[android-developers] Hiding the folders in internal storage

2016-07-02 Thread G. Gowtham
Hi,

I am trying to show only certain folders to the external world when my app
is running. Other folders must be hidden even when the device is connected
to windows PC. I tried changing the folder name with .(dot) in front, it
hides the folders in the device but when connected to pc it is of no use.
Is there any way to do the same?

Thanks,
Gowtham G

[android-developers] how to create custom sdk library with 3rd libraries in android?

2016-06-18 Thread lokesh g

down votefavorite

I'm using android studio 1.5 and i'm creating general sdk library like
paypal/facebook sdk, this plugin include 3rd party library like QRcode
scanner, okhttp for networking. Once i include in these plugins inside
custom library gradle file it's working fine in the same project structure,
But when i try to include custom sdk library to other android application
the above 3rd party plugins not included in the final custom library sdk so
how can i build the custom android sdk library with 3rd party libraries.

[android-developers] Server side validation of Google Quests.

2016-06-10 Thread Jimmy G
I've been using GoogleAuthUtils to request a token for "Offline Access"
(scopes: "https://www.googleapis.com/auth/games";
and "https://www.googleapis.com/auth/plus.login";) which seems entirely
ridiculous when I only need my server to look at the user's list of quests,
determine if it's complete, and then extract the rewards blob from it. I'm
wondering if there is any better way to do this?

[android-developers] Google Play Services not compatible with Galaxy S4 Mini (v4.4.4)

2016-05-30 Thread 'Baudouin G' via Android Developers
Summary of the problem:

My phone is a Galaxy S4 Mini SHV-E370K (K-Telecom, Korea)
After the battery was killed by the "Touchwiz has stoped and recovered" bug
(thank you Android, it is a know issue ..), I have re-rotted my phone to
factory default.
I have make OS update up to Kitkat 4.4.4 which is the latest version
available for this phone.

When I want to load Youtube or some other applications, it request me to
update my Google Play Services.
If I try to update the later, the messge is "Your Device isn't compatible
with this version"
So I cannot update to GP services to the latest v7.3.
I have installed GP version for 4.4.4 via an APK for GP v6.5.85
(1589008-036) via APKMirror.com

Means I am blocked and I cannot use even Youtube/Google Maps on my
smartphone!
Thank you Google, this is a 2 years old phone and you have decided not to
support it anymore?

I have uninstalled GP Services and installed it again.
I have cleared cache.

I have two solutions:
- Buy a new Android phone (or why not try Apple?)
- Find a Custom Root that could work
=>

[android-developers] Re: Usb problems

2016-04-23 Thread Nancy G
If you've recently updated to Android 6.0, it's set to charge only and now
you have to enable data transfer. Is this what you mean, or is it not
charging?

[android-developers] Must Enable Location to use Bluetooth and WiFi Background Scanning: Android API 23 Hardware Identifiers Changes

Am I correct in understanding that now every app that should be granted
Bluetooth permission will now require location permission as well,
defeating the purpose of granular permissions?

Is there some other way to allow Bluetooth permission without requiring a
user to grant my app location permission? My app wouldn't require location
permission if not for this change, so I would want to make sure if it ever
*does *access location*, *that it can only do so when the app is active.
Won't I still be able to access location info when the app isn't being used?

[android-developers] Re: Chmod failed: EPERM (Operation not permitted)

2016-03-01 Thread Michael G
This was a problem with chmod'ing external storage files once upzipped. I'm
not sure why this would have ever worked even on lower apis though. It
doesnt make sense that you can chmod something not in its own private user
space, i.e. public external storage. However, the python executables in
private space are okay to chmod the files. ( fyi: the chmod technique that
damon came up with for this was never google/android official )

There does not need to be any modification of privileges on these files
once unzipped for the python interpreter to use for imports.

I fixed this bug by modifying the Utils and ScriptActivity java files. You
will no longer get the EPERM errors on install. I forked this project and
added the PIE executables too so this you can run python apks on api 5.0 or
greater now.

my repos is here : https://github.com/ainsophical/droid-python

I am developing an Android Wear application that implements the Moto 360 heart

I have used following things in my code:
1. Network provider.
2. Gps.
3. Fused location.

Re: [android-developers] Re: Sync Adapter - Syncs frequently

2014-07-24 Thread G. Blake Meike
Deepak,
Not sure if it will help, but I have a minimal SyncAdapter that, on both
my phone and on a Genymotion emulator, syncs about every 20 minutes (which
is a bit odd, because it is nominally scheduled every 15 minutes).

The docs are, to this day, nearly useless. The example program is so full
of bugs (not the least of which is that the schedule interval is off by 3
orders of magnitude!) Apparently, the order in which you call the
ContentResolver methods and the actual account creation, are also
significant.

In L, the whole SyncAdapter will be rewritten as a specialization of the
JobScheduler. That should be much better.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Re: [android-developers] Re: Sync Adapter - Syncs frequently

2014-07-23 Thread G. Blake Meike
I glanced through them and it all looks pretty good to me. If you are sure
that you are never calling notifyChanged with the third arg = true, the
only thing I can suggest is that, somehow, you have setSyncAutomatically =
true.

Pretty mysterious.

Sorry, missed the note that you were passing "false" in the original.

Have you checked to see that none of your calls are failing due to missing

Do you have any calls to ContentResolver.notifyChange() in your app? If

[android-developers] Re: two activities running at same time

2013-04-03 Thread g...@deanblakely.com
Since I started this thread I thought I would post a follow up now that I
have finished and published the app.

My app is a broadcast listener that kicks off on receipt of an SMS
message. Under the right conditions it launches an activity that runs for
30 seconds getting reading from a location listener. It then sends results
back to the sender containing the desired data and finishes.

I have tested it while the target phone is running all sorts of apps such
as a continual animation test app, talking on the phone, taking pictures,
an app in a timer loop timing each execution. Even my other app that uses
location listener constantly was not affected. I've done this on phones
running 2.33 to 4.2.

None of these tests even noticed my app executing. It's a free app
"WhereAreMyKids Trial". Have a look yourself. It's on Google Play.

AsyncTasks are (pretty much) managed Runnables. Use loaders if you can.

[android-developers] Http Post failing on only one phone

2013-03-19 Thread g...@deanblakely.com

The code pasted below has been successfully tested on several phones
running Gingerbread, ICS, and Jelly Bean. However when testing on a
friends Samsung 4GLTE model SCH-1200 (verison) the code fails.
The post throws an exception and in the Catch, the log throws a null

I examined the contents of the myPost and it all looks valid.

What could be wrong with this phone? Could the owner have something turned

[android-developers] Re: Can this variable become null?

2013-03-17 Thread G. Blake Meike
@Lew on 3/14: +many Why, oh why, do people insist on lazy initialization?

A lot of the debate about singletons ignores specifics. I bet nobody has a
problem with:

public static final String MY_CONSTANT = "CONSTANT";

That's a singleton. Singletons that are mutable are weirder. Lazily
initialized singletons that are mutable are the devil's tools.

Further, as I point out here:

http://portabledroid.wordpress.com/2012/05/04/singletons-in-android/

"Singleton" is a relative term. There is nearly no such thing as a
singleton (well, maybe the earth, or the sun, or something like that).
There are only singletons in context. I have come to see many of the
problem devs have with singletons not as a discussion of singletons
themselves, but as a misunderstanding of the context in which they are
singletons.

Mark,
not sure what you mean. If the user runs the app, it's a FlashLight app
where the user can turn on the led to find his way around in the dark. If
the app is kicked off by a sms message it does a completely different
thing. I have installed the app, never ran the flashlight, sent a sms
message and it works.

My android phone number is 5209791360. Send it a sms message containg &&&
only. You should get back the location.

The last para of the posting that TreKing cites gives the answer: in old
versions of Android, the Apache libs worked better. In post HC, the Java

[android-developers] two activities running at same time

2013-02-28 Thread g...@deanblakely.com
I have an app with a main activity that has no visible interface
(android:theme="@android:style/Theme.NoDisplay). The app is started by
receipt of an SMS message in a BroadCast activity which kicks off another
activity (also no GUI) that does work and then sends an SMS message. It
works very well; actually better than I had expected because it runs even
if other apps are running a foreground activity.

Now I'm familiar with the Android Activity Lifecycle but I guess this means
that Android (I'm using 2.33) can run "many" activities "at once." Even
when I'm running a very active GPS tracking application that is writing
layers on a mapview, my "no-display" app starts does his work and sends the
results out on an SMS message. The tracking app that was running never
even blinked.

I don't have any problem (at least not programming related), I'm just
curious why this works.
Regards,
Gary

[android-developers] Re: OnTouch events!!!!

2013-02-27 Thread G. Blake Meike
I think you need a state machine. The behavior of your onTouch will be
determined by what the user does and the current state. That will, in
turn, change the state.

[android-developers] Google Play Licensing Testing Problem

2013-02-15 Thread g...@deanblakely.com

I think I have a "catch-22" problem with Google Play Licensing.

1. My Android device account must be setup with a Gmail email address. I
used deanblakelyu...@gmail.com.

2. I setup my Developer Console (DC) with my real email address (
g...@deanblakely.com)

3. My DC will only send test responses to devices having accounts with
g...@deanblakely.com. (see graphic below)

4. Although I changed the email in my DC "account profile" DC is still
using g...@deanblakely.com.

So, my problem is : DC apparently won't let a developer change his email
address. The graphic below shows that the license testing is looking for
messages from devices having g...@deanblakely.com as their email address
(which is impossible becasue of my point #1 above)

Can someone please help me get out of this mess?.

BTW I always get back NOT_MARKET_MANAGED.

Thanks, Gary

[android-developers] Re: Cannot import from Google Play Licensing Library

2013-02-13 Thread g...@deanblakely.com
The problem was bad google docs at
http://developer.android.com/google/play/licensing/adding-licensing.html#imports

The import must say com.google.android.vending.licensing. The docs didn't
have the 'google' qualifier in it.

Google docs are really bad, this has happened probably a dozen times. I
think it's because they change so much they don't budget enough to keep the
docs up.

[android-developers] Cannot import from Google Play Licensing Library

2013-02-13 Thread g...@deanblakely.com
I'm trying to add licensing to my app using info from
http://developer.android.com/google/play/licensing/adding-licensing.html#impl-DeviceLimiter.

Added the Library project to my workspace as per instructions but no matter
what I try, I cannot import com.android.vending.licensing. (see graphic
below).

This is keeping me from puting my app on the Google Play market. Help!

[android-developers] Google Play Licensing documentation issue

2013-02-12 Thread g...@deanblakely.com
Im trying to implement licensing for my app and I'm following the docs at
http://developer.android.com/google/play/licensing/index.html#test-env
but I'm finding it very challenging. For instance...

The section pasted below says that we should "sign in to our publisher
account" (do they mean developer console??) and click "Edit Profile". The
developer console does not have such a section but I find that if I go to
the "old design" there is a Edit Profile link. That takes me to an area
that says "we've Moved" and that i should go back to the new
design/Services and API's. I go back there but the functionality described
in the paste below is not there.

So, it's not clear how I tell Google Play Licensing what responses I want
in my test. This is just one example.

I tried to implement the "Sample" but it won't compile due to errors. (I
have another post on SO) on that issue.

Is there any decent documentation on this?
Thanks, Gary

[android-developers] problem getting Google API V1 key

2013-02-09 Thread g...@deanblakely.com

I have an app that uses Google maps API v1 that I'm trying to generate a
release version for. I'm having a problem getting the MD5 Fingerprint I
need for my google release key.

I have a Debug google api v1 key that I got back when I began writing the
app. Everything works fine in debug mode.

To sign the app I created a keystore file by running the following
command...

keytool -genkey -v -keystore DBAPhoneStalker-release-key.keystore -alias
myAlias -keyalg RSA -keysize 2048 -validity 1

Then I exported the release .apk from eclipse, put it on my phone and it
runs very well (once I learned how to bypass ProGuard) execept, of course,
the map tiles don't show on the MapView because I'm running with the debug
Google maps key.

So now I want to get an MD5 fingerprint, so I run the following command

keytool -list -alias myAlias -keystore DBAPhoneStalker-release-key.keystore

After entering my password, the keystore program proceeds to give me an SHA
fingerprint!! I need an MD5 fingerprint. Why is this happening?

BTW, I'm following th docs at
https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/android/v1/mapkey

Thanks, Gary
