However, the keps they are using appear to be incorrect. They are

altitude of 317 km. Interestingly, the map view of the satellite's
current position appears to be correct.

SATVIEW's decay predictions seem to be based on the 317 km current
altitude and show a predicted reentry of August 5th.

I think SATVIEW's prediction is more accurate. Anyone else have any

 is which?

Doesn’t much matter when they are released, they still are all in the same
orbit more or less for quite a while. Even if the springs release them at
1/2 meter per second, they are all going at 7000 meters per second so it
takes days for them to separate very much.

Let’s see, at ½ meter per second separation, then they are 100’ apart
after the first minute, 1 mile after the first hour. And not until they
are a few miles apart can NORAD distinguish them enough to start getting
good tracks on them. By then it is impossible to know which is which.
Hence the guessing game until each owner decides which object best fits his
 downlink experience.

Continuing on, they will be 24 miles apart after the first day where they
will be about 5 seconds apart when tracked from the ground. After a week,
then maybe 175 miles and ½ minute apart. After a month, maybe 750 miles
and 2 minutes apart. After a year, maybe 9000 miles and 30 minutes apart.
And finally, after about a year and a half, they will be half an orbit or
about 45 minutes apart, beyond which, they start getting closer again…

Something like that unless I screwed up…

close. I also live at 1* magnetic declination, not much so I don't worry
much about that. Now I don't do much EME as I don't have any power, but
I've monitored EME and this seems to get me pretty close. I will also be

2013-04-23 Thread John Fickes

Steve,N9IP gave a very good tutorial on how to set up. The one thing
that he said that took me a while to figure out was to make sure you get a
nice clean path to adjust your uplink. You see we are coming to the time of
year that the tree's are filling up with water and if your pointing at a
satellite through the tree's your down link might sound distorted to you,
but be just fine to every one else. So if you can, try to get as clean of a
path as you can to adjust. This is more noticeable on SSB birds than it is
on the FM birds.

Rig is controlled by SATPC32 via the CI-V interface at 9600 baud.

On SO-50, I have no problems with doppler correction as you would suspect.
With the other birds, doppler is sometimes an issue. Sometimes I hear
stations strongly but when I call them, I don't hear my own uplink and the
other station obviously doesn't hear me either.

On other passes, the difference is not so great, and I'll hear my own
uplink, though usually slightly off frequency.

I know its possible to adjust the uplink frequency in the software, and
I've tried it during passes without much success. The translated help file

 assistance to me so far.

Can someone on the list point me towards a better explanation on the web,

[amsat-bb] Arrow and ELK Comparative Antenna Tests

2011-04-25 Thread JOHN FICKES
Gentlemen

Great work, very informative. As I read the article I wondered to myself
how my homebrew portable satellite antenna would stack up ? The Tape Measure
Beam. I don't expect any results, as one could spend a lifetime analyzing
everyone's homebrew antennas. But topics like this it just goes to show that
there are many many options and some at little expense to get on the birds.

   Great Job 73 KCØBMF John
