Hi guys,
for the Techno Trend board, I suggest to contact Jean-Pierre F6DZP and have
a look at http://www.vivadatv.org/page.php?p=tutioune-en
for some hints.
You can also drop a line to Amsat-Italia Bod (c...@amsat.it), unfortunately
I'm currently on business trip and can't help you right now.

As Stefan said pay attention to the rotators:speed and accuracy may cause
unsuccess.

Hi Oscar,

Call?

Any of those should work fine, and you should include the Kenwood TS-2000 in
your search list. It is
still in production, and well thought of, though like nearly every other rig it
does have a few
quirks.

The FT-847 is still a great rig, and is usually snapped up whenever a good used
one becomes available.
The first batch had "write only" CAT control, with all of the following ones
having bidirectional
capability which is needed for modern control programs such as SatPC32. Many
of the first ones where
modified, but if you consider one, make certain it has the update.

Note that you can use two regular rigs together to form a satellite station.
Some people find a good
eBay or flea market rig as a second unit. Again, programs like SatPC32 will
work with this
combination and make it look like a single rig. For instance, our Dayton
Hamvention demo station uses
two FT-817s.

Hi,

I recently got interested in trying satellite communications. I bought an
Arrow antenna and I am

which transceiver to get. So far I have found the FT-847, IC-910h and IC-9100.

The FT-847 scares me since it is a bit old, however I have heard it is very
good for satellite and
EME.

 Any advice would be appreciated!!

Hello Oscar...If you want to spend a boat load of money then any of the new
radios on the market will due very nicely. However for probably less that $600
you can get two multi mode older 2M & 70cm radios. The IC 471A, IC 251A, TS700A
come to mind. They will not be computer controlled and you will have to use
that big knob for doppler and tracking. However they will do the job and you
will learn a lot.

2013-08-02 Thread Michael Farkas

Depends on what you plan on doing and how much money you want to spend. I
would suggest for portable operations getting a new or used name brand dual
band ht like the Yaesu VX-7R or maybe a VX-8R. Check the suppliers for close
outs and specials. I got my Yaesu VX-7R at real deal because they were clearing
them out for the newer model VX-8 something because they actually came out with
two new variants of the model. Keep in mind they work four bands. I'm starting
to hear some bad things about the new "cheap" models that are out that as with
I suggested staying Icom, Kenwood, Yaesu etc. I run both Elk and Arrow
antennas. For base operations do the same but look for reviews on the different
rigs. There are a ton of different ways to setup a home station. My rule of
thumb when shopping is doing what your doing now then check the suppliers for
deals, then look for used e-bay is a good source along with
Hamfests!73,sMike/N8GBU

which transceiver to get. So far I have found the FT-847, IC-910h and
IC-9100.

The FT-847 scares me since it is a bit old, however I have heard it is
very good for satellite and
EME.

Any advice would be appreciated!!

No problem Angelo. The point was not the quirks and deficiencies, which the
FT-847 and IC-910 have as
well, but at what point to go into the details. Sometimes the "data dump"
which we oldsters can
generate can be a bit much! :)

 Hi Oscar,

 Call?

Any of those should work fine, and you should include the Kenwood
 TS-2000
in your search list. It is
still in production, and well thought of, though like nearly every
 other
rig it does have a few
 quirks.

The FT-847 is still a great rig, and is usually snapped up whenever a
 good
 used one becomes available.
The first batch had "write only" CAT control, with all of the following
 ones having bidirectional
capability which is needed for modern control programs such as SatPC32.
Many of the first ones where
modified, but if you consider one, make certain it has the update.

Note that you can use two regular rigs together to form a satellite
station. Some people find a good
eBay or flea market rig as a second unit. Again, programs like SatPC32
 will work with this
combination and make it look like a single rig. For instance, our
 Dayton
 Hamvention demo station uses
 two FT-817s.

 Alan

If you don't live very close to a big city probably there are sparks
into one or more high voltage defective insulators carrying AC

there is a possibility that you have a nearby electrical transformer that
has a corroded connection on it, these connections can be a major source
of noise and they will come and go with changes in humidity or
precipitation. will it suddenly stop at times are is it a fairly constant
level?

your local utility company can find and repair these connections but they
need a better idea of the direction it is from your QTH.

Not that uncommon this time of the year!  Especially on 160-meters and
80/75-meters, slightly less on 40-meters, the QRN level can be pretty horrid!
Much of the noise is caused by lightning that can be hundreds of miles away.

Hi Dave,

If the noise came and went sharply (like someone turned something off
for a week), and "man made" sounding, perhaps one of your neighbors put
up a solar power array? Lots of diodes and the power inverter running

Just a thought,

[amsat-bb] Re: Newbie needs advice on which transceiver to get

2013-08-02 Thread Stefan Wagener
Now, keep in mind folks, Oscar bought an arrow antenna, not a cross yagi or
dish or whatever else including rotor. He has small portable antenna for
the great outdoors!

Hooking up an IC910, IC9100, FT847, TS2000 or whatever else which is
primary a stationary rig is overkill. He needs a good cross-band HT or one
of the mobile rigs. Also SatPC32 is not working on the balcony or in the
front yard unless he drags out the computer and the power cables and the
table and so on and on and on. He needs a handheld solution, software for a
mobile phone or tablet for his arrow not a stationary equipment list.

2 cents worth,

Hi Dave, N6CO

To find out from where the noise come out you need a MFJ-852 Meter A/C
Line Noise Meter visible in the following internet address:

It is currently used by the Electricity Companies in England.

 Hi Estefan,

Yes for the moment I have a portable yagi which I am going to use with my ht.
But I also want to try it out with a full size rig and a pc...I don't mind
taking out all that stuff to my deck in the back
:-). I live in a rented townhouse for now...once I get a home things will
become more permanent.

I did get pocketsat for my iPad, excellent program.

[amsat-bb] Re: Newbie needs advice on which transceiver to get

2013-08-02 Thread Clayton Coleman
To each his own.

I have worked 100's of passes from the road with an Icom 910 and an Arrow
in the past year. I find it the cleaner solution albeit a bit more
expensive than two all mode radios. It's not exactly handheld but with
the carry handle I can easily move it from its foam carry box to the roof
or trunk lid.

Every time I try to go with a two radio solution (typically a Yaesu FT-817
and FT-100/857) for portable Arrow work, I'm drawn back to a single radio
solution for simplicity. If I'm packing light and the IC-910 is ruled
out, a single FT-817 does the trick.

As we all draw from our personal experiences when making recommendations, I
will suggest :

Yaesu FT-817 for the traveler, adventurer, and experimenter.

Icom IC-910 for the person willing to take a shack-sized rig outdoors on
occasion.

Both are paired well with an Arrow. The nice thing about starting with an
FT-817 is the ability to travel with a small wire dipole to play HF. In my
satellite bag I normally carry a 20m end fed wire to kill time between
passes.

I sympathise with the original poster and have exactly the same problem;
20dB over S9, or worse, up to 21MHz.

My initial though was likewise that our 3KW solar system was the cause
and although it does add to the noise, switching it off barely makes a
difference. Our mains powered LED lighting also adds a little to the
noise, most noticeable at around 7MHz.

We live in a small town in the middle of nowhere and our closest
neighbours are 500 metres away. So that only leaves the overhead street
electricity cables and or the high tension cables that lead to the
switching yard some 2km from our house. We have underground cables from
the street to the house.

Whatever the cause, HF operation is out of the question at the moment.
If I can muster some enthusiasm I might investigate a loop aerial.

Can you hear it on the AM broadcast band?

If so use the ferrite rod antenna to get directions of it and have
yourself a fox hunt.

there is a possibility that you have a nearby electrical transformer
that has a corroded connection on it, these connections can be a
major source of noise and they will come and go with changes in
humidity or precipitation. will it suddenly stop at times are is it
a fairly constant level?

your local utility company can find and repair these connections but
they need a better idea of the direction it is from your QTH.

Those are my thoughts on your problem
