[AMRadio] homebrew isoloop control box

2009-04-29 Thread Rev. Robert P. Chrysafis
I have an AEA isoloop 10/30, but no controller for it. is it possible to
homebrew one?

I have about 10 junk boxes full of semiconductors and passive components,
boards and project boxes.

having the parts is more than likely not a problem, but i need to find
someone who has done this before and has a design that uses standard off the
shelf parts.

Thanks,

Rev. Robert P. Chrysafis

Re: [AMRadio] Fighting deed restrictions

2008-07-16 Thread Rev. Robert P. Chrysafis
My answer to the whole ccr debate is what happens 10-15 years down the road
when it becomes almost impossible to find a house outside of a deed
restricted property. around here it already has become increasingly
difficult to find non deed restricted property. ccr properties are popping
up at an alarming rate with no sign of slowing down even in these economic
times. actually these economic times may be driving the craze for affordable
housing.

so it is not simple as wright and wrong or black and white with this topic.

some of these deed restrictions are draconian and i beleive the government
should put restriction on what HOA's can and Can't do.

for anyone who hasn't seen it rent The Colony starring John Ritter. it's
almost scary how much was predicted in this movie that has become true over
the years.

would these been the same little busy bodies who complain about the
environment and the cost of utilities and gas while at the same time
fighting to not allow their neighboors to install alternative energy
products on their property? Ie: the guy who had to disable his wind
generator because it made a slight wooshing sound? the same ones who call
thew cops because your kids are laughing too loud at 3 in the afternoon?

I agree with you sign it willingly, you deal with it, but there needs to be
a limit to what can and can not be put into such contracts. they should not
be able to strip you of all your human rights and control every aspect of
your life via binding contract you know what thats called

How do you know it is out of compliance? There are measured radiation
limits. Every one of the new entertainment devises that has a remote
controller have a microprocessor that runs all the time unless the device
is

unpluged. You can get radiation off the cables. unplug all the cables and
see what you get.

I have a question. Suppose you have a Part 15 device in your home that
you suspect does not meet the standards of that part although certified
as such, what choice do we have in the matter?

I know for sure my TV set is in violation and contacted the manufacturer
about the problem. When I finished explaining what was happening, the
technician promptly hung up the phone on me.

So I want to go farther, how does one file a complaint about a Part 15
device? And would it do any good given the ARRL success with BPL?

Yea I have read it Bob. And given the attitude of the FCC I really don't
think they would take any action. The first answer is always, Move
something. I sure would like the FCC to get back into non-interference
and enforcement.

Jim/W5JO

I have haerd that the new flat screen TVs are the worst offeners. The
FCC's

solution is to have the owner of the device stop using it.

Well guys I put snap beads around the power cord (about 6 of them as I
recall) and still hear it on several frequencies in the 75 meter band.
It radiates as much as 50 ft. away and I don't think they should have
that much.

On top of that, the frequencies move when the state changes from off to
on. Like all of you my house if full of these devices. My HP computer
doesn't do this, my Canon multi-purpose printer doesn't do this, none of
the kitchen appliances do it, the DVD player doesn't and neither does my
electronic thermostat. All of which I can take a portable receiver and
go near and hear them on the same frequencies with the TV unplugged.

One leg of my 75 meter antenna is about 50 ft. away and the TV causes
spurs that can be heard that far away. I know it isn't the satellite
box and not the answering machine adjacent to it. Everything clears
when I unplug the TV. It is the first TV I have ever had that radiates
this much.

I avoid 4cx250 pull outs as they are almost always bad.
They may test fine, but they arc over after a while in use.
I have about 30 of them that do that.

As they are used, the stuff they made to coat the cathode
(so it emits electrons) gets deposited all over inside the tube,
and at some point they start arcing over.
It just seems to come down to run time (filiments on).

They tend to work for a while, then arc, and the more
you use them the more they arc, till next time when you
start over again, each time getting shorter before they arc.

Maybe reducing the voltage to say 1000 volts
(down from 2000) might give them more time.

I consider these tubes worthless unless they were not used
or have low hours on them.

Not sure what new ones go for, I got 4 new ones a few years ago
for $160.00, used ones used to be $5.00 and not usualy worth that.

[AMRadio] Fw: [RT] TX avail

2007-05-23 Thread Rev. Robert P. Chrysafis

- Original Message -
From: Michael Patton [EMAIL PROTECTED]
To: Radio Tech List [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Sent: Wednesday, May 23, 2007 1:00 PM
Subject: [RT] TX avail

Unless I get some interest, I am going tomorrow to cut up and salvage a
Bauer FB-5V 5 KW AM transmitter, vintage 1969. The factory test data
were signed F. Bauer.

I have a huge history with this unit; it was the first 5 KW AM rig I
ever worked on, when I became the CE at its station in 1977. I have
been involved with the engineering at that station for most of the
intervening years, and now they have hired me to demo the site, as they
have lost their lease and will be diplexing with a sister AM.

This unit was in standby service until a few weeks ago and it wouldn't
take much to make it right. The biggest problem is that it has had some
rust get in it, as it is ventilated to the outdoors through a tightly
sealed vent hood that tended to draw moisture back in when the TX's
blower was not running. For a long time after it became an aux (1984),
I kept the blower motor running 24/7 to prevent this problem--I even
rigged it so the blower would run without the filaments--but eventually
some other engineer decided otherwise and shut off the blower--and now
we've got some rust inside.

I hate to see it go, but I have no room and no real use for it. If
anyone wants to preserve a piece of broadcast history, or needs a
vintage 5 KW tube rig, call me TODAY and come and get it soon.
Otherwise, I'm salvaging the RF components and cutting the chassis up
with a torch.

First, my thanks to Grant for scanning and emailing me the Belar AMM-2A
Modulation Monitor manual I asked about just yesterday.

Second, my apology to Brian, Jim and the entire group for
misunderstanding which of the AM groups Jim was referring to. It can be
confusing trying to keep AM Radio, AM Window and AM Fone sorted out.
Thanks also to those who were quick to respond to me and encourage me to
hang in there.

I'll look forward to meeting as many of you as I can when I get my

Re: [AMRadio] Thank You and Toroidal transformers

2006-12-29 Thread Rev. Robert P. Chrysafis
Back in my C.B. days in west virginia we ran cable tv coax up the mountains
as far as a mile or two to a mountain top antenna. on each end we put 36ft
of rg8 or 9913 to acheive a match to the CATV Hardline. I'm not sure if
something similar would work for other frequencies. I don't see why not.

Subject: [AMRadio] Thank You and Toroidal transformers

Greetings Amiable AMers,

I am a real neophyte in HAM and AM radio but i. at least recognise, that
this is the group that leads the pack when it comes to genuine knowledge and
practical experience. As the New Year approaches, i want to express my
gratitude for the wealth of information which has come my way thanks to you.
As i am a farmer who still works the land with horses, i appreciate the
importance in keeping the old, tried and time-tested ways alive; not just
for nostalgia's sake but for the time when radios and the written word might
be one of the sole sources of communication. If one of those $10,000 digital
voodoo boxes breaks down there are only a few select experts that can even
diagnose, much less fix the problem. I take off my hat to expose my bald
head to all of you!!

As an added favour could anyone tell me what sort of toroidal core i would
need to transform 75 to 50 0hms. I was given a large quantity of CATV
hard-line and read that it would be well to match the impedance to the
antenna and the transmitter. Or do you think the Pi-network in the P.A.
would be able to match the 75 ohm? I would at leat like to know which cores
from Amidon would be the right ones in case i just want to construct a few
transformers for experience sake. Thanks so much for any help you can give
me.

Happy New Year to each and everyone!
