Come on guys, take it easy. Some questions might not make sense to you, because not all members in this forum (including myself) are native English speakers. Adam, to come to your question, my understanding of MapActivity.isRouteDisplayed() is that, you should return true if your map activity is going to show navigation. If your app will request map info from the Google servers frequently for supporting navigation, Google wants to know that. From what I understand, your case is a bit grey area. If you are going to display the route information once and that's it, I would return false. Otherwise I would return true. Hi, android.accounts.AccountManager can be used to get an auth token. How does one use it to authenticate to an appengine app, which is secured behind a filter, i.e., user needs to be logged-in in order to use the app? Specifically, what are the parameters/headers to be sent in the https request from android-app to appengine? Does one get back a cookie? If so, how does one use that? [android-developers] Problems installing the Android ADT Plug in on Eclipse
Installed Eclipse JDK 3.7.1 after the Android SDK. Started up Eclipse and tried to install the ADT Plug in. It saw the developer tools on the google web site attempted to install DDMS, Dev Tools, Hierarchy Viewer, and Traceview, but gives an error: Cannot complete the install because on or more required items could not be found. Software being installed: Android Development tools 16.0.1.v201112150204-238534. I have no idea what is missing. Any ideas on this? [android-developers] NEWBIE Question - Activity/Service Views
I have my application coded all ok and works perfect and various Android o/s versions. Now all I want to do is remove the View from my activity completly. so nothing pops up when the application is run, and It can then just sit happily in the background running and using the notification bar to tell the user whats happening if an event occours? Is there any way of doing this? The application must start on boot, I dont mind creating it as a service as long as all the api's etc still work the same. [android-developers] Get correct orientation and screen size for View?
Hi, within my App I use a View where the drawing function is overwritten so that I can paint my own things. To get a correct result I evaluate the screen size and then draw within the returned available range. Now it might happen that the user rotates its tablet and switches from landscape to portrait orientation. To detect that I'm using a SensorManager that notifies me about orientation changes. Unfortunately I never get a portrait-orientation returned but only Configuration.ORIENTATION_SQUARE when the tabled is rotated from landscape view to portrait. Beside of that current width and height (returned by WindowManager) are equal after rotation, so I really get a square-sized view and parts of my display are left unused. Amazingly Configuration.ORIENTATION_LANDSCAPE works correct, including return of the correct screen dimensions. What could be the reason for this behaviour? Hi I write an application for Motorola Xoom tablet with Android 3.1 that can scan multiple QR Codes in real time with it's camera and that displays additional information in the display over recognised QR Codes. The recognition is done with the ZXing android app (http:// code.google.com/p/zxing/), I basically just changed the code of the ZXing app so that it can recognise multiple QR Codes at the same time and can do this scan continually, without freezing after a successful scan like the original app does. So my app is basically the ZXing app with continous scanning of multiple QR Codes. But I'm facing a problem: 1. The ZXing app makes some sort of continous autofocus. It starts the autofocus and when it is finished it automatically starts the autofocus again. But this method somehow makes the camera brightness settings too bright, so that the camera cannot recognize the QR Codes because the image is almost totally white. Disabling the autofocus solves the problem, but I need autofocus because otherwise the recognition of the QR Codes is only possible at a certain distance. - How can I change the brightness settings of the camera? - Does somebody know another possibility for autofocus? [android-developers] MapView, Overlay's, TextView too many onDraw
I have a mapview in RelativeLayout defined in main.xml, that also includes another layout as a viewstub to display status message to the users. I set the visibility of the status bar to 'gone' when I inflate the stub. Thereafter any new message (put on the status bar by a thread/async task) will set the visibility to 'visible' to display the message. After the task is done, it remove the message from status bar and set its visibility to gone. BTW GPS is on to get new lat/lng and to move the map accordingly and display overlays Everything is working...but Question: There are way to many onDraw into mapview even when the device is not moving. I traced it to status bar, anytime new a message is put on status bar, the postInvalidate from there trickles down into mapview, even though the device has not moved a millimeter, lat/lng have not changed, no new map tiles are needed etc. If I remove the status bar, I see normal invalidates to mapview i.e. 2-3 depending on my logic in overlay class which I'm OK with. However when I say large postInvalidates while device is sitting on its behind, they number around 70-80 Any ideas as to whats going on in/with the view hierarchy, how to prevent it ? Hi, I want to develop application that will read GPS location and Signal Stregth in dBm at each GPS Location for every second.Recording is done along the railway tracks on a moving train (approximately 100 KMPH speed).Using this data i will report user (Railway user) about signal stregth of a carrier.In my observation GPS Locations getting my application are some times not accurate(with accuracy 100 meters) even though i put mobile at windows.Please tell me what are the guide lines to get accurate locations on a fast moving trains. The ZXing app uses the pictures that it gets from the camera preview. But these pictures do not have a very good quality. Is there any possibility to make the camera preview making better quality pictures? P.S. I also tried to make real snapshots with camera.takePicture() to get a better quality, but it takes too long to take the picture so the real time experience for the user is lost. Hi all, what is the recommended way to evaluate the current screens width and height? Currently I'm using the WindowManager class but it returns the correct size only when display is in landscape mode. In case it is rotated to portrait mode returned screen width and height are equal (which is not correct on an 4:3 display). I just finished 200 video tutorials on Android programming and started
experimenting with what I learned.
I am trying to set Button color in java and found that I can reliably
set them in the onCreate() constructor but not later in the program.
I created a fun little class of 5 buttons where each button click sets
the colors separately.
Setting the button color like this:

The buttons colors do not reliably change simply by clicking the color
change button.
But I can force it to appear by manipulating the phone like this:
After clicking on a button to change the color, I can click on a
TextView widget to get the keyboard to appear on the screen and then
press the menu back button and the colors for the buttons I set are
properly refreshed.
It appears I need a display refresh or something like VB.NET's
Application.DoEvents()
Got any ideas?

Hi, In general, there is no open api available for this. The user has to enter the phone number, and a typical method of verifying the phone number is to send an authentication code via SMS, and verify the code in some manner. Arun. Why do you need this? Are you trying to uniquely identify individual installs? If so, what will you do if your user doesn't have a SIM in his phone, or is on a tablet? Search the list. Identifying installs uniquely has been discussed before. FYI, to see if the carrier stores the number on your SIM, go to Settings - About Phone - Status - My phone Number (In ICS. Other versions may vary slightly.) If it displays unknown there, then your number is not stored on the SIM. [android-developers] Opening file when download completes
I'm downloading a file using the DownloadManager. I'm receiving the ACTION_DOWNLOAD_COMPLETE broadcast but I'm having trouble opening the file. I'm creating a ACTION_VIEW intent with the data set to the Uri I get from the getUriFromDownloadedFile method and the type set to the String I get from the getMimeTypeFromDownloadedFile method. I'm able to start the activity to open the file, but the app is not able to open it. I know the file is being downloaded correctly because I can go to my list of downloads and open it from there. Any idea of what I'm doing wrong? I am trying to make this simple app. Any help would be appreciated,

What I want it to do.
1: Show a clickable image ( imageButton)
2:When clicked change imageButton to second image.
3:Then play a sound.
4:Wait a few seconds ( I have been using thread sleep() )
5:Change image back to the original picture.
Sounds simple right?
Well what I am getting is this.
1: Show a clickable image ( imageButton)

3:Waits a few seconds.
4:Then sets the imageButton to original. ( I know this part happens
because I tried 3 pictures. A starting image, photo2 and last photo1
as a test to see if it was even trying to change the imageButton)
The first Image change ( step 2) never happens , even though when I
step through the app with a debugger it shows it going to that point.

One of the applications that I building requires generating a local SMS on the phone and injecting it into the message store so that the user perceives that he has received a new SMS. One of the usecases that need this is the capability to transfer a SMS message over bluetooth from one phone to another and then show as if it was a newly received SMS message. Hi all. I have a set of assets in my drawable-hdpi folder, which have generally been designed using an 800 * 480 template. My new device, plus many others, are now using a 960 * 540 layout, which still takes the assets from the same hdpi folder. This is generally ok, but the image sizes are reduced somewhat, with a lot more spacing between them. For android versions less then 3.x, can I specify a different set of assets for these two (and other) sizes, within the hdpi range? [android-developers] It is possible to avoid the SO to close a non visible activity?
Hi I have an activity non visible, with some variables that must be accesed by static way. This activity can't be a service, because it is a MapView activity. I need to access some static varibales of the activity anytime. I know that the SO can close suspended activities (non visible activities) so how can i avoid it? i need that my suspended non visible activitity never get's deleted by the SO. Do you have this problem when you scroll in the list? If yes, then it's probable that the checkboxes on different rows are the same object (e.g. row 1 and row 7 for example). Great work. Obviously there is something wrong with the compilation. Have you tried to connect in debug mode the phone to a computer with Android Development Tools and see what the traces look like. They may offer a clue. My suspicion is that NfcService is crashing. I will review my notes tomorrow if I find something different to the steps you followed to build the image.
