hamfest, that would be a different storymaybe
But just 10 items which would probably take a couple of Hamfests to
get rid of them all. Thats a LOT of work for 60 bucks!

Personally, I wouldn't do it just for dinner money!!

Huh? The only mentions of getting meters to give as gifts I saw were

What in the world is wrong with those comments? If someone said, I
gave nice meters worth $XXX to John Smith, Jim Doe, and Mary Dale -
they better reciprocate, you might have a point. But merely
mentioning that a guy likes to have some stuff around to give away to
friends is hardly a hidden agenda as you claim.

Setting aside that it is just nice to give a gift now and again, a good
way to encourage newcomers to a technical hobby or career is to give
them something interesting. And a useful tool like a multimeter is a
really good choice. I have a few of the Harbor Freight meters in my
office at work to give to young folks that come through and express an
interest in what we do.

Am I planting seeds of goodwill, just being nice, or do I have a hidden
agenda?
