[amsat-bb] Re: AMSAT Journal No Joy in EM63
This is what I received when I notified Martha that I had received my Journal with the correct address and someone else's name. "With new mailing regulations, our mailer had to update their software. .The glitch was due to this change in software. We have been assured that all current members will receive a Journal - unfortunately with the wrong name. This will be fixed by the next issue of the Journal." You might want to drop a note to Martha and inform her that you did not receive your Journal. The problem may be larger than she knows. 73 Glenn WB4UIV At 04:18 PM 9/6/2013, Les Rayburn wrote: I too did not receive the latest issue of the AMSAT Journal as of yet. [amsat-bb] Re: 2 Meter TV Interference
This is probably front end overload on a TV without a front end. Can you spell SDR? The TV may now be using this technology. A digital TV MUST receive all of the packets to display a useable picture. If it looses enough packets, it will not decode anything. You probably cannot fix the problem with this TV. 73 Glenn WB4UIV At 10:17 PM 12/6/2011, Wyatt Dirks wrote: Just recently I have been having troubles with a neighbor while I am working the FM satellites(SO-50 and AO-27). The setup I am currently using is my mobile setup because I am unable to put a base station up for many reasons. I am using a FT8900 with 50 watts out into a 1/4 wave or 1/2 Larson mobile antenna. The 1/4 wave is mounted permanently via a hole in the roof of my truck an the 1/2 wave is mounted on a mount opposite the factory installed FM/AM radio whip. It doesn't seem to matter what antenna I use for the problem to occur. Then I use either the arrow antenna or my cju for the downlink. The problem occurs while I am transmitting. The neighbor says that his tv receives the interference in that the picture is disturbed and sometimes cuts out completely. He is getting his tv from hdtv over the air. He has an antenna in the attic that goes to a powered splitter which then goes to several tvs. That is about all i know on his setup but I do know that if he cuts the power to the splitter he receives nothing. Also the problem seems to be on every channel. Today I had another local ham over at the request of the neighbor and his mobile Kenwood radio did the same thing to the neighbors tv when he transmitted on 2 meter with 50 watts out. He also recommended that they get a filter. I did not see the specs on the filter nor do I know what bandwidth it was for. If anyone has any ideas on what would solve this problem and could share that would be great. Catch you on the birds Wyatt AC0RA ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] Re: In-flight iPhone snaps Space Shuttle launch
The rules are in effect to prevent possible interference to the aircraft navigation aids and communications equipment. The potential for mix produces from numerous consumer grade electronic devices emitting part 15 compliant RF is just to unpredictable for the FAA to allow these possible RF sources to be energized during the landing and take off phase of flight. If the interference were to occur at a higher flight level, the pilot has longer to respond and get the interfering emitter shut down. During landing and take off the reaction time is just too long to allow the devices to be turned on. It is not a matter of general EMI. It is a matter of mix products from unknown emitters causing on channel interference to sensitive receivers. 73 Glenn WB4UIV ARRL Technical Specialist At 01:28 PM 5/21/2011, Art McBride wrote: >So what happens to this airplane when it flies near a FM or TV broadcast >station? [amsat-bb] Re: The Need for Phonetics
I have to agree!! The phonetics in the phonetic alphabet were chosen for a reason. They are very hard to confuse with another letter. Fancy phonetics have no place in communications that you want understood. If you want to get a call sign correct use the standard phonetic alphabet. That way everyone is playing by the same play sheet. If you like to be misunderstood, continue to use your non standard confusing phonetics and you will get your wish. 73 Glenn WB4UIV At 12:14 PM 4/10/2011, Mark Spencer wrote: >The use of Kilowatt as a phonetic is a pet peeve of mine especially >where there >is a brief pause between kilo and watt. [amsat-bb] Re: LVB tracker issue
Joe It is probable that the surge got deeper into the the tracker and damaged other components. Lightning has a habit of doing major damage and also stressing other parts. It is probable that the control device has experienced EMP damage that causes it to do strange things. I learned my lesson many years ago when trying to be the hero and fixing some lightning damaged gear. I got everything working, and a week later the equipment was back for additional repairs. Then the next week it was back again. The fix was to replace the equipment or replace all of the solid state devices. Just replacing what is bad today will get the equipment back up for a while, but, it will probably fail again, at an inopportune time. Lightning just stresses the devices too much. 73 Glenn WB4UIV At 07:22 AM 9/6/2010, joe barkley wrote: >I had the USB port on my LVB go out after a voltage surge that >took out my computer. [amsat-bb] Re: Transit Satellites
It is my understanding that the transit system is inactive. This was a Navy navigation system that used the approx 150 MHz and 400 MHZ signals for determination of location. I used this system while active duty in the USN submarine service. I listened to the 149.985 MHz signal at home for many years, but, have not heard it for at least 10 years. The birds were known as OSCAR (for operational) by the Navy. Here are some links to some information indicating that at least one bird was transmitting in 1996. http://space.skyrocket.de/index_frame.htm?http://space.skyrocket.de/doc_sdat/transit-o.htm http://sd-www.jhuapl.edu/Transit/ http://techdigest.jhuapl.edu/td/td1901/index.htm If you do hear a Transit satellite, and the satellite is operating properly, you will hear a data burst, known as a Barker word. This data burst occurs at every even 2 minute mark. It can be used as an accurate time hack. The assumption was that the unit using the system would have time that was at least accurate to a minute and this could be used as a time hack. Hope this helps 73 Glenn WB4UIV At 06:49 PM 8/30/2010, Dave Marthouse wrote: >With all this talk of the Transit satellites on 149.985MHZ, how are >they listed in the keps. If you like throwing money at the problem, try Pasternack. 5 feet at $83.00 at S. M. Electronics. 5 feet at $78.25 at Pasternack. I always build my own.
