Actually, much of the "ton of junk" was acquired quite reasonably. Much
was new back in the 60's and 70's, and was "inherited" or was stuff I
had back then. The GPT-750 I purchased in 1973, for $350.00. Not a bad
value per pound. But $300-400 for an AC-1? I don't think so. Heck, I got
a Heath AT-1 just a couple years ago for $75.00. Oh yes, and a Davco
DR30 receiver for the same price. It just takes careful shopping, and
not depending on eBay.

Re: [AMRadio] April 1st already or a misprint

2006-02-28 Thread Tom
Again John, you missed the point. You have what a lot of people would
consider a "pile of crap" in your shack. I happen to think that you have
many desirable rigs. I also enjoy older equipment. I do not own an AC-1 but
would buy one if priced very low. Others that have an emotional attachment,
possibly due to having owned one as a Novice etc., value that rig
differently. They don't value it on technical merits. Heck, if you went on
technical merits you would dispose of much of what you have and only keep
the high-end stuff, Someone might be lucky to find an AC-1 cheaply if they
wait long enough but the reality is that right now they are very pricy. I
have a 1960 transistor radio that I bought for $135 three years ago that now
can be found for $60 or so. That is the marketplace fluctuation. There are
two hams presently putting together a kit of parts for what they call the
Ameglo GB-1. It is an AC-1 lookalike (as much as possible with today's
materials) to help fill the void of the Ameco.

You are absolutely right. "Sucker" was a bad choice of words. I apologize
to all those who bought AC-1's at $300-400. After all, look at what you
have, a dandy little 15 watt crystal controlled transmitter, complete with
unique chirp so you will be recognized.

I think "idiot" would have been better.

Ah, Charlie, you should see what the AC-1 brings on the e place. That thing
is worth more than its' weight in gold. I wish I had mine. I lost it
somehow. I gave $5.00 for it. Worked 32 states and Ontario back in my Novice
days(1972-73).

Whether it's religion or old radio prices, it's the natural order of things
to consider anyone with views or attitudes unlike our own as either fools or
crackpots :-)

Anyone have a late clean 75A-4 for sale for something under $100?

Next time you find one in the proverbial dumpster (that will most likely
also yield a couple of Desks, a Johnson 500, and a NIB late serial 75A4),
grab the AC-1, and then sell it to me for $18.70. That's the 1960 Lafayette
catalog price for an AC-1T.

Sort of a "money where the mouth is" approach :-)

That's close to the lower end of the typical price range. An unbuilt one
recently changed hands for close to $900.

Now, you may or may not think that's reasonable, but that's kind of the way
things are at the moment. The little Ameco has become something of a
collector's item.

It is a highly desirable collectable radio. Three sold recently on eBay by

each. $249 looks right in line. There is a AC-1 reflector because of the
