Indeed, due to such varied forces as the Internet, digital technology and continued cross-cultural pollination, more Americans are grooving to world-music styles today than they were 10 years ago. Or even five years ago. One form that has burrowed into the American pop-culture consciousness in the last couple of years is Indian music. And, within the broader Indian-music scene, one sub-genre getting attention is the fusion of classical Indian music with modern rhythms. Perhaps the most accomplished of these fusionists is A.R. Rahman, who began his career as a writer of commercial jingles and went on to become India's most popular composer of film scores. Until the last year, Rahman's biggest claim to fame was his collaboration with Andrew Lloyd Webber on the London and Broadway productions of "Bombay Dreams'' in 2002 and 2004, respectively. Webber produced, Rahman composed the music. But Rahman's profile got even higher when he struck the seeming unlikely collaboration with the Finnish folk group Varttina to compose the music for the $23 million, four-hour-long stage production of "Lord of the Rings,'' which opened in Toronto on March 23. Rahman's unique synthesis of traditional Indian music with more contemporary rhythms inspired Sidney Fallon, wife of Eastern Michigan University president John Fallon III, to seek out a meeting with Rahman during a recent trip to India. Rahman and the Fallons had a mutual Indian acquaintance, and the three parties began discussing ways for young Americans to learn more about Indian culture. They decided on a pair of benefit concerts by Rahman and fellow Indian artists Sekar, Kalish Kher and Vasundhara Das. The first concert will be at the EMU Convocation Center on Saturday, the second in Dayton, Ohio on April 22. The show, "Wake Up! A.R. Rahman with 150 All Stars,'' will bring together Rahman's works on stage through colorful costumes and set designs, along with Indian and American singers and dancers. Rahman also will perform with the Global Rhythm All Stars, a group of more than 150 American artists that have performed with numerous Grammy-winning artists. TRADE TALK - Smile, Bollywood! The year's first quarter rocks at the box-office I Diganta Guha Hindustan Times I t's April and Bollywood is smiling. The year's first quarter -even with March not having too many releases due to exams -- has been encouraging. The January jinx was broken with Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's Rang De Basanti -- the first superhit film this year. It's a hit mainly in the cities, says trade expert Komal Nahta. But figures are heartening. RDB has earned Rs 65 crore overall and the numbers are growing. A surprise hit has been Priyadarshan's comedy Malamaal Weekly, which experts say, is 2006's first universal hit. A small-budget film (Rs 6 crore), it has already earned Rs 12 crore overall. What is interesting is that small, experimental films have been appreciated. While Malamaal Weekly, with no stars, worked well, an even smaller Mixed Doubles, Rajat Kapoor's wife-swapping tale, did better than expected. Made on a budget of Rs 1.5 crore, it earned around Rs 3 crore (no release abroad). Homi Adajania's dark comedy Being Cyrus, with a budget of Rs 3 crore has earned Rs 6 crore in two weeks. Nahta points out that even Ananth Mahadevan's Emraan Hashmi starrer Aksar has done reasonable business. It's more because of the music. It's helped the film recover its costs. Another hit, in select places, has been Milan Luthria's Taxi No 9 2 11. Taxi... It has already earned around Rs 9 crore at the domestic box office. Compare these figures with last year. Around the same time in 2005 we had just two successes -- Page 3 and Black. The rest flopped. Hi All, I was reading some of the Interviews given by ARR, He has particularly expressed his Regret over doing Period Films. That was surprising to me !! I was actually thinking, he wud have been looking fwd to do those kind of movies like - Bose, Mangal Pandey, Bhagat Singh etc., instead of doing movies which dont have any gr8 storyline / theme ( like Kadhal Desam, Kadhalan etc.) Pls see the followong lines i took from that interview.. Then when director Ketan Mehta and Aamir Khan came to me I quite liked the interpretation. So we plunged into it. Before that I was like...'Oh no, not another period film! Just to share something..yesterday i was watching a show on honouring Mellisai Mannargal MS Vishvanathan n TK Ramamoorthy on astro. All the biggies were there like Bala MuraliKrishna, director SP Muthuraman, Vaali, Ilayaraja, p.Susheela, SPB, PB SRinivas, TMS n also ARR. They were giving speech n appreciated the MSVR for the contribution on tamil music industry those time. What i noticed was all of them were appreciating ARR also of his contributions in tamil music industry recently including IR in their speech after they appreciate MSVR. IR said after him, its only ARR is rocking music industry not only in India but in international level. He said he is proud to say ARR is once his student n assistant n he also claimed that all of theirs contribution were from MSVR. Even Vaali also said that ARR is doing great job n praised him alot. When MSV start to talk, he call ARR hug him n kiss him said that he is the most talented musician after them now. He said he was satisfied with work done by ARR in recreating new tune for Thottal Poo malarum from New. He said it is better then his song in original one. When TK Ramamoorthy gave speech he said ARR have worked with him since small age n he said that ARR is the best keyboardist ever he know in tamil music industry. Both of them hug him n praised him a lot untill it shows clearly that some drop of tears came down from ARR's eyes. Its really a big honouring that ARR got when the two legends (MSVR n IR) praised him a lot. I was touched with the moments showed there. I think its a new show but it should be after ARR's film New.
