Mehta wins with Water Fri, November 11, 2005 Her subtly layered film blends rich human drama with difficult social issues. That might sound strange if you know the film's tumultuous history. As the final part in her elemental trilogy that started with Fire (1996) and Earth (1998), Water was to have been made in India five years ago. But Hindu extremists, who opposed the telling of this story, stormed the production, destroyed sets and threatened the Toronto filmmaker. Water, a Canadian production, was delayed and finally filmed in Sri Lanka as River Moon. Mehta was able to revive her project, recast it with a uniformly stellar ensemble and create it as an act of love and not of defiance. The blessing is that she was able to triumph. Water was the opening-night gala at the Toronto film festival. In art, it is results and not process that captivate audiences. Water is an exquisite drama brimming with life and laughter, great tenderness and wrenching tragedy. It is a story of lives lived. There is wit and personality here. There is lovely music by Mychael Danna, with the songs of A. R. Rahman. Giles Nuttgens' photography is gorgeous. The action takes place on the banks of the Ganges River in India in the late 1930s. A child bride (played with spirit by Sarala, a Sri Lankan village girl speaking lines phonetically) loses her aged husband after the wedding feast. She is shipped off to a widows' house, where her head is shaved and she is forced into a life of destitution and potential depravity. The ashram is financed through prostitution. Otherwise, there is no money for food. The star whore (Canadian Lisa Ray) is a spiritual creature who rises above her sexual duties. She is a lotus flower living in dirty water, a metaphor offered in the film. Sarala and Ray become friends and provide the film's joyous moments (the clapping scene). Together, they encounter an intriguing outsider (Bollywood star John Abraham), a wealthy liberal idealist. Embracing the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, our naive hero wants his beloved India to change, including an end to the barbarism of shunning widows. And, of course, Abraham falls in love with Ray. There is another woman (played by the respected Indian star Seema Biswas) who figures prominently in the complex structure of this film. She is a mature, religiously devout widow who watches over both Ray and Sarala. Mehta, as writer and director, pulls off a small miracle with the layers of her story. In the first act, the focus is on Sarala; in the second act, it is on Ray; in the third act, the film belongs to Biswas. Yet this does not feel forced or artificial. There is a natural flow as the story evolves. Another small miracle -- and this is also true of Fire and Earth -- is how well the socio-political elements are woven in, without destroying the intimacy of the saga. We get crucial background in subtle ways, especially on Gandhi and the movement to free India from the British. So, when Gandhi appears on screen in a riveting scene at a local train station, it feels right. Not incidentally, the profound words Gandhi speaks are historically accurate, although the place setting is fictional. That is true of the whole story. Through fiction this powerful and humanistic, the truth can be told. Hi Group, Have anybody noticed the magic in Enuyir Thozhilye in Kangalal kaithu sei. I am curious to know who might have played the keyboard for the first interlude. The keystrokes are very fast and with very good progression with the female voice in the backdrops. The fast note I had heard was the one by Adnan Sami in Bheegi Bheegi raaton mein. hi fans, today on zee t.v the famous programme hero hona SA RE GA MA PA challenge 2005,s 3rd and final round started,and today,s special episode was dedicated to rahman songs,all 12 finalists sang rahmans famous songs and thier mentors,adesh shirivastav,jatin lalit,ismail derbaar and himesh reshhamiya,,praised rahman many time the show was special two hour. i enjoyed it very much as i was a reguler viewr of this musical mahayudh since last three months.. they sang songs from roja,bombay,rangeela,dil se,sapnay,pukaar,zubeida,saathiya,nayak.lakeer. hope u many hav watched it. plz do share ur coments. Hey Guys, Last week I was watching the channel travel Living and they were talking about the bueatiful city London. They then showed a few good theatres where dramas generally take place and guess what...they first showed Bombay dreams..the song which came up was shakalaka baby and Chaiya ChaiyaI was so thrilled by this and then a few interviews with a couple of people who said this stage show was good...they were talking about Bombay dreams..ARR Rocks...Not sure how many of them got to watch it!! hello frnds on 11 th nov the episode of saregama pa had the A R Rahman special theme.. all the 12 participants sing great hits of ARR and all of the were prepared by their mentors (ismile darbar, jatin lalit, adesh , himesh reshmiya) the good thing about it was that after every [articipants performance the 5 music directors would praise Rahman for the composition ... this is a rare site in bollywood where a MD praises a MD... more after the last performance while giving ratings adesh srivastav gave 4 stars to the participant and said that he gave 3 to the singer for his singing ability and the 4 th star he gets b,coz of the composition of the track which made the singers voice sound good.. even ismile darbar said that if rahman was watching this show then he would surely like to make all 12 of them sing for his album this shows the palce ARR has in bollywood bye Yahoo! Director K S Ravikumar and actor Kamal Haasan, the duo that gave such entertaining hits like Avvai Shanmughi, Tenali and Panchatantram, will be seen in action again Dasavatharam. Joining with them are Crazy Mohan and A R Rehman. The coming together of the four will certainly raise expectations among the movie-buffs. Kamal Haasan is busy with his Vettaiyadu Vilaiyadu while Ravikumar is giving final touches to his Saravana. Beginning next year, Dasavatharam is expected to go to floors. Dasvatharamn features Kamal Haasan in ten different roles and reportedly has five heroines acting in the movie. Speaking about Dasavatharam, Ravikumar gets excited. `The amount of effort that Kamal is putting just in preparation of the characters is amazing,' he says. Obviously the make-up is an important aspect of his roles. This time around, the specialization has reached high levels. `We may have to put subtitles below to identify Kamal for you. Otherwise, you may not even spot him,' the director says. Well, can't wait for long. The excitement is peaking.
