[amsat-bb] Re: Keps (MacDoppler)

2014-05-08 Thread Bill Howell
Dino,

Look at the kepler.dat file in the Finder.
It resides in the MacDoppler data folder.

You can look at the modified date in the Finder, or open the file in
TextEdit...
the date should show at the top of the opened document.

The above instructions are for MacDopplerPro_X2.9.3.
If you are using a different version, you could possibly find the kepler.dat
file in another location.

[amsat-bb] Anyone using a Fox-Delta ST-1 (USB) with MacDoppler?

2012-04-30 Thread Bill Howell
I'm thinking of retiring my Endeavour rotor control interface for something
newer.
Is anyone using a Fox-Delta ST-1 (USB) with MacDoppler on an iMac?

I know that MacDoppler and the ST-1 are supposed to support the EasyCom
protocol,
but I'd like to know if anyone out there is actually using this combination.

thanks,

Sand it to shiny copper and lay on some paste flux.
Even then, you'll need a lot of heat. Make sure the solder flows on,
and not just globs on.
I have not built a Moxon but I have dealt with soldering heavy wire.
Let us know how they work out for you, after they're up.

[amsat-bb] Re: LOTW format

2011-01-12 Thread Bill Howell
Pete, as I understand it, there are two important lines in the .adi file
which must be included for LOTW to recognize it as a sat contact...
examples are shown below:
Propagation Mode: PROP_MODE:3SAT

Satellite Name: SAT_NAME:4AO-7

I've found that some logging software does _not_ have these two items
available as fill in boxes,
although I believe you can edit the .adi file manually to add these
lines.
See the link below for all the details.
I hope I read your question correctly and this will be helpful to you.

[amsat-bb] Re: M-Squared Eggbeater woes

2010-12-17 Thread Bill Howell
George,

I re-read your email and realized you were asking how the *fiberglass
rod* connects to the balun case.
The manual shows the balun case/support rod as one item, so I don't
know how the rod is secured.
My guess is that it's a force-fit into the delrin ring at the top of
the balun.
I can send you a scan of the manual, or some pictures of my eggbeater
if that would help.

The loops are secured with Allen screws at their bottom. They take a
3/32 Allen wrench to tighten them (I just checked
this on my Eggbeater).
You might want to make sure there's no ice in the hex hole, or the
wrench won't get a good bite.
Let me know if you need a copy of the manual and I'll email it.

[amsat-bb] Re: SO-67

2009-11-15 Thread Bill Howell
Jerry,

I don't have an FT-60, I have an FT-50 and use what the owners manual
calls VFO Duplex Mode.
This allows one VFO to be on the xmit frequency and the other VFO to
be on the receive frequency.
I looked at the online owners manual for your FT-60 and did not see
the VFO Duplex option mentioned,
so you might want to set up memories for SO-67.
Here is a link to K6LCS's page showing how he set memories for AO-51
on an FT-60:
http://homepage.mac.com/clintbradford/.Public/satbr3.pdf
Note that the freqs/tone shown for AO-51 are not correct for SO-67.
You will have to plug in the correct frequencies yourself (don't
forget the tone).
Note that there are a number of freqs plugged into the memory
locations to allow for Doppler.
All that being said, I have not actually attempted operation through
SO-67 (just listened). I just thought the information here might help
get you started.

[amsat-bb] Re: rotator questions

2009-08-12 Thread Bill Howell
Joseph,
Check out this page:
http://www.thecompassstore.com/decvar.html#
There's a link on that page to plug in your Zip code and figure
declination, or
you can use the handy map on the main page.
For Austin, the magic number is 4 degrees.

If I recall correctly (it's been a few years), I set the rotor
control box to North, went up on the roof and rotated the *mast*
until the ants pointed to magnetic north (using a compass). Note that
the compass will read inaccurately if held near a metal mast.
Then I rotated the mast a bit more so the ants were pointing about 4
degrees *West of magnetic North*.

That's the way I remember doing it.

experience; my rig consists of a TH-F6A (handheld, not full-duplex)
 and an

AO-51, but I have been unsuccessful at making a contact. I went
 out to
field day (in Oviedo Florida) and was able to check out the rig the

 internals
and what definition of North that is used.

I'm familiar with the IGRF (from my day job as a GIS guy) and was
 wondering
if any of these apps use the IGRF for calculating magnetic
 declination:
 http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/IAGA/vmod/igrf.html

I've thought about creating my own rotator and started wondering
 about the
configuration used. When you buy a rotator and put it out in the
 yard, i'm
guessing you have to orient the base 'correctly'. How is the base
 of a
rotator usually aligned? Do you get a compass out and use local
 magnetic
north (without compensating for the declination from the IGRF).

I'm still in learning mode and very new to the world of sat, so if
 these are
 really dumb questions, my apologies!

I am open to any reading materials you can suggest on the matter.

[amsat-bb] Re: controller and Rotator help

2009-07-04 Thread Bill Howell
Myles,

My antennas/rotor are disassembled right now, as we are trying to
sell the house.
When it was all together, I used an older version of MacDoppler Pro,
a Mac G4 tower with a serial card,
and an Endeavour Auto Tracker ( http://endeavour-usa.com/
autotracker.htm ) driving a Yaesu 5400 rotor.
The system worked FB.

Had I to do it over, I might not choose the Endeavour interface unit.
It requires a serial port
on the Mac, and I'm not sure if a serial-to USB converter would work
right with it
(an Imac, for instance, has no provision for a serial card).

MacDoppler is an excellent program with great support.
The 5400 was purchased used and has been up on my roof for a number
of years with no problems.

A friend of mine (who may not subscribe to this list) is using a Mac,
MacDoppler and a Yaesu 5400.
I will email him and see what he is using for an interface unit (I
think his Mac is USB-only), and let you know.

 rotor reliability.

My first thoughts were towards a Yaesu 5500 and maybe the

I read a few reviews but not much was out there in general but

 Anyone using the PrimeTec?

What are you using as a controller? would appreciate any

My biggest concern really is the Rotator. I am in a situation such
that after installation, getting back to the roof for repairs
would be rather difficult. So i am trying to identify the 'best'
 small/moderate sized rotator (az/el) as possible /practical.

Will be turning a small M2 2m and 440 circular pol beam

Not really sure how reliable the 5500 is for long term use. so
if there was a 'better' more reliable and or longer lasting rotor
out there i'd strongly consider it

The only thing I thought of as a alternative was the AlphaSpid but
comparing reviews I seem to come out about the same between it and
the 5500 -hoping some real world responses might help me break the
