Re: [amsat-bb] Field Day ISS passes

2014-07-02 Thread Scott Richardson
I rested a digital recorder on the speaker of a handheld to get about 4 minutes
of ISS audio on 6/29 near 2141Z. The recording picks up my vain attempts to get
attention, which also desensed the receiver at times, so it's not clean, but
it's better than nothing. These are the acknowledgments I can hear (with a tiny
amount of guesswork).

2012-01-02 Thread Scott Richardson
I work into California occasionally. AO-27 in mid or late afternoon would be
the way, as my gear is limited and in various states of disrepair. Crowded
passes are sometimes tough for my portable station and when I get fed up with
impolite ops and alligators I take a break of a few passes or a few weeks. Hope
to work you one of these days.

I've worked a few others in Maine, so keep listening.

[amsat-bb] Re: ARISSat clock and TLM records

2011-08-18 Thread Scott Richardson
Last night I captured my first telemetry frames by holding a digital
recorder in front of the speaker on my TH-F6A, then playing the audio back
through my soundcard an hour or so later. I was pleasantly surprised to get
a few good frames and impressed with how smoothly the software worked.

Unfortunately, the timestamps in the CSV file are the playback times, not
the capture times. I realized this after auto-submitting the telemetry.
Would this "bad data" have been filtered somehow upon submission? When I use
this method, should I manually edit the timestamps and submit the CSV via
email while turning off autosubmit?

Tnx and 73, Scott N1AIA

[amsat-bb] TH-F6A tip request

2011-02-02 Thread Scott Richardson
I got a surprise gift of a Kenwood TH-F6A and look forward to giving it a
try on the satellites. I know there are a few owners on the list -- Drew,
Patrick, others -- and wonder if folks have any tips to share (I've read
through the eham reviews). I'm especially interested in experiences with
speaker/mics and headsets, headphones with 2.5mm plugs, quality of
after-market programming cables, etc. I'll typically be using the F6A as one
of two radios -- the receiver for the easy sats -- and want to record passes
while listening or operating. Thanks in advance for any ideas that will make
its use more effective and enjoyable.

I've been recording passes and decoding .wav files after the fact with
TrueTTY. No need for a rig/soundcard interface. It's a bit clumsy, but easy.
My satellite ops are all portable and I don't have a notebook computer.

Buff,

I don't recommend the Olympus VN-6200PC. Though it's a nice recorder, it
saves only WMV files. I'd rather have had MP3. It also dramatically desenses
the receiver in my FT-470 on the 70cm FAST1 downlink (maybe other
frequencies, too, but I haven't surveyed the band).

I applied at space-track several weeks ago and have heard nothing to date. I
entered AMSAT-NA for the required "organization," but that was a guess. I
did check Ham Radio Operator. For now, I'm satisfied with Orbitron updates

[amsat-bb] Re: broken links

2009-09-08 Thread Scott Richardson
I can help with the website, too, and would be happy to be part of a team.
My offer to volunteer went to Gould just a few days ago and he may not have
had an opportunity to consider it yet.

I've kept my disappointment with the current site to myself, knowing that I
cannot volunteer to be a standalone AMSAT webmaster. But like several others
writing today, I am willing to take on part of the job. If the BOD needs a
single responsible point of contact, it would be up to that person (if he or
she exists) to decide if it's going to be a solo or shared effort.

The wiki approach sounds reasonable and wouldn't need to be hosted
elsewhere. I don't know why we couldn't simply set up a subdomain at the
current host(wiki.amsat.org?) and get the job started this week. It's also
possible the site can be improved as currently structured, simply through
intense attention to content.

FWIW the only Cushcraft item I ever purchased was built on the "MFJ model."
It wasn't till after a rig went up in smoke that I discovered that only one
half of the driven element was connected inside the factory-assembled feed
housing. From my unfortunate perspective, the Cushcraft move to MFJ seems
appropriate.
