Sure, there is an unfortunate birdie that messes up SO50 and AO27, but so what. I resurrected an old Kenwood TM-G707A to deal with those two FM birds, and it works great. I also have an FT-857D which also does a nice job on those two birds. I would naturally expect the comments on this board to lean towards the IC-910H, and, indeed, it is a fine SATELLITE rig. But, my number one preference in operating is the HF bands, not satellite. Guess what I am saying is if VHF/UHF and satellite is your only operating preference, then the Icom might be a better rig. But, if you also like to do the HF bands with an occasional hop to the satellites, the TS2000 is pretty good. Is the TS2000 the best HF rig? Probably not, but it's the only one that offers pretty good HF operation AND reasonable satellite operation in the same box. I don't think the 910 or the 847 has any birdies in the sat frequencies. It anyone finds any I would like to know. It is a shame about the 2000, it is a much better HF TXR then the 847, but the birdie at 145800 is the satellite use show stopper. I have all three here in the shack, and a blackbox 2000 as my HF mobile. The only one I purchased new was the 847 in 1998 or so. The 910, and 2000's were picked up used at a very good price, the good deals are there if your patient. I would recommend a used 847 over the 2000. The money saved over a new TS-2000 purchase can be used to buy a better HF performing rig then the 2000. My 2 cents. 73 Jeff kb2m From: myles landstein [mailto:myles.landst...@gmail.com] Sent: Friday, July 17, 2009 8:22 AM To: Jeff KB2M Cc: AMSAT-BB@amsat.org Subject: Re: [amsat-bb] Re: IF you had a choice... honestly don't recall, I bought my ts2000x about 3yrs ago now. Tony as an outdoor photographer I've been using some of the commercial products like Comp-u-shade, and many others that I purchased on ebay, to be honest non of them last much longer they easily tear apart or get lose, so I end up making my own with black cardboard or black binder plastic and use velcro to attach that to the back of the laptop, look for them on the market and try to duplicate them first before you buy one. [amsat-bb] Re: Walter Cronkite SK 1916-2009
I grew up watching him. My Mom used to let me stay home sick from grade school so I could watch the Mercury, and then the Gemini missions, as long as they were only in space ONE day! I saw him cry when Kennedy was assassinated, and watched him choke up when Apollo 11 landed on the Moon. I didn't always agree with him, but I respected him. He was from a different world than the Journalists of today. Good bye, old friend, and may you rest in peace. [amsat-bb] WD9EWK @ Williams AZ hamfest - Friday, 17 July
Hi! Day 1 of the two-day hamfest is complete. Not many attended the presentation I had, but I was able to work several passes throughout the day from outside the hamfest's exhibit hall. I was on all 3 FM satellites, plus a couple of VO-52 passes in the morning. Thanks to all the stations across North America who made contacts with WD9EWK during the day. While I was on those passes, I heard WA8SME and several of the teachers attending his ARRL Teacher's Institute session in northern California. It was very nice to hear - and work - them. Saturday will have more activity from the hamfest. I will try to get on more passes throughout the day. If you hear me on, please give me a call. For VO-52 in the morning, I will be somewhere around 145.910 or 145.915 MHz USB on that satellite's downlink. I'm expecting the crowds listening in on these passes will be larger, since there will be more attending the hamfest on a weekend instead of at the end of the workweek. The hamfest closes at 1700 local ( UTC), and I do not plan on being on additional passes from this area in the evening. I'll need to pack up my hamfest stuff and get ready for a few days on the road. I'm planning an early departure from here on Sunday morning, with the plan to be around DM47/DM57 in Utah on Sunday afternoon's AO-27 passes. 73!
