FYI its better to use http://andblogs.net/2008/12/android-dev-phone-1-software-image/ - the mirror is much faster. These are images sucked off an ADP1 when it was delivered, not officially released by google, etc etc etc. (And there is no radio.img.) [android-developers] Re: Official update for G1 Andriod developer phone (ADP) stock firmware
Hello, I meant to post, for some time now, a request to same effect as points 1 and 2 (from Karl's message). Shipping a dev device with a firmware and the ability to flash a new one without making the original firmware available forces me to boot an hacked recovery image to backup the original firmware so I can restore it at a later stage, which is rather unprofessional. I understand that the dev firmware contains a few closed source components and apps (maps API and application and gmail app for instance) so it is not possible to rebuild an exact replica of the original firmware from source. It would be sufficient if the repo was tagged for each official release of the SDK so that it would compile to a working firmware minus the closed source API and apps. thanks -- Delio On Feb 20, 4:10 pm, "waters.k...@gmail.com" wrote: > Hi JBQ, > > You are right, you have answered that question a lot, although I had a > some trouble finding posts on it. > > A solution to everyone's problem might be a web page with some > information. [android-developers] Re: Official update for G1 Andriod developer phone (ADP) stock firmware
I don't control the various sites that you mentioned, though it's true at this point that having the information out there would indeed be good, given the growing evidence that many developers are eager to find that information. I'll mention it to our web guys in case they're not already reading this. Hoping to make the answers easier to find for other people who might search around, I'll answer your questions here (though the second one would really be more appropriate on the android-platform list as it's not directly related to development with the official SDK). -the 1.0 images aren't currently available either. I expect that they'll be made available at the same time as the 1.1 images (which will allow to switch back and forth between the two). I don't know any specific time frame for this to happen. -the exact source code for the entire 1.0 build is not available, though the android-1.0 tag in the git repositories is a reasonably close approximation of the underlying platform (the differences being essentially cosmetic). That will still be missing the proprietary Google applications that are built on top of the platform, and in addition the proprietary files necessary to run Android on Dream need to be extracted from an existing device. Being able to build and run (even without the Google bits) might be a harder task than it seems. I don't expect that the source code for the 1.1 platform will be available as our primary goal in this area is to switch to a real open-source mode where discussions, design and development happen "in the open", and that goal is using all the resources that would otherwise be able to work on a 1.1 code drop. Hi JBQ, You are right, you have answered that question a lot, although I had a some trouble finding posts on it. A solution to everyone's problem might be a web page with some information. A page on http://developer.android.com/ or http://code.google.com/android/ or http://www.android.com/ that would provide the following information would be incredibly helpful. 1. An image of the original firmware release, so that I can easily return to a stable state. 2. What steps are needed to check out the source code for that original stable state (source control revisions/tags/versions - whatever git calls them) so that I can build the above original firmware release myself. It would be really awesome if I could start my code modifications with a stable android tree that I know is already running and working on my device. 3. Essentially the same blurb you posted above, about the next firmware release. It seems like that shouldn't take more then a few minutes of work, and maybe a few weeks of hassling the web guys. When the next release comes up, just add items 1 and 2 for it, and update item 3 for the next release. It might help everyone if those of you tirelessly working the groups set up a blog where you post a summary of a question and your (Google's) clear answer. Put a link to it in your sigs along the lines of "Android questions already answered: [link]". Searching groups is helpful, but there's a lot of misinformation and omitted information which can be avoided in the more controlled environment of a blog post. [android-developers] Re: Official update for G1 Andriod developer phone (ADP) stock firmware
Hi Jean, thank you for replying, i appreciate that is must be extremely annoying having to answer the same question over and over which is part of the reason i raised my points. When i posted this topic i tried a few different search terms and managed to find 3 topics that eventually went on to discuss the ADP1.1 official update, they were: 1. Do you have an ADP1? Have you received the holiday update OTA? http://groups.google.com/group/android-discuss/browse_thread/thread/e11eeb7793ffd656?hl=en# 2. Is the holiday_devphone build an official ADP1 image? http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/browse_thread/thread/4fc696bd66b988f6?hl=en 3. Where is a system-image for DP1? http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/browse_thread/thread/825fb4e67d510416?hl=en My frustration or grip was not that nobody has eventually taken the time to answer the question but that because there had been no proactive attempt by the people in the know to let developers know what is going on, there has been an unnecessary amount of confusion and frustration (and the answering of the same question over and over). The topics above where you have made answers are not exactly related to a specific question of ADP1.1 official update and I wanted to make it easier for people who may still be looking for this to get a clear answer and fast. I know that I'm not alone in feeling that this matter has not been handled correctly, no doubt there are some very good (and it appears secretive) reasons for this but never the less an official statement should have been made at the very least to let developers know that they need to be patient. I want to reiterate that my comments were made with the intention of highlighting what i believe is something that needs to be improved and not to infuriate those on the receiving end of all these ADP update requests. I'm not really sure what to make of 'I'm not allowed to answer question #2', all i can say is that it doesn't really sound like the spirit of open source. My gripe about your post is that you didn't search the archives or read the messages of the last few days. There are no answers. (Well, there is one answer. "We're working on it." Occasionally followed by "you have know idea how hard it is". This is basically the same answer they've given for 6 months for most anything, including "why can't I delete email on my retail g1? its a 1 line fix!") I do object to "that are false" - what, precisely, is "false"? (Its not officially released, but that is kinda the definition of "leaked"..)
