[android-developers] SSLProtocolException on Droid RAZR MAXX HD using Android 4.0.4

2012-10-31 Thread John Lussmyer
I have a customer that is getting an SSLProtocolException in our app.
There are thousands of other phones working just fine with this version of
our code and server.

This is called from an HttpResponse, method writeTo( OutputStream).

The only reports of a similar error I've found were from android 2.3.3, and
supposedly that was fixed.
Any ideas?

[android-developers] Layouts and Animation

2012-03-18 Thread John Lussmyer
I need to setup an Activity that when a certain button is pressed, a widget

I haven't been able to find an example of how you setup a layout to have
the widget off-screen before the animation, and stay on-screen after the
animation.
Anyone know of an example?

[android-developers] Bluetooth getting Not able to register SDP record - why?

2011-02-01 Thread John Lussmyer
All of a sudden my little Bluetooth app is getting an IOException: Not able
to register SDP record for name
name is the name I passed to:

tmp = mAdapter.listenUsingRfcommWithServiceRecord(NAME,
MY_UUID);

This code has been working fine for several days. Now it gets that
exception EVERY time. It doesn't matter if the bluetooth device is on or
off.
No code changes.

After rebooting my phone, it started working again.
So, it seems that I must not be calling a close() (or somesuch). Does that
exception somehow indicate what I'm doing wrong?

I wrapped the TextView in a ScrollView (even though TextView is documented

This let me call the fullScroll( View.FOCUS_DOWN) method in the ScrollView

I haven't used it for Android, but usually there is a Scrollable container
that lets you put things into it that are larger than the screen. There
 must
be such a widget... check the methods. I imagine that you can set the
 scroll
 position programmatically.

Re: [android-developers] Re: writing an Authenticator to use with AccountManager

2011-01-17 Thread John Lussmyer
Back to this question again.
As I said in my original message, I'm working from the SampleSyncAdapter
example program.
Currently, it mostly works, but I don't understand the flow of control, OR
how to do certain operations.

Currently, if I start my app on a clean emulator, it prompts me for the
userid/password and connects to my server.
That works.
Now, I want to be able to Logoff, so that the next time the app tries to
access the server, the user will be prompted for Userid/Password again.
That doesn't work.
It seems to go into an infinite loop in my code calling
AccountManager.getAuthToken(), which invokes my run( AccountManagerFuture)
method, but since the token is null (actually, so it account name and type),
it gets the Account using getAccountsByType(), and calls
AccountManager.getAuthToken()  again

So, I'm definitely doing something wrong, and it would be helpful if I could
find a good description of how the Account system actually works.

Re: [android-developers] WallpaperManager.sendWallpaperCommand() doesn't work?

2011-01-14 Thread John Lussmyer
Thanks for the clarification.
So the statement Finally, applications can send arbitrary commands to the
live wallpaper. is just plain wrong in the documentation at:
http://developer.android.com/resources/articles/live-wallpapers.html

On Fri, Jan 14, 2011 at 5:38 AM, String sterling.ud...@googlemail.comwrote:

 I think you're misunderstanding Dianne's posts.

When most people (including you, I think) talk about the wallpaper, they
mean the one on the home screen. The app that's running that wallpaper is
the Launcher, and so the Launcher is the only app which can send commands to
 the wallpaper as defined above.

Separate from this, it's also possible - though rare - for other apps to
use wallpapers as their own background. If your app is doing this, then it
can send commands to THAT wallpaper.

In no circumstance, AFAIK, can an app which isn't the Launcher (or a
replacement) send commands to the wallpaper running on the device's home
screen. The documentation is not at all clear on this, but I've been down
this road in the past. If you want to ping your own wallpaper (running on
the home screen) from your app, one method which does work is to fire off a
custom intent, and listen for that intent in your WallpaperService.

Re: [android-developers] WallpaperManager.sendWallpaperCommand() doesn't work?

2011-01-14 Thread John Lussmyer
Thanks. Another point where the documentation could use some updating.

On Fri, Jan 14, 2011 at 9:36 AM, Dianne Hackborn hack...@android.comwrote:

No, that is not true. Launcher does not own the wallpaper. It uses
Theme.Wallpaper to have itself displayed on top of the wallpaper -- that is,
its own window has translucency so you can see the wallpaper surface (owned
by the current wallpaper) behind it. During this time, it is allowed to
interact with the wallpaper (change its offset, send commands, etc) only
because it is currently the app on top of the wallpaper.

If your own app is running on top of the wallpaper in the same way, then
you too can interact with it. If not, you can't. If this wasn't the cause,
no launcher replacements would be able to interact with the wallpaper
 either.

[android-developers] WallpaperManager.sendWallpaperCommand() doesn't work?

2011-01-13 Thread John Lussmyer
I just noticed this method, and since I have a Live Wallpaper I've written,
I decided it might be fun to use this.

So in one of my apps, it checks to see if my Live Wallpaper is the current
wallpaper, and sends a command if it is.
I get no errors in the log, but the wallpaper never receives the command.
(There are logging statements in the onCommand() handler.)

Is there some permission or other settings I have to enable to get this to
work?

I eventually got it to work - mostly. I had to download the HTC Sync app

resembles what you actually see in the SDK Manager tool, or the Win 7

SDKManager has downloaded the Google Usb Driver package, revision 4 - to

Pointing Device Manager at the root of the android SDK dir, it couldn't
 find a USB driver.

[android-developers] Making a file world writeable

2011-01-13 Thread John Lussmyer
I have an app that is writing a file that I would like other apps to be able
to access.
Looking at it in DDMS, I see that it's permissions only let the one user see
it.
The docs at
http://developer.android.com/reference/java/io/File.html#setWritable%28boolean,%20boolean%29
show that the File object should have a setWriteable() method.

That method doesn't seem to exist. At least Eclipse won't let me use it
without flagging it as a syntax error, and it doesn't appear in the popup
list of methods on a File object.

So, is there some other way to make the file world writeable?
I can't use OpenFileOutput() since that doesn't allow path separator
characters.

Re: [android-developers] Re: Sharing data between apps

2011-01-13 Thread John Lussmyer
And that is a very nice philosophical discussion of data in general.

Still doesn't help any with my original question, and the only implication I
can take from it is that you are assuming I'm a total neophyte programmer
who has no idea what his data is going to be used for, or what it is.
How nice.

Now, if you actually assume that I'm not an idiot, and actually know what my
own data is, that it is 10 bytes, and I'm asking for ways to transfer it -
then your discussion of data meanings makes even less sense. I wasn't
asking about how to decode my data, how to use it, how to make it work with
another system. I was asking for ways of sharing a block of generic data
between apps.
ALL data is generic. Higher meanings can be applied at either end of it's
travels, which may also have implications about requirements for it's
travel.
It's still data.

On Thu, Jan 13, 2011 at 8:36 PM, Bob Kerns r...@acm.org wrote:

 You weren't paying attention.

I was using illustrative examples, chosen mostly for 10-byte -- but
these issues show up all the time in all kinds of programming, from
enterprise to consumer utilities, to games.

And you didn't say that 10 bytes is just 10 bytes for Android, but not
for safety systems like cars, airplanes, and medical. But that fits
nicely with my last point about valuable data vs worthless data.

The first pair illustrates that it matters both how quickly and how
reliably data is delivered. To take an example from an entirely
different domain -- this is why there is UDP vs TCP. Or consider the
implications for delays or unreliable delivery if you're downloading a
 program, vs watching a video.

The second pair illustrates that the actual byte values to be
delivered may need to be mapped as part of the delivery. Earth surface
coordinates, sure, those transfer fine. But often this is not the
case; often to be useful on the other end, you will have to
externalize those bytes in some manner. To offer another example --
raw sensor data may need to be calibrated, referenced, or normalized
to be useful when transferred from one device to another. This may
only be possible on the source device.

Two different ways that the byte MEANING matters -- both DIRECTLY
related to how data is delivered.

But to quote Mark: ...but you are certainly welcome to your opinion.

(I've also set both apps to have the same uid in their manifest files.)

Context context =
this.createPackageContext(com.casadelgato.lifewallpaper, 0);
SharedPreferences wPrefs =
context.getSharedPreferences(Constants.LW_SHARED_PREFS, 0);
Editor editor = wPrefs.edit();
editor.putBoolean(Constants.PREF_RANDCOLORS,
engine.isRandColors());
etc...

When I try, I get:

Figured it out.
Apparently, even though you are allowed to getFilesDir(), you aren't allowed

Intuitively obvious that isn't.

[android-developers] Sharing data between apps

2011-01-12 Thread John Lussmyer
I've been looking to see if there is a relatively simple way for 2 apps to
share a tiny bit of data.
So far, I haven't found any.

1) SharedPreferences - aren't shared.
2) MemoryFile in Shared Memory - there appears to be no way to share these
between apps.
3) Internal Storage - separate apps can't write to each others area, even if
they have the same userid.
4) External storage - may not exist.

So, in order to send 10 bytes of data to another app, it seems that I'll
have to create a new Activity and have it respond to an Intent().
Is that really the only way to do this?

android:name=android.intent.category.CATEGORY_DEFAULT

You need category_default in the intent filter of your activity for launch

AFAIK, they can. What proof do you have to the contrary? Not that this
is particularly a good strategy for SDK apps, mind you.

You can't specify a path in the call to openFileOutput(). (Fails if there
are any path separators)
Hard to specify another apps directory if you can't use path separators.

So, in order to send 10 bytes of data to another app, it seems that I'll
have to create a new Activity and have it respond to an Intent().

That is not the proper use of an Activity.

Is that really the only way to do this?

-- Create a service, exposing an API through AIDL, consumed via
 bindService()

-- Create a service, exposing an API through an Intent (sent via
startService()) and returning results via a Messenger, or
 createPendingResult()'s PendingIntent, etc.

 -- Create a content provider

There may be other options depending on what the 10 bytes of data
actually is, but those should get you started.

10 bytes of data is 10 bytes of data. 10 binary bytes. Not text.
Only needs to be transferred occasionally, but does need to be transferred.

So, what you are saying is there is NO easy way to transfer a tiny bit of
data.
App X just needs to send it to App Y when the user does certain actions.
sigh.
(In this case there are 2 apps, either of which can be used independently,
but if both are on the phone, they can work together.)

A SharedPreference would have been perfect - but the Shared prefix seems
to have a different meaning than what you would think.

[android-developers] Getting phone to work with debugger

I've just gotten an HTC Aria. I've been unable to get ADB to recognize that

ADB finds my Motorola Backflip just fine.
The Aria does have the USB Debugging enabled.
I've tried following the instructions at
http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/device.html and
http://developer.android.com/sdk/win-usb.html , but of course, neither one
resembles what you actually see in the SDK Manager tool, or the Win 7
control panel.
SDKManager has downloaded the Google Usb Driver package, revision 4 - to
some place, but I have no idea where.
Pointing Device Manager at the root of the android SDK dir, it couldn't find
a USB driver.

Only people at Google and Jesus know the answer to that and neither one is
going to give you a definitive answer.

A lot of people have reported that their free / paid apps are not related
according to the Market, despite near-identical descriptions. It's probably
yet-another-bug in the Market regarding this feature.

Update your app along with the description(s) might help. Or just waiting

[android-developers] DROID sound playing problem

2011-01-04 Thread John Lussmyer
I have a customer with a DROID phone. It's showing a rather odd symptom.
I have 2 sounds that play at regular (but different) intervals in my app.
One of them plays every time.
The other (more frequent) plays every other time. I've put tracing in the
code, and I AM calling MediaPlayer.start() every time. No exceptions are
being thrown. It just only plays the sound every other time.
This also only happens for one specific sound file. (they are all very short
.mp3's)
This works just fine in both the emulator and my Backflip.

Any ideas on what I should look for?

[android-developers] Making my app a library, resource problems

2011-01-02 Thread John Lussmyer
Okay, in order to make it easier (I hope) to have both a Licensed full
version, and a Demo version of my app, I've converted my App project in
Eclipse into an Android Library project.
I created a new Library project, the copied all the source and resources
over, set the manifest values, etc...
I then created a new App project to be the licensed version. It uses the
library project.

What I'm seeing is that the App project builds a R.java for both the App and
the Library. BUT it builds the one for the library incorrectly. It's
leaving out several resources from my portrait layout.
When the Library project is build, it's R.java has all the resources.

Note:
It's also interesting that the App project builds an R.java for the App, and
an R.java for the Library project - and they are IDENTICAL.
This also indicates that you have to be really careful about not having
conflicting resource names between and App and a Library it uses.

Re: [android-developers] Re: the new eclipse UI design - absolute frustration and waste of time

2010-12-31 Thread John Lussmyer
I've used the NetBeans and MyEclipse GUI editors extensively. They are very
nice.
The Android thing in Eclipse is pretty much a waste of time. Bizarre things
happen when you try to drag controls or layouts in. Items end up in totally
unexpected places, with attributes that you can't seem to control. The huge
properties menu isn't very helpful either.

After just a few minutes of attempting to use the GUI editor, I gave up and
just edited the XML directly. Much easier, quicker, and with better control
of what you get. I don't even bother previewing my layouts with the GUI
editor, as it frequently leaves out controls entirely.

On Thu, Dec 30, 2010 at 6:15 PM, Zsolt Vasvari zvasv...@gmail.com wrote:

Totally agree. If you use XML, you will actually understand what's
going on instead of relying on a GUI editor to do the work for you.

drag and drop a single control with the editor.

[android-developers] Licensing Verification Library and Demo versions

Is there a relatively easy/good way to have an app that uses LVL, also have

It appears that I have to change the Package Name to do this - which changes

Note that I am working from within Eclipse.

Should I make my entire app an Android Library? and just have 2 nearly
empty skeleton projects to build it? (Free and Paid versions)

[android-developers] Possible bug when trying to re-use an animation.

2010-12-28 Thread John Lussmyer
I just ran into a problem that I'm pretty sure is a bug in the Animation
class.
I have a simple Animation that doesn't repeat.
I use view.setAnimation() to run it.
When it's done, I use view.clearAnimation();

Sometime later, I want to run it again. So I use view.setAnimation()
again. The view flickers and nothing happens.
So I did some poking around to see what was happening. (One useful
diagnostic was that I created an AnimationWrapper that just logs when every
Animation method is called.)
View calls Animation.reset(), then starts using the Animation.
The problem is that Animation.reset() does NOT reset the animation start
time. So when the animation starts, the time is long past the animation
expiration, so it stops immediately.

Workaround: call Animation.setStartTime( -1) before you call
view.setAnimation().
Fix: Animation.reset() should set mStartTime = -1;

Re: [android-developers] Animation problem

2010-12-28 Thread John Lussmyer
You may want to set the setFillBefore and/or setFillAfter values. (one of
them defaults to true, the other to false.)

 Hello,
I'm new here and I don't know if this is the right place for my
problem. Please excuse me if it's wrong.
I want to create a scale animation where a view grows a bit from it's
original size and then shrinks to it's old size.

Re: [android-developers] RelativeLayout problems

2010-12-27 Thread John Lussmyer
I fixed the id problem that was pointed out by the previous reply. It made
no difference.

 John,

 Two suggestions:

1 - When your app suspends like this, it means it's crashing, but hasn't
quite crashed all the way yet, which is why there is no logcat output at
 that point.

Click 'resume execution' in Eclipse, and again if necessary. You only get
logcat output (and the close dialog on the device) once the exception has
propagated to the top-level exception handler.

I tried clicking on resume. Twice. The app exited, the debugger
disconnected from the Emulator, and still no logcat output.

2 - Logcat window in Eclipse is very nice (filtering, color highlighting),
 but just too small.

Not on my screen. I re-arranged the tabs in Eclipse, and have a 24
1920x1200 monitor.

Re: [android-developers] Getting the Android Java source?

If you are getting this in Eclipse, then your problem is with Eclipse
and the ADT plugin. BridgeXmlBlockParser is related to the layout
preview/drag-and-drop stuff, near as I can tell via Google Code
 Search.

If you have not done so already, restart Eclipse and see if that
helps. Beyond that, particularly since I am not an Eclipse user, I
 have no particular advice.

I've restarted Eclipse, multiple times.
This appears to have something to do with a Custom widget I have in my XML
file.
I'd really like the Java source so I can see what Eclipse is choking on.
