BANGKOK INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL GOLDEN KINNAREE AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED AT A GALA PRESENTATION 24 February 2006 The winners of the 4 th Bangkok International Film Festival Golden Kinnaree Awards were announced at a gala black-tie dinner held at the Conrad Hotel in Bangkok attended by international dignitaries from around the world. HRH Princess Ubol Rattana presented the Kinnaree award to winners selected by an international jury of producers, actors and directors from the entertainment industry. French star Catherine Deneuve was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award by HRH Princess Ubol Rattana at the gala in recognition of her contribution to the cinema. [arr] Anyone feel GF quality of audio CD seems lacking?
I noticed with recent ARR releases after KKS and E20U18...ARR CDs like Water, GF and AAH AHH have some quality issues...What happened, thought Technology now in the 2000s are supposed to be better? Frankl speaking some of early 90s ARR CDs have better quality than GF or AHH AHH As for GF, the audio doesnt seem to jump out like PAst ARR songs in the 90sI think ARR better start using his old equiment back. Hi Fanz, This (Issues regarding Quality of CDs) seems to be true to an extent...at least for casual listeners. I have a viewpoint for this. My understanding is that ARR used (let us assume) a 40 : 60% ratio of Live : Simulated instrumentation. The reason is that either the instruments were costly or unavailable in India, which explains why others didn't even think of it and also explains why Rahman sounded generationally different than others. He gradually turned the ratio on its head and now is using more and more live instrumentations and stuff. So, the ambience may be different. For normal users (like me) it sounds different I guess... If you take albums like AP or , you will find any given song to have more focus, sharper beats, less diffusion in instrumentation, well defined solos and all that... But listen to something like Boys, you will see some diffusion (I dont know how it is on high-end stereos and 4+ speaker setups) and the punchy sounds will not be as good as (say) Kadhalan or Jeans. The best comparisons would be with Zubeidaa (I feel the sound this has is like Unparalleled) and many others Dil Se, and many others in that time period. Disclaimer: This is just my view. I dont know anything about Music or how the Recording works. I have just written my observations... Thanks for reading. Glad that I am not the only one observing this. For a minute I thought I probably was high smoking something...Here is a partially conclusive thread following the release of Aah Aah, coincidentally started by StyleGamer :) http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/arrahmanfans/message/59148Bottomline is recent mixes sound too muddy irrespective of the monitors I have used for hearing the CD's. I will post my observations on GF once I get hold of the CD and do some hearing and spectral analysis. Technical crap coming throughFor the curious minds, I have few commercial and hand written tools which would go through audio data and plot frequency spectrogram, there by giving us an idea of how different elements in a mix fight with each other for attention. It can be used to fine tune final mixes. Even with these gizmos my mixes sometimes sound crappy, oh well, that is where talent comes in, I guess... In case of Aah Aah and MP, there was so much activity going on the mid frequencies which was not the case with say Dil Se or my favorite Thiruda Thiruda. I cannot say whether it is right or wrong, but it sure does sound different. Basically one major reason is because pyramid doesnt release cds anymore.They would do 24 bit processing and had high quality.Ayn quality is pretty crappy compared to pyramid. (i am talkin of hindi films basically , tamil may hve totally differant scenario). lemme site few examples ... take da case of `YUVA`- which is of course da film of our boss`s boss(mani ratnam) .. `SWADES` - da oscar director(ashuthosh gowaiker).. `MEENAXI` - da ever great piccasso of india (M.F.Hussain) ... `KISNA` - Da legendary director (subhash ghai) ..BOSE-da director with magical touch(shyam benegal) ... and now `RDB` -should i say something abou dis person (Rakesh om prakash) . SO ya can see da status he holds with da quality directors only his music has quality .. only his music hass tht magical appeal ... these directors made films so tht whn people see these films after years or even decades , it have da same quality in it .. thts why thse Yash raj or karan johar banners don approach our Guru .. cause thy wnt music which can have instant appeal , not forever appeal ... Lord Of The Rings' musical preview By JOHN COULBOURN - Toronto Sun TORONTO - Things were hopping in Middle-Earth yesterday -- hopping, flying, jumping and stilt-walking, too. As the first full week drew to a close of what will be many weeks of rehearsals for the upcoming stage production of Lord Of The Rings (opening in the Princess of Wales Theatre next March, after extensive previews), producers yesterday brought two of the show's key components together for a show-and-tell with Toronto media. With the extensive acting cast seated at the back of the Eastern Ave. studios where the specifics of the gravity of Middle-Earth are being created, the show's acrobats took centre stage to strut their stuff -- stuff which, according to the show's Circus Skills Consultant Alex Frith, has been developed over three weeks of intensive physical exploration. It's been a great thing, Frith said, pointing out that more than 1,000 acrobat/performers were auditioned to create a field of 50, so we've got the exceptional talent. So exceptional, in fact, that the one-time dancer/circus performer claims the most difficult thing about the process so far has been probably picking up and moving to Toronto (from London). Everything else is going well . At 54, actor Richard McMillan -- who plays evil wizard Saruman -- is one of the senior members of the acting company. Yesterday's high-flying demonstration left him more than a trifle breathless, despite the fact that he's a veteran of the theatrical production of The Lion King, in which he played Scar. I was terrified, at first, McMillan said after the demo, adding he's comforted by the fact that his character doesn't sing and dance. Gymnastics, no way, he added with a laugh. That doesn't mean there won't be risk-taking ahead in what is certain to prove to be a challenging undertaking for the acting company, as they distill three books into a three hour-plus stage show. Mostly, the challenge is going to be to enhance the contraction of the characters, McMillan said. In that, he thinks the entire company has a fine guide in director Matthew Warchus. You're lucky if you meet five directors in your life who have a profound influence on you, McMillan said. Matthew is one of them. Clearly, Toronto actor and funnyman Cliff Saunders, cast as part of the ensemble, concurs. I like this director, Saunders says. I like where he's coming from in terms of human emotion and what makes people behave in certain ways. As for the show itself, it's early days -- and Saunders is finding it a far cry from his work on Beauty And The Beast, which was already set when it came to Toronto. I like that I come in not knowing anything, he said. I don't know how it will be. We'll find out. In Canadian theatre, we're used to working like that. It's a style of work to which producer Kevin Wallace could obviously become happily accustomed. It's exhilarating, Wallace said enthusiastically of the process he's worked so hard to launch. I think we've all become aware of the diversity of the talent in this room. Everybody is feeding off each other. HiIthink so you never hear the songs properly. The songs is very very very very nice. After a long gap im hearibg a good kuthu song. All the song has its own style. Wow amazing song. No words to tell about the songs. I would like to advice you to hear it at least 7 to 8 times to feel the magic. Good music don't come straight away in the first hearing. The sight of music I am never tired of repeating the story of the Japanese listener who wrote in to All India Radio. He begged them not to change the timings of a filmi geet programme, because he could not go to sleep unless he heard it at bed time. In fact, AIR Shillong once got a request from a listener in Latin America who had got a freek reception of the same kind of programme. But this is radio, which carries all over the world mostly uncensored and freely available. The same could not be said of television where music has been the greatest causality. Private channels have no time for it and last time I heard it, DD's National Programme of music, a weekly late night show, was putting on the most medicore singers. Which was, however, better than the National Programme of Dance, where the middle aged wives of bureaucrats seemed to get priority. So it is with a happy frame of mind that in the recent past I have come across some welcome music of all types on TV. Don't ask me to name the channels because once the music starts I tend to close my eyes and relax. And in this sudden bonanza, I do not include the terrible Indian idol type music contests where the judges are even more suspect than the medicore singers who seem to score. And recently we have even had a regional row when, apparently, a singer from Assam was not considered an Indian. However, back to the good, unexpected music on TV. It started with the BBC, one week-end honouring Mozart in this special year, by putting on BBC World one of his concert in full. Surely it is a tribute to Rahindranath that two countries have adopted his songs as National Anthems. India with Jana mana and Bangladesh with Sheikh Mujeeb is favour to Amar Sonar Bangla. Quite something, isn't it? Joke of the week, on the a electable satirical programme Gustakhi Maaf of NDTV Hindi, Saurav Ganguly meets Inzamamul Haque, remarks they are two captains in trouble and Saurav warns aloo.
