Apart from the cassette/ CD, the BGM at the meenaa baazaarscene in the film is a joy to listen to. So different, sogenuinely persian. He shares the limelight with Akshay Kumar in Garam Masala heading for $1-million target in USA. The film achieved that target in the United Kingdom in about three weeks. In Canada, Deepa Mehta's Water -- in which Abraham plays a reformist Gandhian lawyer -- is heading for $1 million in the next few days. The critically acclaimed film, which was shot in Sri Lanka with no publicity following the agitation by conservative Hindus in India against it over four years ago, opened in 11 theatres in a handful of Canadian cities on November 4. The Hindi language film, which deals with widow remarriage in India in the 1930s, grossed about $150,000 in three days. Next weekend, it was shown in 41 theatres and by November 14, it grossed $450,000, according to distributor Mongrel Media, By November 21, the film's gross stood at about $700,000. Fox Searchlight will release the film, which opened the Toronto International Film Festival in September, either in late February or early March in a handful of cities in the US and slowly expand it across the country. Mongrel Media, which had distributed Mehta's Bollywood/Hollywood in Canada over two years ago, treated her new, subtitled film as if it were a mainstream Canadian film. Shabana Azmi in WaterApart from placing advertisements in Indian publications, radio and television, Mongrel advertised the film with television spots on mainstream channels. With Water, we felt that we had a very special film, Tom Alexander, Mongrel's director of theatrical releasing, said. We wanted to give it the best slots in the country and let people know it is a very special and important film. We began our ads many days before the film's release. The idea was to create a slow build through every channel we could. We feel the film has done very well and exceeded our expectations, Alexander told trade publications as Water was about to enter its fourth week. That is the inconsistency with ARR's music that it does not gel with the era of the film. ARR always gives current music. His music was not 1947-ish in Krishna or Earth, nor 1857-ish in mangal pandey, so on. It is like R D Berman's 1942 A Love Story music was current music of 1990s and was not 1942-ish. At that time, I had no recent period films to cite as example, but now here is Tajmahal which does not have 2005-ish music at all. Further, Naushad has even used the voices that ARR uses, especially Hariharan, even then he could get a feel of that period, that our man didn't (I wouldn't say, he couldn't). Apart from the cassette/ CD, the BGM at the meenaa baazaar scene in the film is a joy to listen to. So different, so genuinely persian. So 1600-ish. Thus, I repeat my that line that ARR never really gave a period music in his period films. But now, a rumor has struck really hard on it. The news is doing round that it is a remake of a Malayalam film. The grapevine is abuzz with the news that `Sivaji' is a remake of Malayalam film `Naaduvaazhigal' that shocked the people in 1980s. This Mohanlal film exposed the political corruption. Some people even quoted the example of `Chandramukhi', where director Vasu and the Producer Prabhu claimed till the last hour that it's not a remake of Malayalam film `Manichitrathazh'. HI all, All those who have listened to Water...Plz give your comments. For the very fact that A.R.Rahman sir has rated this as his "best".. What are your takes on this? Definitely this soundtrack grows on you.. There are not much instruments in the songs of "Water". He's totally concentrated on the vocals. I alsothink Sukhwinder Singh has done really well by doing justice to the songs he has sung. People who are musically inclined can give us reviews about the songs. It makes the rest of us enjoy the "technical" aspects in the songs. And whatever happened to 'Godfather' ? I heard it's releasing the end of the month.. Hope it's not a rumour. As a young boy, he sang the first few lines in Chiku Buku Railae in Gentleman set to tunes by his uncle. Now, this little boy is busy composing tunes for a movie titled Taxi Driver starring Prashanth. Prakash says I have passed eighth grade in piano and did a course in sound engineering. I had worked as music programmer for Vidyasagar, Harris Jeyaraj, Bharadwaj and Dheena. About a year ago, my uncle (Rehman) called me and asked me to work with him. I have worked along with Rehman in Swades, Kisna, Godfather and Subash Chandra Bose. About his work in Taxi Driver, Prakash says I have acquired good experience working with stalwarts in this industry. I have composed all six songs which have come very well. hello guys Just to clarify a few things.I dont know why this comparison is been done in the first place.Agreed that Naushad and Rahman rendered music for periodic films.But thats where the similarity ends.There are two types of periodic films.One that involves freedom struggle(to which category Rahman falls) and the other is the eternal love stories (Naushad ). Now Rawat to say that Mangal Pandey did not sound periodic ,would be really wrong.Can you imagine the 'mangala mangala song sung by a college kid running around ? Lagaan had the britishers involved,hence there is western fusion.I dont think O rey chori can fit todays movies witha couple running around trees?and the same applies to the other songs as well. Agreed he is different.Well wasnt he different when he started composing Roja? He set out a trend .Thats what he is doing for periodic movies.His own Trend. What is the first thing that strikes your mind when you come across a movie with such a title? That it's a historical? Obviously with a title that is immortalized as the catchline of freedom fighter Bhagat Singh anybody will think likewise. But hold on. This one isn't any period drama. On the contrary it's set in contemporary times and has a very modern outlook and a youthful charm to it. As the trailer of Rang De Basanti opens, some color literally flows in as graffiti is spray painted on walls of dilapidated ancient monuments in Delhi. 'This January a generation awakens' says the tagline as it introduces its lead star cast starting with Aamir Khan who plays the central character. In a wayward youthful hairdo (a pleasant change after the long locks of Mangal Pandey) and clad in jeans and leather jackets, it's a treat to watch Aamir Khan get back into the young-at-heart Dil Chahta Hai mode. Other actors who complete his gang of five include Kunal Kapoor (who made his debut in Meenaxi opposite Tabu) Sharman Joshi, the actor with an inborn flair for comic timing Siddharth (South star who played Vivek Oberoi's role in the Tamil version of Yuva) and R.Madhavan who along with Soha Ali Khan forms the only couple in the gang. Aamir bowled over by Mani Has signed Mani Ratnams next film without reading the script! Daily News and Analysis There are always too many stories surrounding Aamir Khan. One of them is, of course, how he meticulously goes through his film scripts and how he flawlessly gets under the skin of the characters he plays. But from what we hear, Khan has signed a Mani Ratnam film (produced by Bobby Bedi) without even going through the script! Apparently, Khan wanted to act under Ratnams direction for long and he saw this as an opportunity to work with the Chennai-based genius. Incidentally, Khan had some issues with the filmmakers controversial movie Bombay. In an interview published in The Guardian in 2002, he remarked that the film distorted the truth. Meanwhile, Bedi confirms that he is doing two films with Khan. But I dont want to say whether he has read the script or not thats between us. Romancing widows Meenakshi Shedde reviews Deepa Mehtas Watera moving film that still smacks of Orientalism Daily News and Analysis Water, the last of Deepa Mehtas trilogy, following Fire (1996) and Earth (1998), is a relative relief after her awful Bollywood/Hollywood. Shot in Sri Lanka after Hindu fundamentalists prevented her from filming it in Benares in 2000, the film was shown at the recent Pusan Film Festival in South Korea. The trilogy takes on the more insidious aspects of Hinduism, and one wonders why, after exploring Fires lesbian relationship in a contemporary setting, and Partition in 1947, Mehta sets a story about the exploitation of Hindu widows not in todays times, but in 1938. It seems more of a ploy to bring in Gandhi and period ambience (post-Dhoom macho biker John Abraham as Narayan, a Gandhian in dhoti-kurta and chappals). Chinese directors making provocative films often set them in earlier eras to weasel past the censors: is Mehta attempting the same? Fire was more gutsy and honest. Water, by placing those suffering widows in highly romantic riverine settingsall spreading banyan tree, inky blue nights and radiant moonsomehow smacks of Orientalism, exoticising exploitation. The story is of a small girl Chuyia (Sarala), who is married, widowed and dumped at a widows ashram. The resident widows include Shakuntala (Seema Biswas) and Kalyani (Lisa Ray) , who is forced to service rich clients. Narayan, who sees her visit his home, says, Shes probably going to my dad. Nonetheless he falls in love with her and wants to marry her. However, when they are about to marry, Kalyani commits suicide because, apparently, she didnt know she was servicing his dadand neither did he. This is all a bit thick, causing the heart of the film to collapse. When Gandhi leaves on a train, Shakuntala entrusts Chuyia to his care: she herself stays back, before turning to face the viewer in a deeply moving climax. The actors in the smaller roles are infinitely superior to the lead pair. Lisa Ray can barely act, but she does have a luminous grace. Abraham is so wooden, the flute he plays is more eloquent. Biswas saves the film with a finely etched performance, while Raghuvir Yadav as a eunuch-pimp, Vidula Javalgekar as the madam and Sarala bring a robust edge. The films biggest asset is Giles Nuttgens wonderfully lyrical, empathetic cinematography (Fire, Earth). And A R Rahmans songs are soul-stirring, including Ayo re sakhi and Piya ho. Like Bandit Queen, Water opens with Manus nasty laws about widows, and ends stating that there are 34 million Indian widows today, many living like those in the film. As with Mira Nairs Salaam Bombaya superb filmthe feeling that Mehta is exploiting the subject for the West lingers. We neglect our cities at our peril. Did Mangal Pandey had that NO. Mangal Pandey was a Brahmin in 1857. The film had englishmen. They used their language of their times. Why should they have spoken urdu of scholars? -Ray In any case, language/ dialogues are film/lyrics part. Music is different part and that is where ARR's soul is. I was only building on what some members had said at that time of our discussion that Naushad gave in Mughal-e-azam what was usual music of 60s and was not period music. Hi all, I type this as I'm completely dumbstruck by the music in the trailor...my god, this is indeed a mix of the old and a mix of the new rahmanwhy do I say this?? because this song had me completely stunned in the first hearing itself, and we all know that ARR's music needs a few listenings before we are in awe of the manand the fact that gives me goosebumps is that this is just 1 track out of 10 I am ready to put my life down and say that this album will be the biggest hit of the year and the biggest hit for our ARR since Lagaan, in terms of salesbecause from the looks of it, this is a completely youthful film and with Aamir, Madhavan, and Siddharth acting in it, this is a sure shot blockbuster at the box officeand my friends, that is what ARR needs the most now...a blockbuster moviebecause we've all seen some masterpieces go by without proper acknowledgement from the people in terms of album sales solely because the movie fared poorly at the box office..
