David,
I had to do the same thing as Virginia on an XP machine a couple months ago. I
had both disks 3.1 and 4.0 and still had to contact
ar...@infotrieve.com for the links to download the
files that actually worked.
Once we straightened out the static IP and email info everything has worked
fine.

Hi David, I am also working on installing Ariel on a new Windows 7 machine. If
you email Ariel Support [ar...@infotrieve.com], they will send you the
instructions and link to download 3.4 and then 4.1.1. This is how you have to
install them, you will still need your product key on the 4.0 disk jacket but
you won't install 4.0.

We are having some issues with the ports and our static IP but I think those
are due to our network and not Ariel itself. Working with IT and Ariel support
to get that fixed.

Hope this helps,

Subject: [ARIE-L] Install/update fails

Hello all,

I am at a really stuck place with my latest attempt at an Ariel installation.
First I have attempted to install on a new Windows 7 machine (Win& Pro) then on
an existing XP machine. I am having the same problem on both. First of all, I
have a full version of v 3.01 and an update version of v 4.0. I cannot install
v. 4.0 directly as I only have the update. So I install v.3.01, everything
seems to be hunky-dory. When I attempt to install the update to 4.0, everything
goes by the book up to the point where 3.01 is uninstalled and 4.0 is brought
up. After the various warnings about the deletion of various .dll files and the
"now installing 4.0" message, I am stopped dead in my tracks by a pop-up error
"feature transfer error" Error: 0 window. The upshot is that not only does 4.0
not install, but 3.01 is gone as well.
This has happened on both machines. Any ideas?

Thanks
Dave Wiseman

RE: [ARIE-L] Problem - Ariel email to patrons

2009-04-14 Thread Maynarich, Barbara
I had this problem and it turned out to be a firewall issue. The IS Dept. had
to change something to allow outgoing mail beyond the firewall. I'm not sure
what they actually changed but it fixed my problem.

We have been unable to email received documents to our students off campus.
On-campus email works fine.  We are getting an SMTP 550  5.7.1 error - unable
to relay.  Has anyone experienced this problem and resolved it?  If so, what
was done?

RE: [ARIE-L] e-mail delivery

2009-02-25 Thread Maynarich, Barbara
Blake, as to your question, possibly IS has increased size limitations
for most accounts as I've had little trouble with delivery.

I emailed over 800 articles last year to institutions of which only
about a dozen came back for size issues. In these cases the borrowing
library was only able to receive attachments under 2MB. They then
supplied a personal email account to receive the articles.

As for internal patrons, many of theirs come back because they don't
empty their mailboxes. Libraries are better at routinely deleting and
emptying their trash.

Photocopied articles tend to create large sized PDF files. Ariel does
tend to solve this issue, however many hospital libraries do not use
Ariel. It tends to be used more by Universities. We still use Ariel
for those who prefer it and email for anyone who doesn't have Ariel.

Hope this helps.

Do people who email articles run into attachment size problems? At one
time, Ariel was a convenient way to make sure that your document reached
its destination without being blocked by local email restrictions. Are
institutions no longer blocking large email attachments?

While I suppose it's a little tacky to bring up here but we are
considering dropping ariel and sending and receiving articles via e-mail

receving e-mail .pdf files and if this is becoming more common.

Dear Ariel-ers,

Does anybody have a recent assessment of the cost involved in setting up

and running a server where users can log in to download their Ariel
articles (as opposed to our current practice of sending pdfs via
e-mail?).

Thanks in advance, and apologies if this has already been discussed.
