Yeah well after buying more than a couple of big mod transformers with shorted
windings, the gold turned out to be lead.

I suppose you could ship even the big stuff through UPS. It would still be
cheaper than car rental and fuel.

By the way, I still have this Raytheon 2.5 KW mod transformer.

Have you ever seen a grown man cry? That is why I quit riding my motorcycle

Hi Joe,

I keep saying I want to go to Fair Radio, but just haven't managed to make it
yet. Also, the Air Firce Museum is in Dayton if you have any spare time after
all that. Sounds like you have a great deal going with the fly-stay-drive

Hi John,

I should have mentioned to everyone in my prior message...

I booked my entire trip more than a month ago through AAA. I have a hotel
for four nights - Thursday through Sunday, a rental car, airfare, and
surprisingly, I received my Hamvention tickets in last Friday's mail.

Finding lodging wasn't too difficult, though I am staying on the south-side
of Dayton about 18 miles or so from the Hara Arena. The Marriott-Fairfield
Inn where I'm booked required a minimum four night stay, so perhaps that
helped with availability. I do see now that the hotel is filled.

I am looking forward to it. I even treated myself to a new, suitcase with
TSA locks, and roomy enough to bring home any goodies I do decide I can't
live without. Oh, and since my plane does not leave till Monday evening, I
might even venture a hour north and pay Fair Radio a visit.

Hi Joe,

The main thing I can tell you is that if you don't have motel reservations,
start hunting now. They tend to go fast, especially the cheap??? ones!

I don't know what is going on with advance ticket sales, but I haven't
received mine yet and I don't know anyone else who has. According to their web
site, requests received prior to April 4th were mailed on April 11th. The mail
around here isn't that slow!

You will have a good time, especially since it is your first Dayton. The
restrooms are crowded, the on site food is edible but expensive, but you can
stand
it for a few days.

73 and have a great trip.

I'll be attending my first Hamvention this year. It's a major trip for me
since my home QTH is in Utah. I was first licensed in 1980 at the age of 16
in California, and it has been a dream of sorts ever since to attend.

Now, reading the horror stories of the deplorable restroom facilities,
overall poor condition of the Hara Arena, et al, I was somewhat apprehensive
about my plans. I've also read many positive experiences of people's
attendance. I'm looking forward to it.

I am attending primarily to meet a couple good friends that I've never had
the pleasure to meet in person. Ironically, we never spoke on the air, but
have a mutual interest in crystal radios, regens, and such, and participate
on the Crystal Set Society's online discussion group. My friend, however is
indeed licensed in the UK (their Tech equivalent), and he has attended
Dayton annually for a number of years now.

I'm happy to say there is little I "need" to add to my collection. It will
be great to finally meet some people I consider friends, and perhaps my
overall interest in ham radio in general might be rekindled a bit.

But if you've got good junk to sell, it's not a bad deal.

And it's still a great place to meet friends - its too bad things are so
screwed up this year. There's nothing like it in the US, and the guys that
are trying to do it deserve a little support in pulling it off, even if
they're learning on the job.

I admit I bring home less, but it still brings out all sorts of old stuff.
I dragged home an ugly 30$ SX-96 last year that was mostly working and have
had a ball recapping and fiddling with it this winter. And found a 5$ audio
transformer new in the box for my SW-3 - what are the odds of that?

But I remain convinced anything cheap and good is gone 10 minutes after the
tailgates open, usually on Friday morning.

73, and see you there, I hope. Scott

Bob -

YES! I think so, at least. Last year was the best year I think I've
had as far as enjoyment. The fall version ended up getting rained out
starting Friday night, but Friday was still a good time. For the
spring dates, wx was fine and so was the socializing and gear. Went
into Concord for dinner at Cheers with a bunch of the AMers, lead by
Larry NE1S in his early 60s Ford Falcon, complete with Elmac under the
dash. Brought 4 pieces of gear with me, got rid of them all but
brought 4 different ones back home (at least they were smaller).

Looking forward very much to the 'fester in 3 weekends. It's always
great to see the gang, soak up some suds, and hunt around the grounds
for goodies. Fortunately, I'm looking more for pieces-parts and less
for gear these days.

BTW, the 'fest is now held in Hopkinton, just west of Concord, and at
a fairground very much like the old Deerfield site.

Be there or B² !

RE: [AMRadio] DAYTON FLEA MARKET

2006-04-18 Thread Donald Chester

Well, based on what I am seeing, I am very seriously thinking of changing
my

plans.

I doubt that I'll make it this year due to the screwed-up date. Can't get
away from work that Friday. But the last couple of times I went, I could
have fit everything I bought into one supermarket shopping bag. One of the
reasons I have always gone is the "goodies." It's less and less
cost-effective to go, every year.

I can recall not too many years ago that I would leave the hamfest with the
car dragging the ground, the trunk, back seat and even the passenger seat if
I had no riders, packed with stuff.

The stuff that I like to bring home is getting rarer and harder to find; I
already have much of what I see at the flea market; my storage space is
running low. Therefore I have become much more selective about what I bring
back.

But mostly I just don't see much there that interests me any more.
