Pure cinema moments in grim 'Water'By Subhash K. Jha, Film: "Water"; 
Starring Seema Biswas, John Abraham, Lisa Ray, Vinay Pathak, Manorama, Sarala, 
Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Raghuvir Yadav; Written & Directed by Deepa Mehta; 
Rating:  1/2

What do you say about a film that hits you hard where it hurts the most, so 
hard that it takes your breath away.

"Water" belongs to that rare category of films that have the power to redefine 
the parameters of cinema, to realign the function and purpose of the medium, 
and to restructure the way we, the audience, look at the picture experience.

It's no coincidence that Deepa Mehta's heroine is named Kalyani. Lisa Ray as 
the tragic but radiant widow seems to echo Nutan's Kalyani in Bimal Roy's 
"Bandini". The tragic grandeur that "Water" wears on its resplendent sleeve is 
a quality that sets it apart from other reformist dramas. 

The film has a great deal to say about the plight of socio-economically 
challenged women, specifically the widows of Varanasi in the 1930s. The burning 
ghats and the waters that flow from them symbolise the ashes-and-embers 
predicament of Mehta's ashram-bound women...all plagued by the pathos of 
dereliction, deprivation and, yes, prostitution.

In telling it like it is, Mehta never filches. Her elemental trilogy ("Fire", 
"Earth" and "Water") reflects a harshly uncompromising sensibility. In "Water", 
Mehta doesn't beautify the brutality of the widows' existence. 

There are bouts of humour, dance and music (watch Lisa Ray and little Sarala 
dance around their dingy room as the rain splashes romantically on the parched 
streets down below, or the eruption of Holi revelry in the ashram). A quality 
of luminous lyricism runs through the narration, especially in the romantic 
interludes between Narayan (John Abraham) and Kalyani (Lisa Ray), which are 
designed like a modern-day reworking of the Radha-Krishna mythology.

The sheer purity and beauty of the central romance contrasts tellingly with the 
squalid lives and settings that the plot negotiates. 

Giles Nuttgen's camera doesn't flinch from the beauty and the grime. The 
cinematography could've easily converted the multi-layered character-study into 
a touristic over-view. But Nuttgen takes us into the darkest areas of the human 
condition to search for the peace that prevails under the panic of existence. 
And A.R. Rahman's music, his best in years, uplifts the mood of tragic pathos.

Many moments in "Water" would comfortably qualify as pure cinema. That moment 
when the oldest woman in the ashram devours a laddoo that she had been craving 
for all her life could be seen as the most satirically tragic juncture in a 
film on socio-culturally challenged lives.

"Water" as the giver and the destroyer...that's the predominant metaphor that 
cuts through this tale. Each time we see the porcelain Kalyani peep out of her 
dungeon-like window, we know she's searching for a horizon that most of us 
never find in our lifetime.

"Water" contours and defines those glazed regions in our history that we would 
rather not sharp-focus on. In many ways its depiction of the plight of 
abandoned widows is a metaphor for the condition of women across the world, and 
also a microcosmic view of the human condition. 

The fine cast grabs your undivided attention. Seasoned performers like Manorama 
(playing the head of the ashram, she's a conniving scheming mass of vulgarity 
and self-interest), Seema Biswas (clenched and controlled) and Raghuvir Yadav 
(a singing eunuch) blend beautifully with the central love story embodied with 
supreme sensitivity in the John-Lisa pair.

And to think that we always thought of John and Lisa as actors incapable of 
overcoming their inherent urbanity!

It's Sarala as little Chuhiya whom you'll find hard to get out of your head. 
She is the most credible child performer on a par with Ayesha Kapoor in Sanjay 
Leela Bhansali's "Black". Normally children in Hindi films respond to adult 
situations in an unnaturally knowing way. Chuhiya remains a child caught in a 
frightening world of persecution and perversion.

Mehta inter-cuts the wretched lives of the characters with glimmers of hope. 
Even when Mahatma Gandhi makes an unexpected appearance at the end, the 
director doesn't allow her vision of poetry to be crowded by polemics.

While you grieve for doomed, disintegrating lives, you cannot miss the subtext 
of social reform that underlines their lives. 

What Mehta has to say about the plight of women in India 60 years ago remains 
true to this day. Hopefully, things will change before another 60 years pass. 
"Water" leaves us with much hope - and some frightening misgivings.

I admit, Rahman + Gulzar + Mani -- that's going to be spelling the Dil
Se magic again! 

However, I kind of disagree with your statement that Yuva was more
about rhythm. Yes - rhythm experimentation was huge  - the underground
beat effect in Dhol dhol, house and electro effect in Fannah, etc.
However, I believe it was actually more focused on the sound
engineering perspective, and experimenting with voice, instruments and
sound in general. For example, the combination of jazz with dance in
Anjana is a mindblowing creation..and just the overlap of the male and
female alaap before the 1st stage can blow everyone away! Think about
Rahman's alaap in Kabhi Neem neem -- a great tune with soothing
guitars..truly magical. And then think of the way he has used a rap
with classical, pop and bhangra touch to create the unbelievable Dhol
Dhol. Of course, the classical alaap in Fannah..the slap guitars in
Dhakka laga bhuka, the electronic mandolin in Badal...all wonderful
experiments..that raise the bar of sound mixing higher than ever.

I sort of understand your concern of the missing melodies in Yuva.
But, if one were to hear beyond the sound mixing, they would notice
that all of those creations are actually soaked in melody. Its just
that the overall result is just so above standard, that we don't
realize the marvel behind it!

SUPERSONIC ..although it a small sample its gr8 ...u can download the

[arr] Expectations for Guru's music are going to be HUGE!

Just think...Mani, Rahman, Gulzarback together.   Curious to 
know what will be the result. Have a feeling it will be fresh and given 
that the movie is a love story, we can hopefully look forward to some 
very melodious music (unlike Yuva which was more about rhythm).

One month later, the same jhalak dikhalajas is even out of their mobile phones. And if you have noticed, the movies of which the songs are on the top order can�t
 be even rated anywhere near bad. So producers harp on music that would bring in money.       Again, all these composers are hired just give music to the tracks and not the movie. Except the movies done by Rahman, most have the background scores by a different person. Here lies the difference. Rahman is involved in every aspect of the movie (and isn�t that the major factor that we even crave over his BGMs). He understands the movie and creates music keeping in the mind how the movie would be transitioning from start to end.      My strong belief, after watching movies like Aashiq banaya aapne et al (the fact that I couldn�t sit for the whole movie is an altogether different debatable topic) is that the composers
 have been hired and told �Give me numbers that would top the charts�. Otherwise, I couldn�t relate to any of the songs in these movies. On the contrary, while watching movies done by  our Boss, don�t we get carried away into the musical sphere?      Only good talented directors can ooze out the maximum from our Boss. I am not placing a doubt on his creativity but when he creates a song like Dil Ne Jisse Apna Kaha, it needs to be well placed in the movie. Merely inserting it in the middle of a scene, do not justifies. He should be working more with directors like Mani Ratnam, Rakesh Mehra, Ram Gopal Verma, Shankar etc. With Gods grace from nowhere he has reached everywhere. Now its time for him to be choosy and make music that would be remembered forever.

  crooning behind the mike for more than four decades, the honey-voiced K.J. 
  Yesudas, has planned to act in a film. Titled Koormam, he has penned the 
  story and a lot of newcomers are in the lead cast. K.R. Ramadas would be 
  the director. Yesudas’ role is held under wraps but the story would 
  revolve around the prevailing system of corruption and political 
  manipulations.As senior gets ready for a new avatar, junior is scaling 
  a milestone in his fledgling career. Yes…we are talking about Vijay 
  Yesudas. Son of K J Yesudas. Vijay Jesudas is going to sing in 
  Sivaji for Superstar. Davani potta Deepavali in Sanda Kozhi sung by Vijay 
  had impressed Superstar very much.
  He liked the song and requested AR Rahman to rope him in. 
  Vijay is excited about singing under AR Rahman’s and that too for 
  Superstar. Many of his father’s songs for Rajini are evergreen hits. All

Who’s the best? Do we have to debate     There have been countless discussions on this board as well as other places why songs like aashiq banaya aapne or jhalak dikhlaja win more hearts or rather top the charts than a wonderful composition like Lukka Chuppi or for that matter any song from RDB.      What I feel is its just waste of time comparing our Boss with new age composers like Reshammiya or whoever it is. Rahman has proved his point in India as well as overseas. He has composed tunes that we would keep humming for the rest of our lives and the generations to come.      I am not saying other composers are not blessed, they are, but they are more market savvy and believe in compositions that are here today, gone tomorrow. I do not fully blame these composers for this kind of attitude because I feel the generation is such. Being from Mumbai, I personally have seen including few of my friends who just want to groove. One month later, the same jhalak dikhalajas is even out of their mobile phones. And if you have noticed, the movies of which the songs are on the top order can’t be even rated anywhere near bad. So producers harp on music that would bring in money.     
 Again, all these composers are hired just give music to the tracks and not the movie. Except the movies done by Rahman, most have the background scores by a different person. Here lies the difference. Rahman is involved in every aspect of the movie (and isn’t that the major factor that we even crave over his BGMs). He understands the movie and creates music keeping in the mind how the movie would be transitioning from start to end.      My strong belief, after watching movies like Aashiq banaya aapne et al (the fact that I couldn’t sit for the whole movie is an altogether different debatable topic) is that the composers have been hired and told “Give me numbers that would top the charts”. Otherwise, I couldn’t relate to any of the songs in these movies. On the contrary, while watching movies done by
 our Boss, don’t we get carried away into the musical sphere?      Only good talented directors can ooze out the maximum from our Boss. I am not placing a doubt on his creativity but when he creates a song like Dil Ne Jisse Apna Kaha, it needs to be well placed in the movie. Merely inserting it in the middle of a scene, do not justifies. He should be working more with directors like Mani Ratnam, Rakesh Mehra, Ram Gopal Verma, Shankar etc. With Gods grace from nowhere he has reached everywhere. Now its time for him to be choosy and make music that would be remembered forever.      What’s say fans? Hi Fanz,

This is a list of movie types/genres/kinds that Rahman can consider 
scoring for, if it comes his way...

Please note that I am not saying he should (or should have) score(d) 
for the movies mentioned. I just gave an example or a reference.

1.  Full fledged Horror films - like Sixth Sense, Final Destination, 
The Ring, and many others.

2.  Action or Adventure type - like Indiana Jones, Tomb Raider, 
Spiderman, The Italian Job, MI, etc.

3.  Fantasy films - like Harry Potter or C.O.Narnia type. Even 
animation films like Finding Nemo, Ice Age, Polar Express etc.

4.  Science Fiction films - like The Time Machine, Back to the 
Future, ET, Jurassic Park, Anaconda etc.

There are not much Tamil or Hindi counterparts to the movies 
mentioned above. Some of the movies above were/are Trendsetters.

The only problem is that most of these movies require SFX or BGM type 
of "sounds" rather than Strong Melodies, which Rahman likes.

But they will provide a lot of variety. Most of these movies deal 
with situations, characters, or the world itself which are extremely 
different or non-existant. All this provides tremendous scope for 
experimentation to the extreme.

As for some Non-Film project...

1. What about Scoring for a Game? - NFS, T.Raider, Prince of Persia 
etc. are wonderful games which have plenty of scope for music.

Gaming industry is equally big and second only to (In the US) 
Hollywood. People like it when Music connects strongly with the 
Visual aspects of a game. So why not..??

And finally the one we are almost desparate for...

2. Some personal albums - The last I heard about "Conf. of the birds" 
is that it is still in consideration. Hope it works out.

Hey Good is always good, ARR knows it that it is a good song!Himesh is an ARR fan!I liked many of Himesh songs! his tunes are really good! but at some part he cant make songs with heart and soul like ARR.
himesh has talent. He is experimenting too much unlike Anu Malik and others!I think Himesh should develop his own style with difference and should produce new tunes!copying ARR is a good sign!Best luck to Himesh for his career!
