[amsat-bb] Re: Hamlib for Windows and COM ports question (re: Gpredict)

2011-03-18 Thread Alexandru Csete
Hi Mark,

I have not used hamlib in a long time since I now have others to test
rig interfaces in gpredict. When I used it few years ago on windows it
worked well with high COM-port values. I always used USB to serial
converters, which get high values.

I would suggest you try the hamlib mailing list since this is where
hamlib users and developers hang out:
https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/hamlib-developer

When you start rigtcl, you can try to pass the option -vv which
will enable debug messages. This may reveal what is wrong.

Otherwise, I have to say that I am puzzled by the fact that some
people use Gpredict on windows to control radios. I didn't know it was
possible because the hamlib network daemon (which is required by
gpredict) is not available in the windows packages - at least I have
never seen it.

hangs with no errors and it's obviously not working either.  I am
aware of the baud rate command line option, but that's not it...from
what I've read it gives the impression (but isn't clearly stated) that
it might not support above COM2.   Surely that can be fixed (heh...not

Gpredict for Windows is very nice and a super program, but if I can't
use ports higher than COM2 because of hamlib, it's use in my shack is
 very limited...

references claiming it is DBPSK. Can someone clarify if it is
Differential BPSK, or just plain old BPSK as used before, but at 1000
 BPS, rather than 400 ?

Reason for asking is that I have a USRP, and use gnuradio, along with
the gnuradio-companion. That has DBPSK blocks built in, but pure BPSK
would take a little more work (possibly just routing the output to a
loopback soundcard, and then running decoding software)

Hi Iain,

It is differentially encoded. You can find the specification on Phil

Spaceflight Services Announces Lunar and GTO Mission Pricing

Prague, CZ - September 30, 2010:  Spaceflight Services (Spaceflight) announced
today pricing for small payloads to Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO) and
 Low Lunar Orbit (LLO).

Spaceflight, as part of the Rocket City Space Pioneer Google Lunar X-Prize
Team, is responsible for mission integration and providing space
transportation services to Low Lunar Orbit.  Spaceflight is providing flight
opportunities for ESPA class spacecraft (spacecraft weighing less than 180 kg)
interested in launch services to GTO and Low Lunar Orbit.

The proposed mission, which is slated for Q4 2013 or Q1 2014, will deploy
three ESPA payloads into a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit and two additional
payloads in a Low Lunar Orbit.  The mission is also open to smaller spacecraft
looking for a low cost ride to either of these destinations.

Mission pricing for small payloads to GTO begins at $795,000 for a 3U CubeSat
and up to $13,950,000 for a full ESPA spacecraft.

This is considered a Low Cost Ride in the commercial world. This is the free
market value of the launch that we are hoping to get for significantly less.
 Wish us luck...

I certainly wish the best of luck with finding a cheap ride!
Aside from being GTO, I do not consider their offer to be a good deal
at all, since:
(1) Their prices are set so that they can finance their own lunar mission
(2) The price for a whole Falcon 1 is $11M, which will take 1 metric ton to LEO.
(3) Even for a Falcon 9, the price seems to be less than $10M for
1,600 kg to GTO, see
http://www.spacex.com/falcon9.php#pricing_and_performance

I have recorded the simulation to a video and you can watch it on
Youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ET8BhbqmVk

I couldn't find any 3d model of AO-51 so I used a model of AO-7 - sorry

data for Celestia so the time and may not be scientifically accurate.

If you want to run the simulation for yourself, watch from other
angles, etc., you can get Celestia for free from
http://shatters.net/celestia/
You'll need to add the data files for AO-51 in the extras folder;
you can use mine to begin with. There is a .zip file here:

You'll also find the H.264 encoded video there that you are free to

 Hi AMSATs,

I just read the message about the tube-sats.
I was having a look to their options, but when I understand well in
the structure there is already a radio integrated ?

Hi William,

You can get a tubesat both with or without electronics/radio. I think
you can even use your own structure as long as it fits into the
envelope specs.

What is the area that can be used for electronics ?
The weight is max. 250 grams, which is no problem to handle one off
my LE005-R2 linear transponders (weights only 30 grams).
 Check it on: www.leijenaarelectronics.nl

Max OD = 8.94 cm (3.52 in), ID= 8.56 cm (3.37 in), Length = 12.7 cm (5.0 in)
So it is slightly smaller than a cubesat in one dimension, but longer
in length.
You can get the full specs on their website:
http://www.interorbital.com/TubeSat_1.htm
There is a PDF/word file

When there is enough space in the tube-sat to fit my transponder,
 this is very interresting.
Just fill the existing space with Li-ion batts and there you go...

Indeed!

Anyone already have experience with these tube-sats ?

I do not have any practical experience with them, but I know they have
been working on their launcher for many years. If I had 8000$ I would
buy a tubesat.
Of course, since their launcher does not have any track record, it
should be considered as high risk. But who cares? I mean if you
compare it to the price of a cubesat launch today, which is how much?
8$?

The influence of the drag force also depends on the mass since F=m*a,
so the same drag force will cause less deceleration on a heavier
satellite. You have to put this together with F=pressure*surface_area

By the way, is there any significant atmospheric drag at 1200 km

You should be aware that the FT-817 frequency can not be controlled

On the other hand, you can change the frequency using the dial. The

Yes, I think they are very much for real! Interorbital Systems are
also part of team SYNERGY MOON, a fully registered team in the Google
Lunar X PRIZE.

I can only see a price of $8k (not 4k). Still a bargain compared to
the price of a cubesat launch today (~$80k I think). The 8k includes
all necessary avionics even a radio. Note that the tubesats are placed
in an orbit where they will decay within a few weeks. Therefore, long
term missions would require some propulsion to bring the tubesat into
a higher and stable orbit. Some cubesat builders are already
experimenting with micro-propulsion systems for cubesats.

I checked to make sure it wasn't April first.  As Bruce said, if
this is for real, the question should be not putting a linear
transponder on it, but how many!  For 4K a few of use could pool our
 Visa cards!

The first team that puts a linear transponder on board one of these,
wins! (And I want William Leijenaar PE1RAH on my team ...)

Seriously, if this is for real, I think AMSAT should get at the front
of the train and provide hardware, or hardware design, for those who
 plan to use it.

[amsat-bb] Re: Pass predictions and differences in software

2009-07-13 Thread Alexandru Csete
Hi LeRoy,

Which version of gpredict are you using? The one that is included with
Ubuntu? That version is very much out of date and did have several bugs
that could affect pass predictions. In particular the time controller
function was very immature back then.

Did you try the predict pass functions instead of advancing the clock
(i.e. right click on a satellite)?

 Good afternoon

I am running gpredict on an ubuntu linux box - I am looking at the
 SO50 satellite -

It is currently 1412 (1812utc) - I advanced the clock of the software
forward by about 3 hrs (1712 local) and see what looks like a great
 pass on screen

I went to verify using the webbased prediction on the amsat website,
and. Don't see anything in the list of passes even close to what
gpredict says will happen in the future

I updated the keps thinking maybe they were out day, and got the same
 results

I then fired up my winXP machine and SatPC32 - and got results that
are closer to what the amsat site says.

When looking at real time, all three show the SO50 in just about the
 same spot

I think I believe the amsat site and satPC32 software.

Not sure of the question to this post - wondering more or less what
factors effect how the pass predictions work. When they (or at least
the two I have control over) have updated keps shouldn't they give
the same information or realitivly close - as I look at the two
programs running side by side I do see slight differences in where
SO50 is located on the map currently. But it is only slight and may
have more to do with the scale of the display maps and not the
 software.

If I advance the time thou I don't get the same results. And this
 confuses me

 Thanks,

Both videos work for me. The first one is even higher quality than the
second. Thanks for posting.
