Jim,

File a complaint with the FCC.

They are the folks that do the type acceptance. Their enforcement
branch "should" deal with it.

I know for sure my TV set is in violation and contacted the
manufacturer about the problem. When I finished explaining what was
happening, the technician promptly hung up the phone on me.

So I want to go farther, how does one file a complaint about a Part 15
device? And would it do any good given the ARRL success with BPL?

How do you know it is out of compliance? There are measured radiation
limits. Every one of the new entertainment devises that has a remote
controller have a microprocessor that runs all the time unless the device
is

unpluged. You can get radiation off the cables. unplug all the cables and

Well guys I put snap beads around the power cord (about 6 of them as I
recall) and still hear it on several frequencies in the 75 meter band.
It radiates as much as 50 ft. away and I don't think they should have
that much.

On top of that, the frequencies move when the state changes from off to
on. Like all of you my house if full of these devices. My HP computer
doesn't do this, my Canon multi-purpose printer doesn't do this, none of
the kitchen appliances do it, the DVD player doesn't and neither does my
electronic thermostat. All of which I can take a portable receiver and
go near and hear them on the same frequencies with the TV unplugged.

One leg of my 75 meter antenna is about 50 ft. away and the TV causes
spurs that can be heard that far away. I know it isn't the satellite
box and not the answering machine adjacent to it. Everything clears
when I unplug the TV. It is the first TV I have ever had that radiates
this much.

File a complaint with the FCC, Jim. Since the tech for the manufacturer was
so rude and refused to even discuss it with you they may know of the problem
and just hope it will go away without complaint. If they are at fault, and
it sure seems they are, maybe others have already filed complaints and yours
will be the one that gets the FCC rolling.

Re: [AMRadio] Part 15 Devices

2007-12-02 Thread jeremy-ca
Beads over antenna cables and line cords only blocks common mode signals. RF
can still flow thru line cords and into the house wiring or thru the coax
into other equipment.

Many years ago Doug DeMaw had a QST article on a brute force line filter
that actually works well. Ive built several inside outlet strips and plug
all sorts of offending equipment into them.

I also use ferrite beads but not the snap on type which are 43 mix and
fairly useless at low frequencies. A mixture of 77 and 43 mix beads that
just slip over RG-6 work best for me followed by a good HPF on TV's, VCR's,
DVD's etc.
Line cords get wrapped on a 33 mix ferrite rod or you can use a 77 mix
FT-240 size toroid.

If the TV is radiating through a plastic cabinet you can line the inside
with aluminum foil or spray on a conductive coating.

Since I operate from 1.8 MHz thru 10 GHz I sorta got obsessive about RFI in
both directions. It takes some time, effort and money to do it all.

A friend of mine said that when he keys up his 100 watt 2 meter FM
transmitter within 50 feet of the LED traffic light in his town, the green
light blinks. Ever hear of that?

Tony, I didn't say, but it is a Zenith about 4 years old. Piece of
crap, will never buy another Zenith. Even the seller dumped them.

Doubt the sat box is the culprit. Are you sure all connections are
tight and not leaking. Some of the stuff installed by the "techs" are
really terrible.

Jim/W5JO

missed the first of this thread which tv was it ? i just bought a new
vizio and something is putting lines thru it. and i am on direct tv..
have unpluged the sound system and all the dvd and vcr players . next
is to change out the sat receiver with another one i have and see if
that helps. i am starting to think it is electrical in nature and will
have to get out my DF unit and start looking.

2007-12-02 Thread Anthony W. DePrato

Thanks Jim: that is a real shame i remember when Zenith was top of
the line. but like all the other US brands that is the word
U.S. .made in the usa of asia and china.. i also bought a small one
for the kitchen ill bring it in and see if the lines show up on it.
i have a cable end set that i had at work. just have to dig it out
of the boxes of tools i brought home when i retired. Yes everyone
they were mine. hi hi.. put on a lot of F connectors . so i am going
too redo all the F connectors with the good ones i brought from work
nice water tight O ring units. have a new box of RG 6 also so guess
ill just make up all new interconnect cables also. hope you can find
your problems. put an ad in the paper and sell that one and get a
new one.. let us know what you find good luck with the FCC.

If it is one of the plasma screens, they are known for noise from DC to

I know for sure my TV set is in violation and contacted the manufacturer
about the problem. When I finished explaining what was happening, the
technician promptly hung up the phone on me.

Tell me about it! I have one of those despicable devices, not 50 feet from
my house.
I have an S9+30 dB noise from the BC band right up to 6M! Vile trash from
DC to Daylight, indeed!

Don't even go there with me! My 20-something neighbor across the hall has a

I'm finding the LCD widescreen TVs to be reasonably RF-quiet. The big CRT
TVs are a bit more noisy, but the plasmas are terrible.
