[android-developers] Marketplace Questions
I've just published my first paid app, a 'Pro' version of my free app. I've got two things I'm trying to understand: 1) One my users is from Israel and he says that his order cannot be processed. Google says that the credentials are incorrect. Do I need to do something special to allow international puchases? 2) Google says 4 installs but 0 active installs. But I see that I successfully processed some orders. Isn't an active install one that is being used - ergo one that was paid for? Thanks. ...Jake -- Jake Colman -- Android Tinkerer -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group. You don't, it's automatic (as long as you don't exclude countries in the Market console). Declined transactions are a frequent occurrence (I see about 10% for in-app billing), often with the wonderfully clear message we could not process the order in a timely fashion. 2) Google says 4 installs but 0 active installs. But I see that I successfully processed some orders. Isn't an active install one that is being used - ergo one that was paid for? The numbers don't update immediately - when they update at all. [android-developers] Marketplace download failure -- anybody else seen this?
I've had a couple users say they can't download two of my apps. The apps are 1.2 to 2.3Mb in size and the users seemed to imply that the size was an issue since they could download smaller apps ok. One user has a Cliq, not sure of the others. I told them to clear the cache and data in the Market and Download manager apps, but the one that tried that says no joy -- it didn't work. Should they force close the Market app Download Manager too? Is there something else to try? I've uninstalled, downloaded and installed both apps onto my Nexus One...everything's fine. [android-developers] Marketplace updates - notified if apk not installed through marketplace?
Hi, I created a signed apk. I uploaded it to marketplace as usual. I also installed a copy of it on a device directly, perhaps as an email attachment. If I upload an updated version of the app to the marketplace, will the device be notified that a new version of the app exists on marketplace? Or does that update-alert system depend on the app being originally installed through marketplace? Re: [android-developers] Marketplace updates - notified if apk not installed through marketplace?
Notifications are only shown for apps installed through Market. (Don't know what you mean about this rarely working, I am not aware of an issue there, and do get notifications all the time for apps installed on my phone. Though less now that I have many to auto-install.) As long as the app on market is signed with the same cert as the one that is side-loaded, installing it from market should work and replace the previously installed one. Re: [android-developers] Marketplace updates - notified if apk not installed through marketplace?
I have definitely seen the first issue, at least on 2.1. Seems like the notification pops up only when I run the Market - don't have to check for anything but the very act of running the Market seems to trigger a check on the number of updates available. This seems to be the case on 2.2 as well at least the first time I am checking this - right now I had to go to Downloads within Market to see that there is an update though I must caveat this is for a component used by an app (EStrongs File Explorer's Task Manager) as opposed to an app itself. Don't know if that matters. Not seen issue 2. [android-developers] Marketplace behavior when version is wrong.
All - I am wondering how the marketplace handles a specific situation. Assume I write an app that is for 2.1 and up. I then put a market:// link on my web page that advertises the app. A user with a version lower than 2.1 comes to my web page and clicks the link, which in turn causes the marketplace to open up and try to find the app. What does the user see? Are they just told the app isn't found? Are they told it isn't supported on their version of Android? Or do they get some other error? Has anyone tried this? (I know I could publish a quick 'Hello World' app and find out, but I figured I would ask first. ;) Thanks! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group. [android-developers] marketplace + chrome
I finally started using Google Chrome last week. I'm not an early adopter for most software, but I thought perhaps the major bugs had been worked out at this point. So today I went to the Android Marketplace to upload a new version of my app. Strangest thing.. I was unable to click on the [ Upload Upgrade ] link. I restarted Chrome to make sure it wasn't a fluke thing, still didn't work. I then opened the About Chrome dialog and let it check for an update. It said I was good to go. Maybe it's the horrible Marketplace code, maybe it's Chrome, who knows. So as my teenage daughter might say, Google, would you like some epic with that fail? :) Firefox to the rescue. -- Greg Donald destiney.com | gregdonald.com -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group. [android-developers] marketplace linking - any way to track referrals ?
Hi, I'd like to know if a user downloaded my app from marketplace via a referral from another app. Example: Color Meter is an app which analyzes colors in an image. The user can download my advanced camera app, Super Camera, which works well with Color Meter, and is suggested by the Color Meter author via a button in their app. If the user chooses to click that button, market place launches, directed to the Super Camera page. The user may download Super Camera. But there is no way for me to know that this user downloaded Super Camera via a button from the Color Meter app vs. a random search they made themselves. [android-developers] Marketplace - Posting questions before purchase would be beneficial!
(please note, I was originally told by an android dev via twitter to place my suggestion in b.android.com, but as I went over there and started a new post the form was autofilled w/ info saying b.android.com was primarily for bug reporting, and it gave me the url of this google group for suggestions) I am starting to see screenshots of the new marketplace, with the ability for developers to upload screenshots, wonderful! How about an ability for users to ask questions about the application, and anybody who downloaded the application can answer them? For example, if a user is interested in buying an application, but wants to know something further (to facilitate the process of deciding to purchase the app or not), s/he can post a short question(s) through the Marketplace interface. The developer or other people who purchased the application (don't let anybody who didn't purchase it write a response, same way only people who downloaded/purchased an app can rate/review) can respond. It can be kept in threaded mode, and available only through a few keystrokes (so it isn't on every product page in the marketplace and does not slow the user experience) It would help to increase the value of the marketplace by giving more relevant info and facilitating the process of sales - right now when I see a product on the marketplace available for purchase (NOT free download) I do an extensive google/web search to find out more information, and sometimes I don't even find the information i'm looking for! When new products hit the marketplace and are less than 72hours old there is hardly any information on exterior websites. So I personally decide against purchasing an application if I have a question that goes unanswered (yes, while it is possible to purchase an app and return it 24 hours later, there are people like me who will not purchase - return - purchase - return applications an exaggerated amount of times)which I was previously interested in buying. Any sort of interaction that potential customers can have with _guaranteed_ customers of the application - in one centralized easy location (instead of the dozens of forums and fan sites that have sprung up in the last year) would increase the value of marketplace, applications, and user experience a hundredfold! [android-developers] Marketplace Questions

[android-developers] Marketplace
I'm curious what the deal is with the Android Marketplace. It seems like: - You can't browse it or download apk files in the marketplace from a desktop computer. Just previews of a few apps. - Marketplace is not installed in the emulator in the sdk - Can't find anything on how to install it - I've heard that people who are unlocking their G1 phones to use on ATT can't access the marketplace. All of these points could be confusion on my part as a newbie to the Android development world. So if these points are really correct could someone please explain why all the restrictions and/or point me toward some documentation regarding the reason and policies? If I'm wrong can someone please explain a)Where can I browse the marketplace from a normal desktop and/or b)where can I get and apk I can install in the emulator to browse the marketplace. [android-developers] Marketplace --Demo vs Full Version--
Hello all, I have an app on the marketplace right now that is doing fairly well. When paid apps arrive, I'd like to change a few variables in my code and republish the code so a 'demo' and a 'full' version exists. I did some experimenting with this about a month ago and I'd like to get some input. If I change the folder structure from, com-mydomain-myapp to com - mydomain - myapp_full_version will the marketplace then recognize as a fully independent application? I tried changing the package name in the workspace and tweaking the manifest, but the marketplace transferred everything over and it wasn't seen as a 'new and separate' program.
