Re: [amsat-bb] Obtaining G/T of the satellite Ground Station.
One way to measure the g/t is to use sun noise. You point your antenna toward the sun and cold sky and measure the delta noise. Use that attached ss to calculate the g/t . I have a similar system and let compare notes. [amsat-bb] Re: UHF antenna radiation pattern measurement
Fantastic idea please keep us informed on your progress nick -Original Message- From: amsat-bb-boun...@amsat.org [mailto:amsat-bb-boun...@amsat.org] On Behalf Of Ryan Caron Sent: Wednesday, May 14, 2014 1:52 PM To: amsat-bb@amsat.org Subject: [amsat-bb] UHF antenna radiation pattern measurement All, My students and I are working on a way to rapidly measure the radiation pattern of various UHF antennas. We are using a pair of RFM22s - the transmitter sends magnetometer (azimuth) and accelerometer (elevation) data from a LSM303 along with its output power level. The receiving RFM22 appends the received signal strength value. From there what we want to do is real time plotting on a net book. 2D seems readily achievable through either LabView's polar plots or a number of different Python plotting libraries. However what we'd really like to do is real-time 3D plotting, but we don't know the right toolchain or libraries. We know we can do it in Matlab, but that won't be in real time. Are we on the right track? Has this been done before? Should we settle for a pair of 2D plots, or can real time 3D be done? Is there interest in the community for something like this? If it is, that would place different requirements on us (economical, easy to duplicate, good documentation, open software, etc). 73, NX1U ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. For example, an effort to get the rotor controller resulted in moving about four truckloads worth of gear. We're using an FT-847 for our primary radio, and a Kenpro G-5400 for our rotor system. We've interfaced the G-5400 to the computer using an Arduino. It works rather well with GPredict. The final bug in the system has to do with GPredict talking to the '847, but that should be easily fixed with an update. The antennas are on the roof of our Engineering and Computer Science building, about 20 feet off the roof, 70 feet above ground. Out of luck, we had a GlenMartin RT-936 and the associated non-penetrating mount just hanging out in our closet. Carrying the 50 cinder blocks up to the roof for that mount was not fun though. Coax wise, we have about 20 feet of Davis Bury-flex for our initial run, which then feeds some very nice ARR preamps. The final 200 foot run of coax to the shack is 1/2 Heliax. There are a few jumpers here in the shack too. I was able to make a few contacts through SO-50 today, and plan to be more active. It happened to be set for 145.825mHZ in FM. A few minutes ago the squelch was broken by what sounded like 1200BPS AFSK. It almost sounded like the old UOSATS. Checking my satellite tracking program I determined it wasn't CAPE-2, TRITON-1 or DELFIN3XT. What birds are up now that have downlinks on or around 145.825mHZ fm? Hi all 5.1 v is essentially the battery voltage on our li cells which is very bad news. We believe our charging scheme has failed and cooked our batteries. We now think we have no battery capacity . Nice data from CAPE-2. Curious about the unregulated bus voltage around 5.2V. Doesn't seem to fit with a single or double Li poly cell. However, if it's the output from 2 series solar cells, that might indicate the batteries are fully charged and we are seeing the max power point tracker backing off because nothing needs current. (hence the high voltage) All speculation. Sadly I need to be a few hundred miles further south to get a decent elevation. Thanks for the very interesting site. Really ! :-) http://f5yg.pagesperso-orange.fr/forum/CAPE-2_orb204_03dec2013.mp3 The signal to noise ratio is not too good because I'm using an old AM/FM scanner from the 80s heterodyned by my medium wave homebrew transmitter fitted with a 456.9 Xtal. Tnx David for the report If you have a TNC we would like to get the AX.25 data. If you like we have ground station software. Do you have any idea how strong s-4 is in mv or dmb? I've just loaded the latest set of keps for CAPE 2 and have managed to receive a signal at the first attempt from the right direction / frequency and time. The pass was at 12.30UTC when the satellite was within range of London. I was listening in USB to try and detect weak signals. However, not necessary as the signal was quite good (about 'S4') CW at 12.32. Frequency pulling as the CW was keying. best freq 145.823 Then at 12.36 some stronger FM. (shame I was still in USB) Best frequency 145.822 (SSB) As I'm at 51 degrees North the highest pass I see is about 17 degrees elevation. The range today was about 1450km. The satellite appeared to 'peak' a couple of minutes later than I expected. 4 element horizontal yagi pointed south and at 25 degrees elevation. ICOM IC 706 with 6m of RG58 and no preamp. Your results for the ICOM IC-R10 cause me to reconsider what I have been estimating for my much older YAESU FT-726R. Specifications from the Yaesu Operating Manual: 2m SSB/CW Less than 0.15uV for 10dB (S+N)/N 70cm SSB/CW Less than 0.15uV for 12dB (S+N)/N I would like to make this calculation myself but I am having trouble duplicating your results probably due to uncertainties resulting from how the formula is formatted by AMSAT-BB. Perhaps you have a document source to suggest that will resolve these uncertainties. TNX es 73 de Ralph W0RPK ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. Also, while I had the azimuth rotor disassembled, I installed a thermal switch mounted against the motor windings. The Thermal Circuit Protector, 75C is All Electronics part number THSW-75 and was $1.00 (less shipping). Perhaps we should define, most capable equipment. And we also need to define bang for the buck. What should a ham satellite program offer to the amateur community? If bringing new hams into this aspect of the hobby is important, then we need another AO-51 - which was probably the greatest marketing tool ever seen in the amateur satellite community. Its ease of use was the cause of scores of media alerts and publicity for amateur radio. And most importantly, it got more people looking skyward and thinking they could work amateur satellites than any other project. Then there was the marvelous marketing surrounding ARISSat-1 ... What else should an amateur satellite program offer? Many here want satellites that are only accessible with an investment of many hundreds of dollars' worth of antenna systems and equipment. (Some would actually love it if Technicians weren't allowed - that's how extreme thinking is on this topic.) Is THAT what will move the hobby forward for the masses? IS there a middle ground? Sure is a polarized topic (pun intended). Some want the hobby and sat use to grow ... others want to exclude as many fellow hams as possible. [amsat-bb] Re: Flex 5000
Alan, Dudley el al Here is what I am experiencing using ver 2.22 1. When I transmit on VFO B I get motor boating in the open receiver. The fix is to always put the uplink invfo b. The normal satpc32 in vu mode loads the transmit in vfo b. There is a special version of satpc32 that will do that but it does not have the voice announce feature. 2. When changing from uv to vu mode generates error and it takes extra key strokes to fix that. 3. I get desensing in the vu mode and the agc level has no effect reducing power helps. 4. The Flex does not load the modes from satpc32 correctly. 5. In the FM mode I only get a max of 20 watts out in previous version I got 60 watts output. 6. The VAC does not get input from vfo b. The VAC should be selectable both on transmit and receive. Comment I am a little frustrated having paid a premium for a satellite rig and 6 month later its performance does not yet match its analog radios equivalent performance. I appreciate all the help and support that Flex especially Dudley has given to me and I remain hopeful that they will fix the remaining issues. nick -Original Message- From: Alan P. Set up SATPC32 as for a TS-2000. It is neat to see a signal in the transponder, drag it to the passband, and you are ready to go. A few comments. The Satellite Mode in the SATPC32 setup does nothing, either way, due to the way the Flex is set up. Also, it is absolutely critical set the AGC-T properly. Set too high, and it appears to have a bad desense when you transmit. Set as they recommend, and it works perfectly. Finally, there are some issues with the squelch in FM causing motor boating in one of the receivers. That does seem to be new in 2.1.5 and has been identified as a problem. There are at least three issues where the VU5K does not quite get the emulation right. 1. It does not always assign the PTT to the correct VFO. You need to set this manually. 2. It does not set the TX mode. Set manually. 3. If you go from a VU to a UV satellite, or UV to VU, is chokes with some error messages, and then RX2 shuts down. From the messages, it seems to be trying to set both RX1 and RX2 to the same band. Restart RX2, and all is well. As a work around, I created a dummy satellite with both uplink and downlink on 20 meters. I select that first, and then the new satellite. It is faster, slightly, than clearing the error messages and restarting RX2. Flex has a bug report on this, and I talked with one of their people at the Huntsville Hamfest yesterday. The experiment will last only a few days, since the deployed 1000m tether will have so much drag, we will de-orbit in only a few days. The idea is a keyed CW oscillator on 7.010 MHz with harmonics on 14.020, 21.030 and 28.040 MHz. These bands are all in the IARU Satelilte allocation. We will filter all harmonics above 28 MHz. The challenge will be how to feed a 1000m long wire from only a 4x4x7 counterpoise (on all bands). transformer coupling? The tether will be vertical and can act as a long wire antenna with a very narrow cone angle pointed straight down. Antenna gain will be more than 10 dB on all bands. [amsat-bb] Re: Contact your representatives now to oppose HR 607 threat to 70 cm operations
Sent Nick de k5qxj -Original Message- From: amsat-bb-boun...@amsat.org [mailto:amsat-bb-boun...@amsat.org] On Behalf Of Alan P. Biddle Sent: Wednesday, March 16, 2011 11:07 AM To: AMSAT-BB Subject: [amsat-bb] Contact your representatives now to oppose HR 607 threat to 70 cm operations To our US members, This information has been disseminated by the ARRL, AMSAT, and other amateur related news services, but I will recap it here. A bill, HR 607, has been introduced with the aim of expanding Public Service communications. However, this bill uniquely proposes to transfer the 420-440 MHz band away from its current users. Considering that most amateur satellites use these frequencies, this would effectively end our operations if implemented. We are working with the ARRL to make this issue public, and to urge our members to contact their representatives. ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author.
