[amsat-bb] Re: IC-9100 best price ever

2012-11-23 Thread Craig Gagner
That's a great discount, too bad the radio is still $1500 over priced.. I
got the chance to play with one for a couple of hours and although the HF is
a little better than my TS-2000 still doesn't come close to my Flex 5000,
its not worth the price difference of a TS-2000. Even with the added price
of the down converter to fix the birdie problem with the TS-2000.

Just my 2 cents worth.

$505 discount offer from GigaParts.

Have fun!

2012-11-23 Thread Stefan Wagener
Thanks Craig,

No problem. I sold my TS-2000X and bought the IC-9100 a while ago. I will
never look back. The Icom runs circles around the TS-2000. To each its own.

Have a great Thanksgiving!

2011-02-25 Thread Nigel Gunn G8IFF/W8IFF
There aren't any satellites on 6M.

There's always the old fashioned solution, an HF receiver, an HF transmitter
and a pair of converters or transverters.
They're still available for the microwave bands.

There must be older 2M and 70cM multimode rigs available used ( IC211E, TS700,
IC202/404 etc) that will happily drive
transverters for the higher bands and amplifiers for their own band.

HRO has the Icom 9100 on it's site now for the low low price of
 $3799.95
 http://www.hamradio.com/detail.cfm?pid=H0-010763

Wow, when I first saw that radio some time ago I thought it was
 supposed to
be some kind of discount radio since they didn't even include a color
display. So, now I am wondering, what is the advantage of one IC-9100
 for
 $3800 over two IC-7000 for $2400?

You can purchase not two IC -7000s but three IC-7000s for the price of one
IC-9100, and still have $200 left over !
A young nephew of mine -who is a Tech- is studying for
his General, and he was eyeing both the IC-7000 and the yet to be
released IC-9100.

Have no doubt - now - that he will purchase an IC-7000 .

But just because something is listed as a satellite radio, why only limit it
to the satellite bands? Satellite radios also make good VHF/UHF weak signal
and contest radios.

I have both an FT-847, and a TS-790. I prefer the FT-847 for satellite
work, and the TS-790 for weak signal work. It's mostly what I'm used to,
and the '847 seems to be easier to use for satellites. The TS-790 seems
to have a better receiver, and one of these days I'll use my IF-232 to
run it with SatPC32 to see how well it works on satellites.
They're both very nice radios.

Ouch! Well, for that price, you can get 2 IC7000s and keep the

not taking into account local price differences.

The IC-9100 is far from being a bargain - one can find pristine IC-910's for
around $900, or $1500 with the 1.2 GHz module installed. In my case, I have
plenty of HF radios, so I just needed to add UHF and VHF. A TS-2000 goes from
$1600 to $2000 ...

I will never own one at that price or likely even half that! Even if
donated, I'd likely flip it for say a couple of 847's or TS-2000's. Even if

As an extremely pleased owner/heavy user of a Kenwood TS2000X,
it is interesting to see that ICOM has (finally) also a kind
of similar radio now, the IC-9100:

http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/hamhf/5091.html

Will be interesting to see if it also has a satellite mode,
but based on the number (910 + another 0 added) I assume
it will. Let's see how this compares to the many built-in
DSP features of the TS-2000X. The TS2000 was (one of) the
most feature rich radios when it was launched. ICOM now
has had the opportunity (8+ years later) to take advantage
of all the SDR developments and ICs that came available in
the past years.
