I'll bet Otis may actually have some of those guys. Maybe even you
Don. I heard tell he had quite an extensive collection, I just don't
know if he's kept them after all these years. We'll soon find out
when John/BXO goes over there.

[AMRadio] Re: Vintage recordings and preservation

2006-09-19 Thread A.R.S. - W5AMI

Within the next week, I will create a an upload system on the web that
will allow those who already have MP3's or WAV recordings of vintage
QSOs to send the file directly to an archive so that we can start
getting all these in one place for playback.

I've developed a MySQL database system that was for use in scientific
analysis and observations that I can modify to work more along the
lines of this project, allowing users to categorize and/or filter the
recordings they want to see listed, such as date range, mode,
call-sign, region, etc., all dynamically. It would be a start at
least, and I wouldn't have to code a a new system from scratch. So,
the bottom line is this; soon after we start collecting enough MP3
files in the archive to make it worthwhile, they will be available for
anyone to listen to.

Some of you have mentioned that you already have some audio files, so
hang on to them and I will inform the group as soon as the upload
section is complete and how you can access it.

With John's (KB6SCO) contribution in the media transfer/conversion and
needed clean-up, I truly think this project could develop into a
wonderful resource in amateur radio history.

I want to openly thank all of those who have expressed interest in
this project so far. The amount of email I've received already has
been an eye opener for me to see this through. My time is limited,
however I will do as much as I can to keep things interesting. John's
gracious offer to convert the media for anyone has added to the
reality of this concept.

Remember, regardless of the media you have, John can most likely
convert it, and return your original. John and I will work together
on centralizing the archives so that the audio can be accessed in one
place by means of browsing or search-able database queries. All you
will need is a player for your operating system, Windows, Linux, etc.
that will support MP3 media files.

Thanks Again!

Brian / w5ami
PS: Don't forget to spread the word that we are in search of vintage
recordings of actual QSO's!

[AMRadio] Re: Vintage recordings and preservation

2006-09-18 Thread A.R.S. - W5AMI

John / KB6SCO has offered to assist in transfer of ANY media that we
can muster, from Edison cylinders, wire, any and all tape media and
film. John has the knowledge to get this part of it done, as he is an
Audio Professional, and spent 20 years at MGM and 10 of which he was
Chief Engineer there.

John will make a more detailed post later on what he has to offer in
getting the media transferred, etc. I for one will really appreciate
his assistance and knowledge he has to offer.
Now we are not limited to just old tape, which means audio could be
made available going back much further in time!

Now the issue at hand is to find the vintage recordings. As I
mentioned to John, I suspect there are a lot of old timers out there
who are not on the internet that may have old recordings sitting in a
closet or something. Hopefully not the attic.

One idea I've had is to run an ad in QST seeking out these recordings.
Maybe offer some sort of certificate or gift in exchange for them to
loan the media to us long enough to make the transfer to digital.
Some may be willing to just give us the media so long as something
useful is done with it.

Lets keep the ideas flowing for this project. I think it would truly
be interesting to most any ham.

Subject: [AMRadio] Vintage recordings and preservation

There are bound to be some folks out there who have possession of
vintage on-the-air recordings from the 60', 70' and 80's, maybe even
earlier. I know at one time Otis (K5SWK) had many, and some dating
back into the 50's. If these exist, they should not be allowed to
deteriorate or be overwritten before first getting them on digital for
preservation, either on the web or CD/DVD.

I propose that if you know of any such recordings, we somehow get
these copied. I would be willing to do some of them myself. Any
 other takers?

It would be nice to have such a nostalgic and historic resource for
QSOs forgotten placed on a website or available on CD. Gary at
amfone.net might be willing to utilize space for such media, or I
would be willing to dedicate webspace for the project...gigs if
 needed.

Let's get together on this and try to gather what we can for now and the
 future!

Anyone have contact with Otis lately? John/BXO? I know he used to
mention on the air that he had quite a library of tapes, however that
has been a long time ago.

I have also posted a message similar to this on amfone.net...

Thanks for the offer Craig.

I think the best way to help right now is to start asking around, on
the air, off the air, nets, etc., for leads on who might have some old
recordings. Finding the meat for this project is going to be a
challenge in itself.

Hey Gary!

Let's get 'em in the public domain! Can you send them to John/KB6SCO
for transfer to digital? When we get enough, we will get them on the
web somewhere, indexed, etc. Do you have any idea what time frame
these were made? Old Hoisy would be proud to know his work was out

Somewhere I think I still have a recording of Alton, W5FAP, as heard on 20
meters in Mississippi one Sunday afternoon in the early 70s.

If I can find it, I'll transfer it to mp3 and make it available to whomever
does such an archive.

It's too bad I didn't keep recordings I made of W9ZKN, W6QS, and other 20
meter big guns in the late 60s. Those guys gave a whole new meaning to the
phrase full quieting.
