Yes, it carries the boards flown on FUNcube-1 so similar 435/ transponder,
just different frequencies.

Re: [amsat-bb] Obtaining G/T of the satellite Ground Station.

2014-06-04 Thread Nick Pugh K5QXJ
One way to measure the g/t is to use sun noise. You point your antenna
toward the sun and cold sky and measure the delta noise. Use that attached
ss to calculate the g/t . I have a similar system and let compare notes.
Also take a look at the SETTI League doc for back grown

Dear all,
We have a functional Ground station setup at QTH location MK68WM. We have a
2 Unit array of circularly polarized Yagi antenna mounted on antenna rotor
system for tracking satellites operating in UHF band.
Instrumentation available with us is Signal generators, Signal Analyzers,
Vector Network analyzer, Spectrum Analyzer. The ground station setup
includes antenna,Low noise amplifier, followed by 15m LMR 400 coax carrying
signals to Kenwood TS2000 and RF switches to protect LNA during
transmission.

We wish to obtain G/T ratio of our system. Could you please throw some light
on how to proceed?

Subject: [amsat-bb] UHF antenna radiation pattern measurement

All,

My students and I are working on a way to rapidly measure the radiation
pattern of various UHF antennas. We are using a pair of RFM22s - the
transmitter sends magnetometer (azimuth) and accelerometer (elevation) data
from a LSM303 along with its output power level. The receiving
RFM22 appends the received signal strength value.

From there what we want to do is real time plotting on a net book. 2D seems
readily achievable through either LabView's polar plots or a number of
different Python plotting libraries. However what we'd really like to do is
real-time 3D plotting, but we don't know the right toolchain or libraries.
We know we can do it in Matlab, but that won't be in real time.

Are we on the right track? Has this been done before? Should we settle for
a pair of 2D plots, or can real time 3D be done?

Is there interest in the community for something like this? If it is, that
would place different requirements on us (economical, easy to duplicate,
good documentation, open software, etc).

NX1U

You can certainly look at the sun terminator line on the map. If the entire
visibility circle of the satellite on the earth is on the dark side
of the terminator, the satellite is in eclipse. But I also remember
seeing a little legend somewhere on the screen that says Satellite is in
eclipse or something like that when it is.

I haven't done anything with AO-73, but I understand it's transmitting the
FEC format I originally designed for AO-40.

How well is it working? What fraction of the frames are successfully
decoded? How bad is the fading? I designed my format specifically for the
spin fading on AO-40, and if the fading due to the tumbling of a cubesat is
too slow my format won't be able to fix it.

 Hello Group!

After about 6 months of work, I'm proud to say that the K5UTD Amateur
Radio Club (University of Texas at Dallas) has finished setting up
our satellite station. Typically it should take a weekend and a case
of beer to get the job done, but this required a little more planning
and involvement as we had to collect the parts from various people
and build several components on our own; not to mention the fact that
we get side-tracked like no other club. For example, an effort to get
the rotor controller resulted in moving about four truckloads worth
 of gear.

We're using an FT-847 for our primary radio, and a Kenpro G-5400 for
our rotor system. We've interfaced the G-5400 to the computer using
 an Arduino.
It works rather well with GPredict. The final bug in the system has
to do with GPredict talking to the '847, but that should be easily
 fixed with an update.

The antennas are on the roof of our Engineering and Computer Science
building, about 20 feet off the roof, 70 feet above ground. Out of
luck, we had a GlenMartin RT-936 and the associated non-penetrating
mount just hanging out in our closet. Carrying the 50 cinder blocks
up to the roof for that mount was not fun though. Coax wise, we have
about 20 feet of Davis Bury-flex for our initial run, which then
feeds some very nice ARR preamps.
The final 200 foot run of coax to the shack is 1/2 Heliax. There are
a few jumpers here in the shack too.

I was able to make a few contacts through SO-50 today, and plan to be
more active. With the help of DK3WN's SatBlog, I've had no trouble
picking out some cubesats and listening to the beacons and telemetry.
Telemetry collection is one of the primary goals for this station.
Our other goals for this station, aside from having fun on the air,
are to get club recognition on campus and to work with the William B.
Hanson Center for Space Sciences on upper atmospheric projects.

Also, if you know a member of the former TI club, give them a hug (or
handshake) on our behalf. None of the current K5UTD projects could
 have been possible without them.

[amsat-bb] antenna performance

2014-03-07 Thread Nick Pugh K5QXJ
The University of Louisiana sat team is trying to check the performance of
its VHF and UHF antenna. Here is the data we would like to know. The receive
signal strength of the beacon on the V and U sat and the idle noise when the
antenna is pointed to cold sky. To make the measurements useful we also need
to know the antenna gain and the bandwidth of your receiver, the satellite
and the distance to the satellite at the time of the measurement. If you
have the ability to measure signal strength please respond to this email

Thanks

I forgot that one of the rigs here was on. It happened to be set for
145.825mHZ in FM. A few minutes ago the squelch was broken by what sounded
like 1200BPS AFSK. It almost sounded like the old UOSATS. Checking my
satellite tracking program I determined it wasn't CAPE-2, TRITON-1 or
DELFIN3XT. What birds are up now that have downlinks on or around
145.825mHZ fm? Maybe I have a set of erroneous keps. Any information on
this would be appreciated.

Hello my friends !

The pass over western Europe of orbits between 204 and 308 (this last
yesterday) were well received, especially the CW telemetry (decoded by ears
:-) because of its interesting sound).
This morning, during orbit 323 pass (AOS 0732 UTC here) a continuous
carrier alone was heard, slowly frequency modulated at the rate of the
satellite rotation due to the voltage variation with no battery available :
period 4 seconds, amplitude 850 Hz.
Better, have a look here :

Hi all

5.1 v is essentially the battery voltage on our li cells which is very bad
news. We believe our charging scheme has failed and cooked our batteries. We
now think we have no battery capacity . The good news we can maintain a
positive power budget when we are in daylight. Please keep sending us your
signal reports

Hi Roland.

Nice data from CAPE-2.

Curious about the unregulated bus voltage around 5.2V.
Doesn't seem to fit with a single or double Li poly cell. However, if it's
the output from 2 series solar cells, that might indicate the batteries are
fully charged and we are seeing the max power point tracker backing off
because nothing needs current. (hence the high voltage)

All speculation. Sadly I need to be a few hundred miles further south to
get a decent elevation.

Thanks for the very interesting site.

Regards

David

The signal to noise ratio is not too good because I'm using an old AM/FM
scanner from the 80s heterodyned by my medium wave homebrew transmitter
fitted with a 456.9 Xtal. The antenna was a vertical half-wave inside the
attic.

The next orbit, number 205, was heard too, with the CW beacon affected at
that time by a hoarse voice and suffering from a strong fadding. So I'm not
absolutly sure, poor lonesome telegraphist, of my human decoding, M5UL CAPE

between 12:12:52 and 12:13:06 :

sky bandwidth of 15 KHz should be ~ -129 dbm I will monitor the sat and give

There could be a variety of different reasons.  First, the satellite didn’t

Hi Nick.

I've just loaded the latest set of keps for CAPE 2 and have managed to
receive a signal at the first attempt from the right direction / frequency
and time.

The pass was at 12.30UTC when the satellite was within range of London.

I was listening in USB to try and detect weak signals. However, not
necessary as the signal was quite good (about 'S4')

CW at 12.32. Frequency pulling as the CW was keying. best freq 145.823

Then at 12.36 some stronger FM. (shame I was still in USB) Best frequency
145.822 (SSB)

As I'm at 51 degrees North the highest pass I see is about 17 degrees
elevation.

The range today was about 1450km.

The satellite appeared to 'peak' a couple of minutes later than I expected.

4 element horizontal yagi pointed south and at 25 degrees elevation. ICOM
IC 706 with 6m of RG58 and no preamp.

I'll have a try at the next pass, but I can't find anything on the CAPE
website which describes the sequence or timing of the transmissions. If you
can send a link for this info and I'll be able to anticipate the timings and
modes.

Thanks

Hi Nick.

Yes, can hear what I believe is CAPE-2 in London. But still don't know the
sequence of transmission.

14.11 Carrier on 145.824 - did not hear the modulation (below the city
rooftops) pos interference.

14.12 Good CW signal - S5 very easy copy. Frequency low and pulled by CW
(chirp)

14.14 Single 1200 packet burst.

14.16 More CW from below roofline. In CW mode on IC706 this was best
received on 145.920

Could be that you are a couple of KHz low of 825.

Keps used are:

CAPE-2

Hi again.

For the ICOM IC706 in CW mode with internal preamp on:

The S4 reading equates to -117dBm

The S5 reading is -115dBm

6m of RG58 is 0.95dB at 145MHz

Antenna gain is about +8dBi

Off pointing loss is about 2dB

Range for these signals was closer to 1500km

Have fun with the path loss equations.

 Nick,

I just tried mine, and it starts fine. Normally the Satpc32 programs are
 good with error messages,
though they may be auf Deutsch. Any chance an antivirus program is
blocking it by mistake? I have
had that happen with other programs over the years. Otherwise, nothing to

 suggest, except for a
complete backup, removal and reinstall, test the fresh version, and then

 restore your old data.
Perhaps Erich or someone will have a better answer.

I was hoping other on the list had the same problem.

problem? You asked about SatPC32ISS earlier. Is this the same problem,
that is, nothing now works?

You could try a restore from the DataBackup program.

73s,

Alan

[amsat-bb] help with the CAPE II sat

2013-11-29 Thread Nick Pugh K5QXJ
Hi AMSATERS

The CAPE team is having trouble copying the bacon's from out sat below is a
table of our receiver noise with different azimuths notice our system
temperature terminated in a 50 resistor is 367 deg k and when connected to
an antenna ranges from 4000 to 12000 deg k. The noise appears to be white
noise

Question

1.Does this seem reasonable?

2. If the noise is not reasonable how to you go about trouble shooting
it?

3.We are concerned about the gain of our antenna to help us trouble
shoot this question what is the bacon at 145.935 mhz received level on
fundcube-1 what is your antenna gain and what range to the sat did you
observe the receive level?

Nick, we think we picked up CAPE-2 this evening during the 5:48 pm pass over
Michigan. We saw a nice Doppler shifted signal centered at 437.325.
See attached figure. It shows 2 doppler curves centered around 437.325 and
around 437.405.

To: AMSAT-BB; Ralph Wallio, W0RPK
Subject: [amsat-bb] Re: AMSAT-BB NF formula posting

Hi Ralph, W0RPK

I will write the formula in another arithmetical form:

NF   =  ( Vi x 10^-6 )^2 ) x 20 ) / (BW x S/N ) ) log) x 10 )  + 174
   dB
10

where:

Vi = input signal in uV applied over the 50 ohm RX input BW = Band Wide in
Hz (2400 Hz for SSB) S/N = Signal to Noise ratio in power ratio = 10

Going to your YAESU FT-726 R the sensitivity is specified for 10 dB of
(S+N)/N and not for 10 dB of S/N so that we must convert first (S+N)/N into
S/N with the following formula:

S + N
S/N = --- - 1 = 10 log (10-1) = 9.54 in power ratio
   N10

Calculating the sensitivity for 2 meters SSB/CW less than 0.15 uV for 10
dB (S+N)/N we have:

NF =( 0.15 x 10^-6)^2 ) x 20 ) / ( 2400 x 9.54 ) ) log) x 10 ) + 174
= 6.9 dB
   dB
10

Calculating the sensitivity for 70 cm SSB/CW less than 0.15 uV for 12 dB
(S+N)/N we have:

S + N
S/N = --- - 1 = 10 log (15.84 -1) = 14.84 in power ratio
   N10

NF  =   (0.15 x 10^-6 )^2 ) x 20 ) / ( 2400 x 14.84 ) ) log   ) x 10 ) + 174
= 5.01 dB
   dB
10

CONCLUSION:

The sensitivity in 2 meters and 70 cm is the same 0.15 uV but in 70 cm 0.15
uV are specified for 12 dB (S+N)/N and not 10 dB (S+N)/N as in 2 meters and
so it happen that the receiver is more sensitive in 70 cm

The formulas where published into an old issue of the Ham Radio Magazine
early about 1973 and I have to find it in my many papers after that I will
send a copy to you but I remember it very often ant this numbars are burned
into my brain HI HI !

I hope this helps and if you have any question please let me know.

Thanks for posting the NF formula. Your results for the ICOM IC-R10 cause
me to reconsider what I have been estimating
for my much older YAESU FT-726R. Specifications from the Yaesu Operating
Manual:

  2m SSB/CW Less than 0.15uV for 10dB (S+N)/N

  70cm SSB/CW Less than 0.15uV for 12dB (S+N)/N

I would like to make this calculation myself but I am having trouble
duplicating your results probably due to uncertainties
resulting from how the formula is formatted by AMSAT-BB.

Perhaps you have a document source to suggest that will resolve these
uncertainties.

Nick,

Finally dug through my Yaesu receipts to get the AZ pot info from this past
April. At that time, the part number was S8101678, Pot. 500 Ohm(new).
Price, including shipping, was $20.51. This pot doesn't have the wire from
the wiper.

Also, while I had the azimuth rotor disassembled, I installed a thermal
switch mounted against the motor windings. The Thermal Circuit Protector,
75C is All Electronics part number THSW-75 and was $1.00 (less shipping).
When I next have to open the elevation rotor I'll install one there, too.

I had this several years ago. When I got it open, the pot was fine, but the
fine center arm wire had broken due to fatigue. Another bad mechanical
design issue in these otherwise nice rotors.

By all means, get a replacement, but if the pot is good and could be easily
repaired by soldering and reinforcing mechanically the connection, you can
keep the spare for when you really need it.

Good luck!!

it, launch opportunities are so rare that we ought to fly the most capable

And AMSAT is just learning to build cubesats. For AMSAT-NA, Fox-1 is a

While HEO launch opportunities do not exist now, but that does not mean

would not build an HEO satellite when opportunities do come. In the
meantime, we are making lemonade and preparing through practice.

Perhaps we should define, most capable equipment. And we also need to
define bang for the buck.

What should a ham satellite program offer to the amateur community?
If bringing new hams into this aspect of the hobby is important, then we
need another AO-51 - which was probably the greatest marketing tool ever
seen in the amateur satellite community. Its ease of use was the cause of
scores of media alerts and publicity for amateur radio.
And most importantly, it got more people looking skyward and thinking they
could work amateur satellites than any other project.

Then there was the marvelous marketing surrounding ARISSat-1 ...

What else should an amateur satellite program offer? Many here want
satellites that are only accessible with an investment of many hundreds of
dollars' worth of antenna systems and equipment. (Some would actually love
it if Technicians weren't allowed - that's how extreme thinking is on this
topic.) Is THAT what will move the hobby forward for the masses?

IS there a middle ground? Sure is a polarized topic (pun intended). Some
want the hobby and sat use to grow ... others want to exclude as many fellow
hams as possible.

Doppler shift. The signal get up to 6db above the noise with fades in the
noise during the pass. I have a 15 db gain antenna and a system noise figure
about 2 db.

Hi Nick,
in the last three years ITAMSAT IO-26 has been in MBL mode, that is in safe
minimum telemetry mode.
Following the confirmation from an AMSAT-NA team that the receivers are
still working and a few attempts to reload the high level operational code
(IHT), the spacecraft was returned to this mode.
After 18 years from launch (on the 26th of September 1993) battery, solar
panels and all subsystems seem to be in fair shape. Mike DK3WN has written a
great software to decode the MBL telemetry and all reception reports are
welcome!

[amsat-bb] Re: Flex 5000

2011-08-22 Thread Nick Pugh K5QXJ
Alan, Dudley el al

Here is what I am experiencing using ver 2.22

1. When I transmit on VFO B I get motor boating in the open
receiver. The fix is to always put the uplink invfo b. The
normal satpc32 in vu mode loads the transmit in vfo b. There is a special
version of satpc32 that will do that but it does not have the
voice announce feature.
2. When changing from uv to vu mode generates error and it takes
extra key strokes to fix that.
3. I get desensing in the vu mode and the agc level has no effect
reducing power helps.
4. The Flex does not load the modes from satpc32 correctly.
5. In the FM mode I only get a max of 20 watts out in previous
version I got 60 watts output.
6. The VAC does not get input from vfo b. The VAC should be
selectable both on transmit and receive.

Comment
I am a little frustrated having paid a premium for a satellite rig
and 6 month later its performance does not yet match its analog radios
equivalent performance. I appreciate all the help and support that Flex
especially Dudley has given to me and I remain hopeful that they
will fix the remaining issues.

Nick,

Actually, it works pretty well with the latest version. Set up SATPC32 as
for a TS-2000. It is neat to see a signal in the transponder, drag it to
the passband, and you are ready to go.

A few comments. The Satellite Mode in the SATPC32 setup does nothing,
either way, due to the way the Flex is set up. Also, it is absolutely
critical set the AGC-T properly. Set too high, and it appears to have a bad
desense when you transmit. Set as they recommend, and it works perfectly.
Finally, there are some issues with the squelch in FM causing motor
boating in one of the receivers. That does seem to be new in 2.1.5 and has
been identified as a problem.

There are at least three issues where the VU5K does not quite get the
emulation right.

1. It does not always assign the PTT to the correct VFO. You need to set
this manually.

2. It does not set the TX mode. Set manually.

3. If you go from a VU to a UV satellite, or UV to VU, is chokes with some
error messages, and then RX2 shuts down. From the messages, it seems to be
trying to set both RX1 and RX2 to the same band. Restart RX2, and all is
well. As a work around, I created a dummy satellite with both uplink and
downlink on 20 meters. I select that first, and then the new satellite. It
is faster, slightly, than clearing the error messages and restarting RX2.

Flex has a bug report on this, and I talked with one of their people at the
Huntsville Hamfest yesterday.

Cubesat HF experiment:

We have revised our HF satellite experiment proposal to be a CW telemetry
beacon on 40, 20, 15 and 10 meter bands. The experiment will last only a
few days, since the deployed 1000m tether will have so much drag, we will
de-orbit in only a few days.

The idea is a keyed CW oscillator on 7.010 MHz with harmonics on 14.020,
21.030 and 28.040 MHz. These bands are all in the IARU Satelilte
allocation. We will filter all harmonics above 28 MHz.

The challenge will be how to feed a 1000m long wire from only a 4x4x7
counterpoise (on all bands). transformer coupling?

The tether will be vertical and can act as a long wire antenna with a very
narrow cone angle pointed straight down. Antenna gain will be more than 10
dB on all bands. This moving donut gain pattern sweeping across the earth
should pose some interesting reception reports (If any of it gets through
the ionosphere).

Launch Opportunity no earlier than March 2012. Putting us closer and closer
to the Solar Max which would be the worst time for this experiment.

Other than a nice AMSAT experiment, if anyone can use this for valid
ionosphereic science, come join us.

To our US members,

This information has been disseminated by the ARRL, AMSAT, and other amateur
related news services, but I will recap it here. A bill, HR 607, has been
introduced with the aim of expanding Public Service communications.
However, this bill uniquely proposes to transfer the 420-440 MHz band away
from its current users. Considering that most amateur satellites use these
frequencies, this would effectively end our operations if implemented. We
are working with the ARRL to make this issue public, and to urge our members
to contact their representatives.
