Hey Dave,

AO-7 will be n Mode A tonight. You won't have a chance to get to him tonight or
Monday - according to what he has told me via email.

I am going to try for Wednesday morning and, because of the significant stretch
of the footprint, hoping that you and everyone else will give us a chance to
make a very brief contact. From here, my window is less than a minute - but
it's do-able. Adrian represents my only chance to get Hawaii in the log from
here, and I'm hopeful I'll have a legitimate chance to do that.

I hope you get him, too. Good luck.

Tim - N3TL

Folks,
I know we have had some atmospheric issues that have made recent passes
ifficult at best. I am still trying to help a few of you on some low angle
asses to get KH6 into your logs.
Having said that I am seeing very little activity on the SSB satellites. Last
ight I again worked several satellites and all I heard was my own voice calling
Q during every pass. Today I worked three passes FO29, VU52 and HO28. I only
ad one CONUS operator and one KH6 contact on HO28. Very disappointing.
So either there is little interest in KH6 or there are timing issues. I am not
ure why there is so little participation.
will look at the coming passes until April 4th which will most likely be the
ast day I operate from Kauai. If I don't start hearing more operators I will
hut down early and work on enjoying my vacation.
Again sorry for another rant session but the lack of activity frankly puzzles
fter all the emails and sked requests that I have received over the last 6
eeks. Those operators that have worked me will be the few to get a KH6 card
nce the log is checked and I go to the printers.
Remember "If it was easy, we would all be doing it", under the conditions I
have
een working under: wind, rain and heavy QRN it has been very challenging these
ast few days.

Hi folks,
Since starting my effort to work Europe on AO-7, I've found that the very low
levation sigs vary significantly on different
asses. Some mornings I can easily hear my downlink and start working
urope at 0.7 degrees elevation, while other days I can't hear myself
ntil 5 degrees elevation, after the window to Europe has closed. Not
ure if this is due to band conditions, satellite polarization,
bstructions at certain positions, operator error, local noise, or what.
Today I spoke with another experienced AO-7 op and he had an interesting
theory:
n the bad days (when I don't hear my downlink until 5 degress), the sat is in
ode C (lower power). This seems to make sense, because there does not seem to
e any middle ground -- I start hearing my downlink at either 0.7 degrees or 5
egrees, never at 2-4 degrees.
Anyone have any thoughts on this? Are we able to predict when the sat will be
n one mode or another? Or any other explanation for the signal strength
ariations?
73, Bill NZ5N

[amsat-bb] Re: AO-7 is not OK

2010-04-14 Thread davekn4ok

Great Reply Tim,

I try to tell the ops on AO7 to watch there input power. This old lady just
can't handle us old men pumping the high power into her.

By the way, I had some very distorted signal the other morning and was so
afraid she was damaged.

Best 73's AO7 ops,

See ya on the bird!

Dave, kn4ok

Mike, Piraja and all,
Please take a moment to visit the page on the AO-7 Web site that includes an
ssay from AO-7 Project Manager Jan King, W3GEY. You will find that essay here:
ttp://www.planetemily.com/ao7/history.php?PHPSESSID=5cc1e3be993405e687967faffcac4407
According to Jan, AO-7 no longer uses batteries in its current condition. It is
owered completely by the solar array. He explains fully what he believes to
ave happened. Here are some excepts for the full essay Jan wrote, which appears
n the page I provided the link to (NOTE - scroll down toward the borrom of the
age to find Jan's report):
"I am certain what has happened (and I know why): The battery did fail short.
irtually all of the cells failed in a shorted mode eventually. This shorted
ondition placed a shunt across the solar arrays and prevented current from
oing to the satellite loads (i.e. the transponders, in particular). Some time
efore G3IOR reported hearing the spacecraft again the short on one of the cells
1 out of 10) failed a second time. This time, it went from short to "open."
hen it went open this released the shunt that was pulling the array voltage
own and allowed the current to pass to the satellite loads. Since there is no
attery at all now (because one cell went open), when AO-7 goes into eclipse
ith each orbit, the satellite has no power to operate and shuts down in the
ark."

lso:

People should realize that the solar arrays are old and they don't put out more
han a few watts now. That's the only power available to run the
ransponders. So, if they uplink too much power it will just cause the
ransmitter to sort of 'cave in.' The voltage on the satellite bus begins to sag
adly when a heavy demand is placed on the transponder (by a large uplinking
ignal) since there is nothing there to regulate it and then the oscillators in
he receiver and transmitter chain start changing frequency. People call this
FMing' and that is what is going on."

an's entire essay is fascinating.
The primary reason I consider AO-7 the flagship of the amateur satellite fleet
s her amazing story and legacy. I consider myself blessed and fortunate to have
n opportunity to work the "Grand Old Girl" now, more than 25 years after she
eached orbit. Even on her bad days - and today appears to be one, as I write
his - I am able to clearly copy my CW signal on the downlink from about 20
egrees elevation running only 5 watts out of a Yaesu FT-817 from my handheld
lk dual-band yagi - and working from inside my home on the second floor, my
plink signal shooting through the second-floor ceiling and roof. I believe she
poils us on her good days with the ability to enable contacts that span oceans
nd continents - even with a station like mine.

am grateful for every orbit during which I am able to hear such an amazing
iece of amateur-radio hardware still working as hard as she can.

3 to all,

im - N3TL

ignal via AO-7. Using two pre-amplifier, one in the TS 2000x and the other
ith 0.6 noise with 20 dB gain. During the orbits we transmiting power with
f 30 watts. The satellite does not respond. Tried with 15 watts It was
hen that we hear at certain points on the downlink audio too low. Its best
erformance is when the satellite is almost 90 degrees from my station.
et it seems that the satellite is asking for help.
This seems the batteries are not getting enough loads. Or maybe it's
xcessive use of power by the users of the satellite.
Maybe it's time for the users of AO-7 rethink the best ways to keep QSO
hrough it, such as the use of LOW POWER so that over time the satellite is
tabilized.

[amsat-bb] Re: Operating question: FT-736r and HO-68/VO-52

2010-05-30 Thread davekn4ok

GE Bill,

Let's talk about VO-52

First, chose which vfo A or B. It does not matter, but it helps for operating
different birds.

For this example, use vfo A.

Locate the Sat switch close to the left center and turn to TX.

Your TX for the bird will be 435 mhz LSB

Now turn your satellite switch to the RX position.

Your RX will be 145 mhz USB.

To tune or find your freq.: I decide what downlink freq I want use like
145.900. I place the RX in CW, then change to the TX to CW and dit my way til
I hear it on 145.900. Then switch the TX to LSB and my RX to USB. You should
hear your downlink just fine. Watch your power like 5 watts and tune your TX
to your RX freq. It will move as the bird moves across the sky. Don't touch
the RX please.

I hope this helps.

I will attempt the 1420 UTC pass this morning on SO-50. Just worked the AO-51
ass with some difficulty with electrical noise in the area but still made
ontact with 6 stations. I am in grids DN83/84 South of Rapid City, SD. GPS
hows this campground right on the line, so 2 grids for one.. Anyone needing
hese grids, just email me or send a card to home listed on QRZ.com., no SASE
equired.
Trip has been pretty good with good and bad weather. Terrible winds in Wyoming
t +60mph not fun when pulling a trailer. Weather here this morning is 45
nd sunny, and NO WIND...
I am "hit and miss" on passes, so bear with me. If you hear me on, then call
e...

[amsat-bb] Re: field day

2010-06-28 Thread davekn4ok

We had a Blast also during FD! I was one of the ops from our club station
(K4BFT Big Fat Turkey) and worked many of you. I think AO-51 sounded more like
ch 19! LOL LOL

Had an absolute blast on field day. AO-7 sounded like a 20M pile up .
ven the S band operation on AO-51 was busy. With so many stations on the
atellites should we not have more AMSAT members? Defined as more dues paying
nd contributing members. This is rocket science and as I been preaching, "this
s rocket science and that ain't cheap".
