[amsat-bb] Software for antenna rotators

2009-12-15 Thread codrut buda
I hope somebody will find usefull the PstRotator program. It can be downloaded
from
www.qsl.net/yo3dmu/index_Page346.htm
PstRotator handles just about every controllable rotator in common use:
Prosistel "D" and "C", RT-20 and RT-21 Green Heron, DCU-1 HyGain, RC1 MDS,
Rotor-EZ Idiom Press, Easy-Rotor-Control, Yaesu Az and Yaesu Az/El GS-232A and
GS-232B, M2 RC2800, AlfaSpid RAK Az and RAS Az/El, Easycomm, ST3 Fox Delta,
Endeavour Electronics AutoTracker, ZL1BPU, EGIS, Create RAC825, EA4TX Arswin,
DL7AOT, LBV Tracker, PrimeSat and VK5DJ.
PstRotator provides automatic tracking for satelites and EME, using for this
WXtrack, WinOrbit, Orbitron, Nova for Windows, Sat_Explorer, SatPC32, WSJT,
Z-Track, GJTracker, EME System, Trak_SM, or HRD Satellite Tracker. Also it
works with some contest loggers like N1MM, TACLog and Win-Test. Other programs
supported are MixW, DXView and VQLog.
Tracking the moon is easier now using an internal algorithm.
PstRotator supports multiuser remote control over TCP/IP.

[amsat-bb] XW-1 13:20Z pass audible

2009-12-15 Thread Bruce Robertson
Listening to this pass right now, using Mineo's keps. Quite audible
with very few fades from 5 deg. with a 1/4 wave vertical and a
mast-mounted preamp. Telemetry does have a 5 second period about every
minute or so when it goes off. The keps are not yet suitable for
doppler tuning: I'm tuning up by 2kHz right now. Hooray for the
Chinese amateur community and for those who allowed the launching
hardware to be used for our benefit!

Don't bother with HRD if all you want it for is satellite work. HRD's
satellite function is a bolt on to the whole suite; SatPC32 is the tool
for the job, has the most excellent back-up service from its creator and
is of benefit to AMSAT.

[amsat-bb] Re: [VUHams] Indian Institute of Technology Bombay Student Satellite, Pratham

2009-12-15 Thread Gopal Madhavan
Hello Johny

While it is appreciated that you students are planning to make a satellite, I
would just like to remind you that using amateur radio frequencies by non
licensed amateurs is just not permitted and WPC will not allocate such
frequencies unless the users have valid licenses. I am sure that you are
already aware of this.

For your information another university is also planning such a project and
there faculty and students are busy studying to get their licenses before the
satellite is built.

I would suggest that you also do likewise or request WPC to allocate
frequencies that are outside the amateur bands, so that licensed amateurs can
also use their setup to monitor and assist you.

This is not to discourage the project but only to caution you on the use of
allowed frequencies.

Best regards

Hi Jhonny,

It is nice to see your mail just after the review we had in ISRO Satellite

be useful to augment your mission goals. Looking forward to meet you and your

Hello everyone,

I am Jhonny Jha, student of IIT Bombay, and the project manager of a student
satellite initiative of the institute. We started the project a year back and
we are currently entering the detailed designed phase of our satellite. The
project is an initiative undertaken jointly by the institute and ISRO. Payload
of this mission is to measure the total electron count of the atmosphere using
the technique of faraday rotation. In order to implement this, we have two
monopoles onboard working in VHF and UHF amateur bands and a Groundstation at
IITB to receive the signals. The total electron cont can be estimated by using a
simple circuitry after your receiving antennae which gives the polarization of
the incoming signal. In order to make the mission successful, we have also
included a social goal in our mission statement, wherein we aim at teaching
students from across the country the intricacies of antennae designing and
fabrication. We have already c onducted 2 national workshops for the same.

We want the amateur radio community to help us in our mission by setting up
mini groundstations all over the country and measure the polarization of the
incoming signal. Incase, we have a large number of stations spread across
India, we would have more datapoints and can even perform ionospheric
tomography with the data. This would help create a 3D map of electron count
over India, which we currently do not have. This data can be used in the field
of GPS correction, incase the country aims for its own GPS system in a few
years.

I request wholehearted support from the amsat and Ham community in this project
of ours.

Regards,
Jhonny Jha,
Project Manager,

[amsat-bb] Re: XW-1 CW beacon

2009-12-15 Thread Alan P. Biddle
Just copied a nice pass over the eastern US. Signal was very loud. Using
Object A, USB, I had to tune down 1000 Hz. SATPC32 tracked the signal
throughout the entire pass with no manual tuning required. AOS and LOS
frequencies were the same, with TCA being about 200 HZ higher.

Attached are some software copied CW. The spacing was a bit odd, and some
of the strings of "Ts" are most like "Os."

The high orbit will make this a good one to work if all the transponders
come up.

Congratulations,

Alan

[amsat-bb] XW-1 Over North America 15Dec09 1517Z

2009-12-15 Thread John Papay
The XW-1 CW Beacon was heard over North America
this morning with an excellent signal and tone
quality. It sends a long string which changes
a bit on every transmission.

The keps are a bit off since the bird went over
the horizon prior to the prediction. I lost it
when it was still at 2.7 degrees according to
SatPC32. The doppler correction is off as well
indicating changing keps. Hopefully we will get
some better keps soon. The bird is apparently
ahead of the predicted position.

A recording of XW-1 is on my webserver:

http://www.papays.com/XW-1_15Dec2009_1517z.mp3

At one point the antenna had to turn around. I had some
copy on this bird while the antennas came around 180 degrees
indicating a strong signal. I noted that there were polarity
shifts between right and left hand circular. At one point
I tuned to the packet frequency to see if there was any activity.
I heard none but only listened for a short time before returning
to the beacon frequency.

Congratulations to the Chinese Team that designed, built and
launched this satellite. It is off to an excellent start. We
look forward to having it operational soon and for many years
to come.

73,
John K8YSE EN91dh

0404 EDT pass i was alone signal good S4 S5 start to copy at 12 deg
0612 EDT pass start to copy at 8deg copy was peaking at 20 db over my noise
floor signal only interrupted by blocking object. It was a 65
deg elevation pass here. Made QSO with N8BBQ Edward and N8MH Mark

Near the end of the pass a rapid pulsating tone carrier appears it was just at
the same level as other signal at times.

As per my test S band signal is lower at this attitude on low pass to a point
to be weak to be received. Depending where the satellite is
also made a big change in the signal strength when he pass my latitude on one
occasion the signal increased by 1 s unit

Respected Sir,

We were cautioned regarding this by Mr. Mani Sir from ISAC. The license is
issued under name of one of our students who has an amateur license. We are
also planning to give an exam in the coming months to get more licenses so
that we do not have a single person to bank upon for future missions. We
have a HAM club at IIT Bombay which is currently co-ordinating this entire
process.

[amsat-bb] XW-1 again over Europe

2009-12-15 Thread OZ1MY
Hi all,
It works great.

Thanks to Nigel for the new keps for Object A:

XW-1
1 36121U 09072A 09349.53641119 -.0045 0-0 0+0 031
2 36121 100.5050 046.6267 0007989 035.4736 324.6735 13.1639108550

I changed the name from Object A to XW-1 :-)

It works on SatPC32 and NOVA for Windows.

On the pass with AOS at 16:45:50 UTC here in Copenhagen the tone did not
change (to my old ears) over the whole pass.

Used 435.789400 MHz as the center frequency on the IC-910 in USB.
The usual ICOM offset in USB.

Nice 20 minute passes and long range. Looking forward to the transponders.

[amsat-bb] XW-1 Western North America 15Dec2009 1702z

2009-12-15 Thread John Papay
XW-1 was again heard over western North America
with an excellent signal. The new keps provided
by Nigel G8IFF/W8IFF were used for Object A and
found to be spot on. I set SatPC32 for automatic
operation with the TS2000 in the CW mode and the
computer clock synchronized with NIST. I never
touched the radio dial or the antennas during the
entire pass and as you will hear on the recording,
the CW tone never changed. The TS2000 was updating
the frequency every second.

Again I found polarization shifts but the bird did best
on Left Hand during most of the pass. This was a 22 degree
pass for me to the west.

One of the three letter code groups changes on every string of CW
starting with BJ1SA XW XW etc and ending with XW XW. For example,
the 3 letter groups for some successive transmissions were:
TNE TDT AAE ATE 4VE A6E TBT 4VE T6E ATE. Every other code group
in the string stayed the same, at least during this pass.

I started the recording late. It is much better than my first
recording with the older keps on the amsat webpge.

http://www.papays.com/XW-1_15Dec2009_170842z.mp3

Let's hope we can start using the v/u transponders for voice/cw
soon.

Thanks again to all who were involved with this satellite.
It is operating very well.

If my numbers are correct, this bird is certainly much higher than AO-27 and

Hi,

With the help of www.ham.vgnet.nl/downloads/XW-1_Telemetry_Format.pdf
I decoded the beacon information I received.

The output power is fluctuating, is there any idea why this is happening?

And an other thing, don't we miss a lot of information within the
telemetry? channels 6 to 13 have a value 000?

Maybe my decoding isn't correct and other amateurs have other information.

Hi Wayne,

The folder is hidden, as I recall.  It's here on my WinXP Pro system

You may have to adjust your folder options to show all folders, etc.

Hope that helps!

Hi,

Add the following http://www.celestrak.com/NORAD/elements/tle-new.txt to
your keppler data and select object 2009-072A. When XW-1 is added to the

That it! "Show hidden files" defaulted to "off" when I recovered from a
hard disk crash a couple months ago. Apparently it also prevents the

[amsat-bb] XW1 heard in Holland, keppler comment, and audio recording.

2009-12-15 Thread Cor

Hello All,

I have heard XW1 sat. with a fine signal.
I've used the folowing kepler data which Mineo Wakita earlier posted
in amsat-bb (please read the comment below!).
1 36121U 09072A 09349.15640464 -.0045 0-0 0+0 019
2 36121 100.5046 046.2483 0006436 232.0630 127.9902 13.1899568700
Keep in mind these keppler data are not accurate because I've heard
XW1 3 minutes longer compared to keppler XW1 LOS on my tracker screen!
Last signal (on my radio) heard at 22:24UTC in locator JO23XE.
Used equipment:
Transceiver: Yaesu FT897 with standard ceramic CW filter and 300Hz inrad filter.
Antenna: M2 436CP30 (45 deg. fixed elevation, I can not move up or down!).

An audio recording is to listen here:
http://iss.ontwikkel.nl/15Dec2009_XW1a_low.mp3

An amateur radio operator in Holland (Jan PDØSDO) also could hear the XW1 on
an little GP antenna (about 60cm length).

Congratulations to all who have worked on the XW1 sat!

[amsat-bb] XW-1 report over Europe

2009-12-15 Thread i8cvs
Hi All,

To day December 15 signals from the satellite XW-1 CW beacon during
Rev 9 changing into Rev 10 over Europe were very strong and clear with
only a beacon power of 65 mW into a satellite TX antenna RHCP with gain
of 3.0 dBic

The satellite from AOS at 20:12 UTC and LOS at 20:34 UTC was into
the eclipse (ECL) all the time.

My receiving condition was a 12 dBic RHCP 10 turns Helix antenna
with a low noise preamplifier antenna mounted NF=0.45 dB and Gain
G = 20 dB

I was using a 434-436 / 28-30 MHz downconverter in the shack connected
to a HF Drake receiver R4-C tuned to the 10 meters IF interposing in
between a 20 dB attenuator with 1 dB steps

The XW-1 beacon was very constant in signal strenght fading very slowly
changing between 20 dB to 15 dB over the noise floor in about 30 seconds
as measured with the 1 dB step attenuator connected into the 28-30 MHz IF
of my receiving system.

The same was experienced during the following Rev 10 changing into Rev 11
over Europe with AOS at 22:06 UTC and LOS at 22:18 UTC with the satellite
in Eclipse (ECL) all the time.

During the above orbit the Elevation from my QTH in JN70ES was only 8
degrees maximum over the free horizon with no obstructions in direction of
the see.

The following keplerian elements as given by Nigel G8IFF for object A are
extremely correct because I losted the signal over the free horizon just at
elevation of - 0.2 degrees as computed by InstantTrack

XW-1
1 36121U 09072A 09349.53641119 -.0045 0-0 0+0 031
2 36121 100.5050 046.6267 0007989 035.4736 324.6735 13.1639108550

That's all for now

I hope that very soon the linear transponder will be open for general use
and stay in SSB/CW as long as possible for the benefit of many users at the
same time.

This is really exciting, Michael! We're delighted that the FM
transponder is working. With such a big footprint it will be a
remarkable experience for newcomers and oldtimers alike.

For my part, my QTH in Maritime (Eastern) Canada will have a 3 deg.
elevation view to the XW-1 at the same time that Moscow, Russia has a
3 deg. elevation view. Imagine that FM to FM!

[amsat-bb] XW 1 CW Beacon Heard

2009-12-15 Thread Mani VU2WMY
Hi all,
The beacon was heard over India during 16:45 pass. The max elevation
was 54 Deg. The beacon was pretty strong and 5-6 VU stations copied
with no big set up. All the stations copied using "J" and "Slim Jims".

Sure, XW 1 is going to open up a new interest in satellite working and
truly an amazing "New Year Gift" from AMSAT-CHINA. Thank you guys for
that wonderful gift.

2009-12-15 Thread John Marranca, Jr
AWESOME!

We had an amazing 75 degree pass here...and not only could the CW beacon be
heard quite low on the horizon, but it exhibited very little fade. What's
even more exciting, is that looking ahead, XW-1 promises many TRANS-ATLANTIC
QSOs with Western Europe from the Northeast.

Thank you AMSAT China. Good job!

On the 1550 EDT Dec 15) pass i was able to copy from AOS TO LOS if it was not
the presence of 2 deep fades one of 15 seconds (making signal
going below my noise level) and the other near 30 seconds (making signal just
above the noise level) on a +-3 minutes cycle i cannot see
much difference from the before attitude change but it will have to be
reevaluated when the sat return back to his previous attitude.

Could be the SC polar orbiting sat? He was supposed to be launch around
December 24 UTC (23 EDT)? i just remember to have read something on

[amsat-bb] XW-1 Heard over VU

2009-12-15 Thread Nitin Muttin [VU3TYG]
All,

I heard the beacon of the XW1 during the 16:32 UTC pass on 15th
Dec.VU2BJZ,VU2WMY and VU2GUR also heard the CW beacon. The signals were good
right from AOS to LOS. The CW telemetry said that the beacon RF output power
was 123 mw and the beacon power supply was as 0.65 volts. I used the
telemetry decode application provided by the XW1 team.

Recording of the telemetry signal can be found at
http://vu3tyg.addr.com/XW1/XW1-Beacon.zip and the screen shot of the
decoding application showing the data at
http://vu3tyg.addr.com/XW1/xw-1data.GIF

Congratulations AMSAT China on the successful launch and all the very best
