Re: [AMRadio] You must see this.

2010-01-12 Thread Rob Atkinson
Okay Bob, well the ones I found were all old, probably from the 50s,
so that explains it. Still, they looked good and for ham shack
purposes are probably FB. BTW, if you go on eBay and look in the
category where these little tube amps are found (I forget where but if
you search something like Heathkit EA-2 or Heathkit EA-3 you may find
it) you'll see Bogens and Heathkits and other little class A p.p. mono
and dual channel amps going for $100 to several hundred dollars before
they even have any restoration work done on them, and these things
turn up at hamfests for well under $100. The Heaths make great
starter projects because they are simple and have the good Heathkit
manuals, and are pretty easy to work on. Those old vac. tube amps
were often designed to amplify photograph needle audio so they had
preamps built into them using 12AX7 or some other similar tube and are
just right for the low level product detector audio or can be bypassed
for the higher level of a low powered receiver audio output. I
imagine this is probably all old news for most of you.

Did you see that frequency response claim? 1/2 Db from 21 to 20 K. Now
that is flat. In my world I have some trouble understanding why people
buy a Lexus when a Mazda or Toyota will get one around quite nicely for
much less, but that is the free market.

What is disconcerting about building this type of equipment is that if
something happens to the owner most of the stuff is going to the
landfill. At least most ham equipment was transferred or sold to other
hams that kept it in the circle, but when you cross over into consumer
goods, that is gone and with it a lot of parts.

I notice the $85,000 price tag is from Christmas Eve in 2000. Wonder
why they haven't raised their prices. Can you imagine an set of
transformers for an amp at $28,400? Boy what I could do with that kind
of money and have left over.

Re: [AMRadio] AM TRANSMITTER RALLY

2010-01-12 Thread Bry Carling
Hey John,

Have you found any other guys on 50.400 MHz down there yet?

We had a net on that frequency every Tuesday night here in Central FL
until about a year ago. They moved it to 50.3 MHz SSB - ugh!

It is kind of seasonal though, and you can still sometimes find
guys on 50.400 MHz AM.

There is a national calling frequency of 144.450 for 2m AM and
I know that is still active in a number of areas around the country too.
Most rigs use 8025 kHz crystals X 18 typically.

See you on the air when the tropo starts lifting things up this way!

changed my mind about 10 minutes later but by then
it had gone. A
couple months later in the summer I saw another
one at the Six Meter
Club/Antique Radio Club swapmeet in Wheaton IL
near Chicago that was
around $80. Now, these were fairly low powered,
probably only 10 to
20 watts and mono. A buddy of mine grabbed the
one at the hamfest in
Wheaton. I've been coveting it ever since hi hi.
Actually made a
casual offer to buy it (he hasn't used it for
anything yet) not too
long ago. No deal. He knows it's a good one, and
it is beautiful.
So, keep ur eyes open, they're out there.

Why do I want them? I'm no audio guy. I like
the small tube amps to
boost the product detector audio to drive speakers
and give that tube
boatanchor sound out the back of a solid state
transceiver. I'm
getting by perfectly well with old Heathkit 12 w.
p.p. mono amps
though. I can fill the house with 75 meter AM
audio on a Saturday
afternoon if I want to.

[AMRadio] Millen Coil info

2010-01-12 Thread JAMES HANLON
Darryl,

Congrats on finding some nice pieces of Millen gear. You might enjoy visiting
the James Millen Society web page at
http://www.isquare.com/millen/millen-page.htm
. You would also be welcome to join the group.

You could certainly use standard B&W Junior (75 watt) coils for the 90800
exciter, but you'll need to make new jack bars for them. I have used a bar
made from "Plexaglass" or whatever we are calling it these days. I've used
banana plugs with the leaves stripped off leaving just the center pin for jack
bar pins. The same size coil is used in both the 6L6 plate and the 807 plate
position.

All of the coils are 1.5 inches inside diameter.

The 80 meter coil, Millen number 43082, is 2 inches long and has 40 turns. It
has a 7 turn link on the "B+ end" of the coil.

The 40 meter coil, Millen number 43042, is 2 inches long and has 22 turns. It
has an 8 turn link.

The 20 meter coil, Millen number 43022, is 1.5 inches long and has 9 turns. It
has a 2 turn link.

The 40 meter 6L6 cathode coil is wound on a 1 inch diameter form, is 3/4 inches
long, and has 8 turns.

I don't have a Millen 80 meter cathode coil, but I made my own from a pice of
B&W Miniductor. It is about 3/4 inches in diameter, 1/2 inch long, and has 16
turns.

If you have a grid dip meter, you can check the resonance points for the
cathode coils as plugged in to the transmitter. The 80 meter coil should
resonate between 80 and 40 meters, around 5 mc would be good. The 40 meter
coil should resonate between 40 and 20 meters, around 10 mc would be good.

I use a series string of five 9-volt transistor radio batteries for the
required 45 volt bias.

I'm not lucky enough to have a 90881 amp, but I will copy this message to the
James Millen Society reflector. Perhaps one of the JMS guys will be able to
give you coil information for the amp and for the 90800 exciter on 10 meters.

Have fun!

I am reminded of a drizzly day walking around the Shelby hamfest flea
market with my buddy Fred a few years ago. We passed a table set up
with embroidered aprons and other kitchen craft stuff and I started
talking about why in the world people would bring such stuff to a *Ham

Jim, That's the precise reasoning I use for rigs like the KW-1, SX-88,
etc. Think of what you could get for a fraction of the cost, and how
much money you'd still have in your wallet. For the $26-$30K price of
a KW-1 you could buy a nice BC transmitter, T-368, build a custom HB
transmitter, and still pocket $20K. Especially with the 'roll your
own' approach - think of what you could put together and the utility
you'd have from it. Not that the commercial gear isn't nice, and some
of it very useful and well built, but is it worth that much? According
to some, yes it is.

Money is only an issue if you don't have it, right? That leaves pure
desire, lack of skill or interest in building, or ego as the main
reasons for paying a lot for something like this. Sometimes the
'value' of something has little to do with the item itself, and more
with the perceived prestige of ownership. And other times we end up
saying "I know I paid far too much for that, but I really wanted it".

Fortunately my radio budget limits me to the '$100 or less'
transformers most days. (o:

I would never make it Bry. I don't have the guts to price something so
simple and standard at outrageous prices like these guys. Even when I
want to sell stuff I have here I never get those premium prices. But

would one get the iron? Gary/WZ1M is the only person I know that will
disassemble your transformer and rewind it, I believe all the other guys
want to furnish new iron, but I don't know where the get it.

Re: [AMRadio] You must see this.

2010-01-12 Thread Jim Wilhite

Re: [AMRadio] You must see this.

2010-01-12 Thread Bob Peters
My GOD... I cannot understand what type of person
would spend this kind of money for an audio amp!!!
Hams complain about a $5k RF Amp or a $2000
broadcast transmitter. I know that people pay
it... My boss has a pair of Grommes Tube amps that
are in the $1500 area. They sound fantastic. These
are the same guys that are using vinyl records and
not CD's... I love clean audio but no way that
much LOL

Here you go, Jim. This is the 304TL amp I
mentioned, made by a company
called Alum Rock:

One of my favorite eye candy sites for this stuff
is Moth Audio:

http://www.mothmuseum.com/

No idea if they're still in business, but their
Nitelite is not only
cool, it's a great way to put those old Eimac 15Es
to use. Wish I knew
where they get those domes and bezels, I'd build
my own.

[AMRadio] Disco Lites & TV Deflection

2010-01-12 Thread doxemf

Pete,
Remember the SWTPC 4 channel Color Organ design in one of the Electronics mags.
I built that thing in a 2' X 4' box with a celing light panel diffuser. Blue,
Green, Bed, and Yellow.
It used an actual 4 way X over design filter ahead of the triacs.
A great Psyc Lite !!

Bry,
I never tried your color TV trick but in the 70's being fresh from work at a TV
shop, while in a hotel on the road working sound for a band, the room TV was a
B&W of all things so I switched the deflection coil wires so that the picture
was backwards L/R. Tried it with a color set once too. Bet the service man was
really scratching his hesadLOL !!
Bet the color TV trick would look great on a small color broadcast monitor or
RGB computer screen.
