[amsat-bb] Add YOUR Name to an Asteroid Mission!
Get this to every teacher you know! After entering your name, you can print out a "participation certificate." NASA Invites Public to Send Names on an Asteroid Mission and Beyond NASA is inviting people around the world to submit their names to be etched on a microchip aboard a spacecraft headed to the asteroid Bennu in 2016. The "Messages to Bennu!" microchip will travel to the asteroid aboard the agency's Origins-Spectral Interpretation Resource Identification Security Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) spacecraft. The robotic mission will spend more than two years at the 1,760-foot (500-meter)-wide asteroid. The spacecraft will collect a sample of Bennu's surface and return it to Earth in a sample return capsule. "We're thrilled to be able to share the OSIRIS-REx adventure with people across the Earth, to Bennu and back," said Dante Lauretta, principal investigator of the OSIRIS-REx mission from the University of Arizona in Tucson. "It's a great opportunity for people to get engaged with the mission early and join us as we prepare for launch." Those wishing to participate in "Messages to Bennu!" should submit their name online no later than Sept. 30 at: http://planetary.org/bennu After a person submits their name, they will be able to download and print a certificate documenting their participation in the OSIRIS-REx mission. "You'll be part of humankind's exploration of the solar system --How cool is that?" said Bill Nye, chief executive officer of The Planetary Society, the organization collecting and processing the entries. Participants who "follow" or "like" the mission on Facebook will receive updates on the location of their name in space from launch time until the asteroid samples return to Earth in 2023. Facebook fans also will be kept apprised of mission progress and late-breaking news through regular status updates. The OSIRIS-REx mission goal is to address basic questions about the composition of the very early solar system, the source of organic materials and water that made life possible on Earth, and to better predict the orbits of asteroids that represent collision threats to the Earth. It will collect a minimum of 2 ounces (60 grams) of surface material. Once the sample return capsule deploys, the spacecraft will be placed into a long-term solar orbit around the sun, along with the microchip and every name on it. "It is exciting to consider the possibility that some of the people who register to send their names to Bennu could one day be a part of the team that analyzes the samples from the asteroid 10 years from now," said Jason Dworkin, mission project scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md. This mission will assist the agency in its efforts to identify the population of potentially hazardous near-Earth objects, as well as those suitable for asteroid exploration missions. The asteroid initiative brings together the best of NASA's science, technology and human exploration efforts to achieve President Obama's goal of sending humans to an asteroid by 2025. NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., will provide overall mission management, systems engineering, and safety and mission assurance for OSIRIS-REx. Lockheed Martin Space Systems in Denver will build the spacecraft. OSIRIS-REx is the third mission in NASA's New Frontiers Program. NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., manages New Frontiers for the agency's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. [amsat-bb] Re: W1AW/2
FYI regarding QSLs: "QSL cards from W1ØØAW and W1AW operating portable will be sent automatically via the QSL Bureau system to each U.S.A. station who signs-up online to receive such cards [this form is not ready yet -- please watch for an announcement]. This is a one-time only use of the QSL Bureau for this purpose. QSLs will automatically be sent to stations outside the U.S.A. via the QSL Bureau as normal. QSLs may be requested directly also, with an SASE required for return." Glad to hear of several operations on the satellites. I look forward to working as many as possible on the satellites (as well as HF, though I've missed the first few). I also look forward to operating as W1AW/3 from the District of Columbia in July. 73, Paul Stoetzer, N8HM Washington, DC On Wed, Jan 15, 2014 at 12:39 PM, Rolf Krogstad wrote: > Great to see other W1AW portable operations planned for the satellites. > > I will be operating as W1AW/0 from EN34 in Minnesota the following week, > January 29 through Feb. 4th. > Note that those dates are from UTC through 2350 UTC. > > All QSL requests for the W!AW portable operations should go to ARRL > Headquarters. > > 73 > Rolf NR0T > Grid EN34it > > > > > On Wed, Jan 15, 2014 at 9:36 AM, W2JV wrote: > >> Hello, >> >> I will be active on all the amateur satellites from 1/22- 1/28 as W1AW/2. >> >> W1AW Portable Operations, ARRL Centennial QSO Party >> >> The ARRL Centennial "W1AW WAS" operations are taking place throughout 2014 >> from each of the 50 states, relocating each Wednesday (UTC) to a new pair >> of states (this week, Nebraska and Delaware. Great to see other W1AW portable operations planned for the satellites. I will be operating as W1AW/0 from EN34 in Minnesota the following week, January 29 through Feb. 4th. Note that those dates are from UTC through 2350 UTC. All QSL requests for the W!AW portable operations should go to ARRL Headquarters. 73 Rolf NR0T Grid EN34it On Wed, Jan 15, 2014 at 9:36 AM, W2JV wrote: > Hello, > > I will be active on all the amateur satellites from 1/22- 1/28 as W1AW/2. > > W1AW Portable Operations, ARRL Centennial QSO Party > > The ARRL Centennial "W1AW WAS" operations are taking place throughout 2014 > from each of the 50 states, relocating each Wednesday (UTC) to a new pair > of states (this week, Nebraska and Delaware. Hello, I will be active on all the amateur satellites from 1/22- 1/28 as W1AW/2. W1AW Portable Operations, ARRL Centennial QSO Party The ARRL Centennial "W1AW WAS" operations are taking place throughout 2014 from each of the 50 states, relocating each Wednesday (UTC) to a new pair of states (this week, Nebraska and Delaware. Listen for W1AW/0 and W1AW/3). [amsat-bb] Re: APRS packet using Kenwood TS2000 and UISS software
Hi again Rupesh, > we are not able to receive data on the software screen. whenever > we have a pass of ISS some signals are detected and a receiving > led glows even in squelch on. I forgot to mention this in my previous e-mail. If you have your packet station working in both directions, transmit and receive, with terrestrial signals then you will have better luck with signals from space. I use the APRS beacon frequency 144.390 MHz for testing my packet configuration on receive. I live near a large city (Chicago) so this frequency always has plenty of strong signals. That way I do not have to wait 90 minutes or longer for the next ISS pass. The APRS beacons and local digipeaters have strong signals so that ensures that I am receiving packets with a good checksum (to overcome the software TNC's somewhat rigorous demand for checksums) at which point I can read the messages on UISS, UZ7HO, UI-View, or hardware TNC, etc. I then QSY back 145.825 for ISS packet operating. Also, try receiving the digital telemetry beacon from FUNcube-1, AO-73. The BPSK downlink is on 145.935 MHz. You will need to set the TS-2000 to receive USB instead of FM (and tune for Doppler). The FUNcube Dashboard software for receiving and decoding the BPSK signal can be downloaded from funcube.org.uk. I get good signals with just a 3-element 2 meter beam with fixed elevation and turned with a TV antenna rotor. -- 73 de JoAnne K9JKM k9...@amsat.org Editor, AMSAT Journal ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] Re: APRS packet using Kenwood TS2000 and UISS software
Hello Rupesh, > Even though we try to digipeat and data is transmitted, we > are not able to receive data on the software screen. whenever > we have a pass of ISS some signals are detected and a receiving > led glows even in squelch on. The new ARISS web pages at http://www.ariss.org are one place to find more information. Select the 'Contact the ISS' link in the top row. This brings you to a page which describes all of the ARISS amateur radio modes. There is a section on this page titled "Packet Operations". AGWPE only passes the packets that have the correct checksum. Otherwise you will not see the packet displayed via UISS even though it sounds like a good signal. I am not at all familiar with the operation of the TS-2000 internal modem. If it operates in a mode similar to other TNC-2 configurations you might be able to see non-checksum-computed packets using the TNC's PASSALL command. In this configuration you would not be using AGWPE. Packets received with PASSALL = ON contain the good characters and erroneous characters - but it is often good enough for humans to understand the content. Both types of packet operation, hardware TNC and soundcard modem, are discussed in a link in the ARISS.org's packet operations section. The only amateur radio presently in operation on the ISS is the Ericsson HT. The 5 watt downlink and shadowing from the spacecraft structure (depending on the orientation of the ISS) leads to varying signal strengths at the ground station. A real-time packet log of the 145.825 ARISS signals that have been satgated displays at http://www.ariss.net which is a different page from the ariss.org page I mentioned. If there are no satgate stations near you in India then this may not show much except to gauge prior packet activity on orbits approaching your QTH. Hope this helps some ... -- 73 de JoAnne K9JKM k9...@amsat.org Editor, AMSAT Journal ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. Not an AMSAT-NA member?
