Traditionally, their algorithm hasn't been that complicated. You could
pretty much just keep repeating the term in your listing (in a natural
way) until you saw yourself rise to the top. I don't expect that will
always work and could be penalized.

That's most useful if you know what keywords are making you the big
bucks (and not just think you know). I've pretty much cracked that
part of the problem. I've even thought about putting up an online
training course on the, but have been too busy.

2011-02-12 Thread Jon F Hancock
Come to think of it, Radiant HD popped to the top of the list when I
searched for Facebook the other day. I think it is because Radiant HD
describes itself as being able to share top scores on Facebook. It still
shouldn't show up above Facebook though.

For a long time, my app, LauncherPro Icons, has shown above LauncherPro for
a search for "launcherpro" despite LP having 1,000,000+ downloads and I have
about 30,000.

Something weird is going on here, for example if you search on the Market
website for "twitter" you get the official app, and also games like Radiant HD,
but you don't get TweetDeck which has "Twitter" in the title and does appear as
the 2nd "related app" for Twitter (official).

Very strange.

These days? Sorry, TreKing's assessment of the Market search is
adequate. The mere fact that they are tweaking it might mean it
*could* get better. And the Android Market team works at Google's
lunar base, where not even anyone else at Google hardly talks to
them.

It doesn't just matter the search algorithm that the Market uses - it
also matters the title and description that the developers choose.

That said, some of these results are strange enough that it might mean
they are throwing in some randomness into the search to measure which
things get clicked on. It wouldn't surprise me if Google started using
other factors to rank search besides keyword relevance.

I mention this as a fun theory; they aren't going to tell us what the
ranking factors are. Have they ever released their full search
algorithm for Google.com? Nope.

Getting a little cynical these days, huh TreKing? ;-)

>From market.android.com, the search results are pretty good for both
those search phrases. "trail map" brings up two apparently decent
trail map apps first. "English news" brings up news apps. Most of
them cover foreign topics, but they are in English. You can expect an
American or British news organization to show up for that though
because it is implied that they are in English, so the word "English"
will never be in their descriptions.
