Naresh Iyer, he of the singular hairstyle and more important, singular style of
singing, made it big because of his talent. The 25 year old from Matunga,
Mumbai entered Channel V’s Super Singer contest competing with 25,000 other
contestants and was lucky enough to reach the final 25 but not the finals.
Still, Lady Luck smiled on him - big. He caught the attention of judges A.R.
Rahman and Adnan Sami. Rahman approached him and told the young man that he
would be recording with him soon. Iyer took the big chance, decided that he
would rather be a singer than a Chartered Accountant and went down to Chennai
to record.

Iyer has formally trained under Chintamani Gore and Sushila Mani. He has 500
stage shows under his belt with a theater group called Rangaat Productions.
Films are not new to him - he has already sung a song in the Tamil movie Anbe
Aaruyire. However, it was with Roobaroo, Tu bin bataye and Paathshala from Rang
De Basanti that his career took off and put him right up there among the galaxy
of promising, aspiring new singers in Bollywood. Iyer was so naive that he did
not know that he was singing for an Aamir Khan film when he recorded these
numbers! He reminisces that Roobaroo took nearly three hours to record and
singing ‘Tu bin bataye’ in a more muted, softer style was a worthy effort.

And his meeting with Rahman? He was nervous, of course but once he started
working, the nervousness vanished. He is all praise for Rahman and says Rahman
is the ‘father of the modern Bollywood sound’. He was delighted to meet Aamir
Khan at the studio and is thankful to both these very famous personalities for
having launched his career in a big way. He is also all praise for lyricist
Prasoon Joshi and enjoyed singing the numbers. In the meantime, he looks
forward to a very busy career in playback singing. So do his fans.

PHOTO CALL: Lord of the Rings Takes Over Toronto
By Morgan Allen18 Mar 2006

From Top: Peter Howe (left) and James Loye; Brent Carver in The Lord of the Rings.
The ambitious stage version of J.R.R. Tolkien's fictional series "The Lord of the Rings" – starring Tony nominee Brent Carver (Parade) - is currently running in Toronto, with an eye toward productions in London and the United States.

Deemed by producers to be neither a musical or a play, but a theatrical spectacle, estimates make the piece the most expensive production ever conceived for the stage. Mattew Warchus (Art, True West) directs a large cast that perform music by
A.R. Rahman (Bombay Dreams) and Vartinna, with a book and lyrics by Shaun McKenna and Warchus.
At left, Peter Howe (Sam) and James Loye (Frodo), as well as Carver (Gandalf) are seen in shots from the Toronto production. Below, one of the show's Black Riders is seen above a photo from one of the scenes that take place in the well-known Helm's Deep location from the novels.

[arr] Semi ARR- Christopher Nightingale, musical supervisor of LOTR

2006-03-19 Thread raj_d_kumar

-
To balance that music on the other end of the spectrum, the LOTR
team turned to the Indian composer A.R. Rahman. Chris Nightingale had
worked closely with Rahman as musical supervisor for the London
production of Bombay Dreams.

Yes, I'd been working with A.R. in London, and that experience made
me aware of what he is capable of. A brilliant composer, but also a
wonderful chameleon, capable of taking on many colours - of absorbing
and transforming any music, any style and giving it his own, unique
signature

I spent a lot of time in Finland with Värttinä and a lot of time in
India with A.R. Rahman – long before any work began in Toronto –
talking over the show, exchanging ideas. I'd bring things from
Värttinä to A.R., and from A.R. back to Värttinä… and take ideas from
all of them back to London, to Matthew and to Rob Howell, the
designer. A wonderful thing about this experience is the way all
elements of the show have influenced the development of each other as
they've evolved; Rob Howell will hear something in the music that
affects his ideas about the set and costume design; the composers will
see something in Rob's drawings that gives them a new idea about the
music; everything has grown together, building a whole and complete
new world. In the finished score, I hope there will be no song you can
point to and say `that's by A.R. Rahman,' or `that's by Värttinä.' You
may hear a melody originally written by Rahman, but to which Värttinä
has applied its own, unique interpretation, and vice-versa. In the
end, these two very distinctive composers have come together to share
a vision of the oneness – and complexity – of this imaginary world
that their music has brought into reality.

  Complete Transcript below

Christopher Nightingale is the orchestrator and musical supervisor of
The Lord of the Rings, the person responsible for the music of
Middle-earth. He worked with the composers – A.R. Rahman and Värttinä
over the course of two years and the music would not be there without
him. Chris is one of theatre's most experienced and highly regarded
masters of his craft, with past credits that include some of West End
London's best plays and musicals, despite his never having imagined a
career for himself in either theatre or music.

I didn't set out to pursue a career in music. In fact I studied
sciences. I did have a musical background - and I went to Cambridge on
an organ scholarship – but I took a degree in Natural Sciences.
However, it was at Cambridge that I discovered how much I loved the
theatre when I became involved with the Footlights, the amateur
theatre club at the university. The truth is that I spent a good deal
of the time I should have spent with my science books playing the
piano with the Footlights, instead.

Actually, Chris Nightingale did far more than just play the piano. He
was musical director of the Footlights for three years – and the
Footlights was (and is) far more than an amateur theatre club; it
has provided Britain's professional theatre with some of its brightest
talent for more than 120 years.

Going into the theatre wasn't a conscious choice, but when the
opportunity came along, it felt like the right thing to do. After
university, I messed around for a bit, playing piano here and there,
skiing… and then Richard Brown, who's working with me now on The Lord
of the Rings, gave me a job playing piano at the Royal Shakespeare
Company. And here I still am, sitting at a piano in a theatre, almost
20 years later.

But even 20 years of theatre experience wasn't quite enough to prepare
Chris fully for the proposal he would receive from producer Kevin Wallace.

I had worked with Kevin before but when he first approached me to ask
what I thought of the idea of a stage production ofTolkien's books,
possibly a musical, my first reaction - and I think it was our
director, Matthew Warchus's as well - was `You've got to be kidding!
The idea is crazy!'

I found it difficult to imagine The Lord of the Rings as a stage
production - the work is so vast - how would you put a thousand pages
of text into a theatre? But I found it impossible to imagine it as a
musical. How could you find a route in - musically – that could do
this work justice, and avoid cliché and cuteness? Frodo singing about
how heavy the ring is and how he just can't go on? It seemed to me
like a very bad idea.

Then I looked back at the books. I had forgotten how filled with
music they are. Music - both literally and as metaphor - is central to
the tale. In The Silmarillion, Tolkien's introduction to his imaginary
universe, Middle-earth is called into being in song, and each new act
of creation - of Elves, Men, Dwarves - is a new theme in a divine
symphony. Evil is introduced into the world as a discordant theme that
disrupts the harmony. Musically, perhaps the whole project wasn't such
a bad idea, after all. I

`Rang De Basanti' celebrates 50 days
IndiaGlitz [Saturday, March 18, 2006]

This festive season of 'Holi', come and celebrate it with colors with
'Rang De Basanti'.

The film has now completed 50 days and is still going strong in its
8th week. With a tax free status further boosting its collections at
number of screens, the film is now enjoying a worldwide success. The
movie has done well not just in India but is a superhit overseas too,
especially in US and UK.

Also the music is topping the charts all over with A.R.Rehman getting
his much elusive hit after twin debacle in the shape of historical
'Bose - The Forgotten Hero' and 'Mangal Pandey - The Rising'.

[arr] ARR for Vikraman-Bharath Tamil film?

2006-03-19 Thread stharirahman
I saw in Vaaramalar - suplement of Dinamalar newspaper that ARR will
score Music for a Bharath(Boys) film directed by Vikraman. Also i
gathered various news abot that film. Title will be 'Chennai Kaadhal'
and the producer will be Kalaipuli S.Dhanu.

Vikraman join with A.R.Rahman after a long. Pudhiya Mannargal is the
previous film. it was a musical hit but the film didn't so.
will 'Chennai Kaadhal' be a hit for both?

Anybody know is it confirm?

[arr] ARR offered a Kannada film

2006-03-19 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
Puneet gets a rare gift

Puneet Rajkumar who recently celebrated his birthday, wouldn’t have ever
imagined being gifted a movie! That’s what a popular producer and director from
Chennai offered Puneet when they came down last week. To be produced in
Kannada, the film is to be directed by Pratap Pothen, while talks are on with
AR Rahman to score the music for the film. The film is yet to be titled and the
heroine is also being finalised. The industry buzz is that Ramya is being
considered for the role as the producers had expressed their liking for her
after watching her in Akash. Meanwhile, Puneet seems like one happy man. “I’m
fortunate to have been part of good projects and will continue doing good work
in future too. Yes, talks are on with a big banner and if it gets confirmed,
the project will be something new for our screen. But I’m really happy they’re
considering me for it.” Way to go Puns!

Unarguably India's best music composer today, AR
Rahman is back in the hot
seat with his score in Rang De Basanti. Jitesh
 Pillaai exchanges notes with
the maverick musician TIMES NEWS NETWORK

He's pushing 40, going on 25. His chocolate
 mousse voice gently glides
through the room. A bit like his entire demeanour.
 Sorry for the delay,
just have a lot of things to catch up on, he
apologises as I grab a few
minutes with the man who is unarguably India's
 best music composer today, on
what is yet another whirlwind stopover for him.
 His current topnotcher, Rang
De Basanti, has yet again perked up the stagnant
 genre monopolised by the
  nasalcrooning variety of musicians.
But that's another story. There's yet another
 apocryphal tale which
bears repetition. At the height of the film
 industry strike in Chennai about
five years ago, his mentor, Mani Ratnam, was
waiting for the music wiz to
complete the soundtrack of Alay Payuthe. Ratnam is
 reported to have
deadpanned, I can either handle the strike or
 Rahman. Not both
  simultaneously, please.
That then is the magic of Allah Rakha Rahman.
 Another industry joke
that's often pulled is that after God, Rahman is
 the greatest leveller. Be
it Mani Ratnam, Shyam Benegal, Ashutosh Gowariker
 or Shankar, they all wait
for him. Time no bar. Music bar bar. You've heard
 the story about him
playing the piano when he was all of four. Years
 later, after rigorously
dabbling in the world of 30-second jingles and
 moonlighting as a musician
with composer Illayaraja, he was ready to fly solo
 and test his mtier. Came
Roja in 1993. Rahman smiles, The songs were
composed in a small room. I
kept thinking that people would hate the music. By
the grace of God, it was
liked so much that I even went on to win my first
 National Award for the
  film.
About Ratnam, Rahman says that he just allows
 him to do whatever he
wishes and then chooses the best. Rahman recalls,
 Even when we were
composing Jiya jale in Dil Se, I felt a lot of
 Mallu 'Moplah' tunes coming
into my head, Mani said, 'no problem, I'll change
 my character (Preity
Zinta) into a Malayalee girl' and it all sort of
 fell into place.
It all also fell into place with Rang De
 Basanti circa 2005. When
Rakeysh Mehra greenlighted the film about two
 years ago, Rahman had given
him a scratch tune. When Mehra started the film,
 he was stuck for a
background tune in the climax, miraculously, the
 tune which Rahman had
composed earlier became the leitmotif. Just like
 that. Rahman smiles that
gentle smile of his, Mehra is a lot like Mani. He
just lets me do my own
thing. When I composed Paathshala with words like
 'lose control', I thought
he'd change it into Hindi. But Mehra stuck to it,
 saying that the only time
his assistant came into his room was when he
 played that tune. So obviously
he was sticking to the vibe. When Rahman
 composes, synthesisers meld into
guitars, the dholaks blend with the keyboards.
 Fusing the music of different
traditions, Rahman straddles the world of Bach and
 Carnatic music with easy
facility. Among his oeuvre, his personal
 favourites include Roja, Muthu,
  Lagaan, Dil Se and
Taal. But it was also the musical cadences of
 Gentleman, Kaadhalan,
  Rangeela, Thiruda Thiruda, Kandukondain
 Kandukondain and Alay Payuthe that
burned up the barcodes in music stores. Born a
 Hindu, AS Dilip Kumar
converted to Islam and the AR Rahman moniker a
 decade ago, his music is
inspired by Sufi mysticism. It's reported that
 after all the hard times
after his father's death, Rahman and his family
 found solace in Karimullah
Shah Kadiri, a Sufi spiritual healer.
Reportedly, he's sold more than 100 million
 albums, won scores of Filmfare
and National awards. His success prompts him to
 stay connected to his God.
Your faith keeps you focused. You never grow big
 by putting other people
down, he sallies. Talk again veers to the
 drubbing of
  Mangal Pandey,
when it was loudly asserted that Rahman had lost
 his touch. He is
unequivocal, I did my best. Maybe, it was too
 folksy, too much of
  in-your-face patriotism
But in a capricious industry dictated by the
 ticket windows, all's well
after Rang De Basanti. The self-effacing composer
 tells me that he's just
read a signboard outside a church in Bandra,
 Mumbai. He says casually, It
says, 'If you start judging people, you won't have
 time to love'. That's so
true, the mind then loses its serenity, its
naivete. I think to compose you
need to have a purity of being. I also try to find
 that purity in music.
  Just before
