yes, we can work on getting a clean post together on a new thread with
options to vote on.

currently their are 3 major variations (there are some minor tweaks as
well)

1. vertical (symmetric) divide

2. color distributed at an angle, with the angle matching the angle of
   the A's inner leg

3. color distributed at an angled, with the angle of the split at 45
   degrees.

in addition there has been discussion of what the default color used
on the website etc will be. This can be a 2nd point to vote on
separate from the basic form.

As Noah pointed the logo form and color may be changed by the theme
etc. I would expect for an indicator icon with a flag scheme we would
have a flat grey version of the logo. But we can still choose a
default color to use.

Currently we have a cyan and red version.

I will work with Noah to get a post together, in a new thread, that
makes the options obvious and easy to vote on.

Sure, the color is going to get adapted depending on where it is used,
but it doesn't preclude the project from offering a couple of different
variations for them to start from.

Eg. we should probably have a more monochromatic version that fits
in with the current flat colorless icon themes.

getting displayed on the internet shouldn't be a problem. If we adopt it,
it will be put up on the project pages, wiki, common criteria etc. We
could even submit some edits to the wikipedia article on apparmor.

We can also start using it in presentation etc. Yes it will take some
time but since we aren't replacing an existing branding (we don't
really have anything atm) I expect it will catch on fairly fast.

Re: [apparmor] Proposal for a new AppArmor logo

2018-05-24 Thread Noah Davis
Unless you're shipping an official GUI application, it should really
be up to application developers and icon theme authors what the
functional icons look like. The point of this logo is to give artists
a common starting point that can be adapted to their needs. When users
see the shield with the mirrored 'A's, they should hopefully think
"Ah, that must be AppArmor!" instead of having to wonder what some
generic looking lock or shield icon means. Of course, it will likely
take a while before this logo catches on and it might never if it
isn't prominently displayed when people look for AppArmor on the
internet.

I like the red too; I prefer the cyan but that just might be a holdover
from my BBS days.. I think my 'ideal' use of these icons would be cyan for
nearly everything, and red in the i3bar or notification area when there's
recent DENIED lines in my audit logs.

they're both really sharp. :)

I see. I misunderstood what you meant when you said that the 'A's were
hard to see at smaller sizes. I thought you were talking about smaller
icon resolutions. If you have a fairly average sized HiDPI screen, but
only use 1x scaling, there's really not much I can do about that, but
I'm glad that changing the color of the cyan 'A' to red has made it
easier to read the icon for you.

I like all of them. I think I would probably choose the red one just
because I find it pops a little more/is easier to pick out (probably
has more contrast) at a small size; which is important to me as I use

What about using 'red' instead of 'cyan' ?

Re: [apparmor] Proposal for a new AppArmor logo

2018-05-22 Thread Noah Davis
Asymmetry isn't really part of the design, but the shadows all come
down at a 45 degree angle. The long legs fade back into the inner
shield backgrounds of the same color. The lower part of the long leg
of the cyan 'A' is actually a separate piece that blends the leg into
the shadow as if it was reaching back down below the source of the
shadow. I've changed the rate at which the color of the leg darkens to
make it appear longer and lengthened the gradient of the shadows cast
by the cyan 'A' and the leg of the white 'A'.

This is really cool :) thanks!

I think my sense of symmetry would prefer if the lower, left-side shadow
would reach a point at the same level of the right-side inverted A,
to match the pointy shadow at the top on the upper left side... have
you tried more symmetry? or is the asymmetry important to the design?

Thanks

Re: [apparmor] Proposal for a new AppArmor logo

2018-05-22 Thread Noah Davis
Whoops, I accidentally sent an older 32x32 version. I've attached the
64x64 version with some slight adjustments to the size of the 'A's,
inner shield and height of the shadow on the leg of the white 'A'.
This kind of logo isn't really suitable for icon resolutions smaller
than 32x32, so I could make an alternative logo specifically for 22x22
and 16x16.

Hi Noah,

nice, thanks

so I do have a few comments
- at smaller sizes it gets difficult to identify the 'A's

I messed around in gimp a little and here are some suggestions based on things
I tried, feel free to ignore
- darkening the colour does increase the contrast and helps with the white A
but doesn't help the coloured A, I think because it has less contrast to the
shadow
- extending the none shared legs a little (they can extend into the border)
does help with being able recognize the 'A's when the logo is small
- providing a dark outline (I used the outline color) does help with the 'A's
visibility

of course I understand some of these may affect the logo in adverse ways when
you are looking at a larger version.

the other question would be around licensing, if you want it to be used in the
upstream project (and not just yast) the license will need to be compatible,
and open to sharing.
