Re: [arr] let rahman work-sj suryah better change

2005-09-16 Thread rain drop

hi,

People I meet say that ARR has done magic with Ah Aah, but SJ Surya has picturised them in a lousy manner. They critisize Surya and not ARR.

Blaming Music for a film's success or otherwise is not justifiable.

Bombay Theme is really famous in France: It was used for an
advertising featuring the famous Zinedine Zidane, was part of
different french compilation and is often use as background music in
a very famous aftenoon radio show.

RE: [arr] Re: Is ghai gud enough to use rahman's music?

2005-09-16 Thread Dasun Abeysekera

I find it hard to believe ARR does not know how his songs will be used in films. I mean certain directors are reputed for not using entire songs in movies. That's why I find it hard to believe that ARR is so upset about it. A song used as background music, even in its entirety, will not carry well with audiences anyway, because the full focus is not on the song.
The reason ARR likes doing movies with the likes of Benegal must be because the stories are good and have some character to them, which opens up so many possibilities. And period movies give him the chance to compose melodies unlike more formulaic movies. He probably should not do too many period movies at one time, and try mis it up a little bit. I don't think he should give up on period movies because some of his best music have been inspired by period drama.
Just my 2 cents.

[arr] Bombay Theme - a great surprise for me !!!!!!!

2005-09-16 Thread Aravind a.m.

Hi,
I am a student of IIM Bangalore. Students from foreign univs. come to
our campus and study for one term, which is known as the student
exchange program...

On wednesday, there was a welcome program for these people and we had
to perform music and dance which will showcase our Indian culture.

I along with 3 people chose only
A.R.Rahman songs and performed them... I had already prepared a great
write-up about A.R.Rahman and read it out b4 our performance.
I played the BOMBAY THEME MUSIC the foreigners were so impressed with the music..

After the show, one french
student  told me that she had heard the "Bombay Theme" music many
times in Paris in malls etc.. and she loved it.. but she had been
trying to find out  what music it was and who was the composer..
She was delighted when I played it

Such is the reach of our boss, guys I was sooo excited!

Regards,
Aravind AM

[arr] Indian composer brings Bollywood to Lord of the Rings

2005-09-16 Thread Neil Panchal
AM - Friday, 16 September , 2005 08:24:00
Reporter: Karen Barlow

TONY EASTLEY: A megastar of music, adored by millions, has managed to
slip into the country virtually unnoticed. Indian composer and
musician A.R. Rahman has among his fans Andrew Lloyd Webber, Baz
Lurhmann, Cate Blanchett and of course millions of fellow Indians.

He's composed the music for scores of albums and Bollywood films, and
is gearing up for what may be a very controversial project, a stage
musical production of Lord of The Rings.

A R Rahman, who was born a Hindu but who converted to Islam, is in
Australia for stadium concerts in Melbourne and Sydney, which are
already sold out.

AM's Karen Barlow reports.

(Sound of Rahman's music)

KAREN BARLOW: A classically trained musician from the India's Tamil
south, A.R. Rahman, started his career writing advertising jingles.
India's prolific and vibrant Bollywood film industry took notice, and
since 1992 he's been in demand as a film scorer and artist. Rahman is
known for melding traditional Indian music with western ideas and
modern instruments.

(Sound of Rahman's music)

A R RAHMAN: When I got my first break I thought I don't want to do the
same thing, which other people are doing here. I want our music to go
around the world, being appreciated by all people around the globe
rather than just being the (inaudible) of Indian, Asian people.

So that made me take efforts to do little changes, changing the beats
or whatever and getting harmonies and chord progressions and stuff
like that, you know, with traditional Indian melodies. And I think
something, some magic happened.

(Sound of Rahman's music)

A R RAHMAN: I do appreciate every kind of music and sometimes it comes
in naturally rather than intentionally.

(Sound of Rahman's music)

KAREN BARLOW: A R Rahman's joyful melodies and rhythms have won over
millions of people, including Sydney's Vandana Ram, who's grown up
with traditional Indian music.

VANDANA RAM: It is an experience of discovery, because you feel like
you're starting off somewhere, it's often really slow and then it
builds up and you go on a little journey with it.

There's often really strong percussion, so there's a fantastic sort of
build up and climax, it's a whole experience. Yeah, I just find it
leaves me it's just fulfilling.

KAREN BARLOW: While Bollywood is starting to be mass-marketed to
western audiences, Vandana Ram says A.R. Rahman is in a class of his
own. Rahman says Bollywood compliments his work, but he's starting to
reach out to a wider audience.

Andrew Lloyd Webber got him to do the music for his Broadway
production, Bombay Dreams, three years ago.

Now he's working with Finnish folk musicians on the score for a Lord
of the Rings stage musical, which is set to open in Toronto early next
year.

(To A.R. Rahman) Well, tell me about that, because it's really hard to
imagine The Lord of the Rings as a musical. I mean, how are you
approaching this?

A R RAHMAN: It's a they don't want to call this a musical,
because
there's so much music in it, probably two times more music in it than
other musical shows, but it's done in a way where it's not the
typical ok, now, you're going to hear a song.

KAREN PERCY: It's not Disney?

A R RAHMAN: No.

KAREN PERCY: Oh, that's good. Because I suppose there are a lot of
fans of The Lord of the Rings, even before the movies came out, and
they'll be very particular about this.

A R RAHMAN: Very true. And I think some of them will definitely be
more happy than with the films, when they see the show.

KAREN PERCY: Really? That's a big call.

A R RAHMAN: Yeah. We are hoping that.

(Sound of Rahman's music)

TONY EASTLEY: Indian composer and musician, A.R. Rahman ending that
report from Karen Barlow.

Re: [arr] Water audio release

2005-09-16 Thread rakesh venkatraman
hello..
i believe u would be avoidin disappointment by not
expectin too much from "water"...
rahman's own definition of a 10/10 album may 've
changed over the years...
deepa mehta's and rahman's chemistry is quite good..
no doubt... but a 10/10 album would be a trifle too
much..

Re: [arr] ARR's unknown masterpieces.....an overview

2005-09-16 Thread Aravind a.m.

Hi,
The 3 beautiful, wonderful melodies from Tehzeeb:
Sabaq Aisa
Na Shiqwa hota
Mujhe Toofan

all 3 sung by Sujatha Bhattacharya (Madhu Shree)...
Lovely songs... I just lovvve them...  It is such a pity
that people hardly know that a movie named Tehzeeb was released.
All 3 songs totally wasted.

Regards,
Aravind

Hi Rahmaniacs, Let me add some more to the list of arr's masterpieces which hasn't got the deserved fame & appreciation 1) first & foremost in the list is one of my all time favorites "ye jo des hai tera" from swades...the song was not even aired on the musi channels...picturisation cudn't match the songs brilliance(with due respect to the genius ashutosh gowariker, it must be said tht the film really matched the spirit of the song).Rahman really touches your soul when he sings " yun to sare sukh hi barse...par door hai tu apne ghar se...aa laut chal to apne diwane". Really makes the NRI yearn for his homeland. 2)Vellai Pookkal This song was mentioned before by other fans. this is also one of my favorites. after hearing the audio, really
was looking forward to amazing picturisation by the brilliant mani ratnam.but alas, the song was not even picturised. was relegated to a background score. cannot blame the director . but he shud have atleast picturised this song atleast for the music channels. the visuals need not be from the movie. but something more general, like a music video...something like Michael Jackson's "Heal the world" or scorpions' "winds of change". it can be done now also..the song is such a masterpiece .it doesn't deserve to be ignored. Such a soothing tune & matching lyrics, u can't find anywhere. & that special acoustic feel is just unmatchable. 3)zindagi hai dua from dil ne jise apna kaha..no one really knew tht there was such a song in the filmit was also not shown on the channels while himesh's mediocre songs got airtimethe song has got a nice
rhythm...karthik does a nice job...really lik this song.. 4)"Uyirum Neeye" from Pavithra..a really touching song sung by Unnikrishnan. The movie along with the music went unnoticed. Haven't seen the song's video. so can't comment on that. anyone seen that? plz comment. the interludes with guitar & veena are amazing. lyrics touches your heart. 5)"My wish comes true" from Kisnaa track with a true international feel to it. Sunitha Sarathy does a fine job with the vocals. the movie doesn't deserve such an amazing song. same is the case with "hum hai iss pal yahaan". 6)the entire soundtrack of Netaji(except aazadi)..the soundtrack of netaji was one of the best released last year. It had many amazing songs like "desh ki mitti", "Ekla Chalo", "Zikr" in arr's amazing vocals, the sweet lullaby "ghoomparani" & lotz of amazing BGMs. But it
all went waste in a lacklustre uninspiring movie, which will rate as the worst of the amazing shyam benegal, till date. the director made the big mistake of cutting out all the songs & still making a 4hour long movie. He failed to understand the effect of arr's songs in patriotic movies, particularly visible in legend of bhagat singh. Bhagat singh was such an inspiring movie because of those amazing BGMs & songs by arr. 7)"Naina Milake" from Saathiya. This song came in place of the alaipyuthey song in the tamil movie. It was a song with a little oldish touch. But this nice song was lost amidst all those hit songs from the movie. 8)"khamosh raat" from Thakshak. Nice singing by RooopKumar Rathod. cool guitar pieces. a totally different arr song. one of my alltime favorites. didn't become a hit as i expected it to be on hearing it first on audio. i still
listen to it almost everyday. 9)entire "Meenaxi" album. one of arr's classiest compositions ever...but went almost totally unnoticed(except for the negative publicity for "Noor Un ala"). the album deserved a national album for its sheer brilliance. Be it the philosophic "do kadam" or the mellow "ye Rishta"every song had something special in store. Asha Bhosle rocks with dhuan dhuan. not to be forgotten are the instrumentals- "cyclists' rhythm" & "Potter's village". And sukhwinder does a sexy turn in " chinnamma chilakkamma". an album oozing with class. 10)"Kankalaal Kaidhu sei" album. unimaginative picturisation coupled with bad acting really spoiled the masterpieces in this album."Ennuir Thozhi" had one of the best piano intros ever by our boss. The Piano interludes were more amazing. "Anaarkali" had nice tabla works. "Theekkuruvi" is
indescribable. Hariharan does a great job in "Azhakiya Cindrella". altogether an amazing album wasted in a mediocre movie. The thing is that no one other than us(hardcore rahmaniacs), have heard about this album. 11)"Jhula Bahon ka" & "Bol sajni" from Dli Saja Ke Rekhna. The movie was a failure & music was a moderate hit. still didn't receive the fame it deserved. 12

[arr] ARR's unknown masterpieces.....an overview

2005-09-16 Thread Praveen.S.R
Hi Rahmaniacs,
Let me add some more to the list of arr's masterpieces which hasn't
got the deserved fame & appreciation

1) first & foremost in the list is one of my all time favorites "ye
jo des hai tera" from swades...the song was not even aired on the
musi channels...picturisation cudn't match the songs brilliance(with
due respect to the genius ashutosh gowariker, it must be said tht the
film really matched the spirit of the song).Rahman really touches
your soul when he sings " yun to sare sukh hi barse...par door hai tu
apne ghar se...aa laut chal to apne diwane". Really makes the NRI
yearn for his homeland.

2)Vellai Pookkal
This song was mentioned before by other fans. this is also one of my
favorites. after hearing the audio, really was looking forward to
amazing picturisation by the brilliant mani ratnam.but alas, the
song was not even picturised. was relegated to a background score.
cannot blame the director . but he shud have atleast picturised this
song atleast for the music channels. the visuals need not be from the
movie. but something more general, like a music video...something
like Michael Jackson's "Heal the world" or scorpions' "winds of
change". it can be done now also..the song is such a masterpiece .it
doesn't deserve to be ignored. Such a soothing tune & matching
lyrics, u can't find anywhere. & that special acoustic feel is just
unmatchable.

3)zindagi hai dua from dil ne jise apna kaha..no one really knew
tht there was such a song in the filmit was also not shown on the
channels while himesh's mediocre songs got airtimethe song has got
a nice rhythm...karthik does a nice job...really lik this song..

4)"Uyirum Neeye" from Pavithra..a really touching song sung by
Unnikrishnan. The movie along with the music went unnoticed. Haven't
seen the song's video. so can't comment on that. anyone seen that?
plz comment. the interludes with guitar & veena are amazing.
lyrics touches your heart.

5)"My wish comes true" from Kisnaa track with a true
international feel to it. Sunitha Sarathy does a fine job with the
vocals. the movie doesn't deserve such an amazing song. same is the
case with "hum hai iss pal yahaan".

6)the entire soundtrack of Netaji(except aazadi)..the soundtrack
of netaji was one of the best released last year. It had many amazing
songs like "desh ki mitti", "Ekla Chalo", "Zikr" in arr's amazing
vocals, the sweet lullaby "ghoomparani" & lotz of amazing BGMs. But
it all went waste in a lacklustre uninspiring movie, which will rate
as the worst of the amazing shyam benegal, till date. the director
made the big mistake of cutting out all the songs & still making a
4hour long movie. He failed to understand the effect of arr's songs
in patriotic movies, particularly visible in legend of bhagat singh.
Bhagat singh was such an inspiring movie because of those amazing
BGMs & songs by arr.

7)"Naina Milake" from Saathiya. This song came in place of the
alaipyuthey song in the tamil movie. It was a song with a little
oldish touch. But this nice song was lost amidst all those hit songs
from the movie.

8)"khamosh raat" from Thakshak. Nice singing by RooopKumar Rathod.
cool guitar pieces. a totally different arr song. one of my alltime
favorites. didn't become a hit as i expected it to be on hearing it
first on audio. i still listen to it almost everyday.

9)entire "Meenaxi" album. one of arr's classiest compositions
ever...but went almost totally unnoticed(except for the negative
publicity for "Noor Un ala"). the album deserved a national album for
its sheer brilliance. Be it the philosophic "do kadam" or the
mellow "ye Rishta"every song had something special in store. Asha
Bhosle rocks with dhuan dhuan. not to be forgotten are the
instrumentals- "cyclists' rhythm" & "Potter's village". And
sukhwinder does a sexy turn in " chinnamma chilakkamma". an album
oozing with class.

10)"Kankalaal Kaidhu sei" album. unimaginative picturisation coupled
with bad acting really spoiled the masterpieces in this album."Ennuir
Thozhi" had one of the best piano intros ever by our boss. The Piano
interludes were more amazing. "Anaarkali" had nice tabla
works. "Theekkuruvi" is indescribable. Hariharan does a great job
in "Azhakiya Cindrella". altogether an amazing album wasted in a
mediocre movie. The thing is that no one other than us(hardcore
rahmaniacs), have heard about this album.

11)"Jhula Bahon ka" & "Bol sajni" from Dli Saja Ke Rekhna. The movie
was a failure & music was a moderate hit. still didn't receive the
fame it deserved.

12)"Vaanil eni pottu" from Pudhiya Mannargal. Its an old movie
starring Vikram, before he became a star. It was released recently
with the name changed as "Puthiya Thalapathy" in Kerala. It also had
another amazing song "eduda antha suriya".

13)"Thenkizhakku" from Kizhakku Cheemayile. A number of sweet
melodies of arr(like this one) has been lost in small &
