[arr] A note on a pilgrimage

2007-01-07 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
Dear friends,

When we set out to raise funds for the A.R.Rahman Foundation as a gift for
ARR's birthday, I
had only planned to send him an image of the cheque by email and the physical
cheque only by
courier. But when the contributions soared past anything I had hoped for, I
felt it was only
fair that it be handed over in person. And so, I set out to Chennai on Saturday
morning not
knowing if I would actually be able to meet him. Though by now, we have seen
enough evidence of
his simplicity I imagined being stopped by security guards even before I could
let him know,
all of which was completely unwarranted.

Thanks to the never-say-no graciousness of ARR and Vijay's entreaties, I had
the good fortune
of being your representative at the birthday celebrations of the person whom
many of us deify.
Far from being met with for a few seconds and summarily dismissed, I was
treated with the same
affection, care and love by everyone at his home and studio as were many of the
key
personalities of the industry who made their way to his abode to greet him in
person.

I made my way to his home with some navigational aid from Vijay to only find a
bunch of busy
workers setting up the place in preparation for lunch. When I said that I had
to meet ARR Sir,
I was asked to wait in the first floor of the studio which is the building
right in front of
his home. I made my way there to find many people doing the same, some of them
being Mr.
Srinivasa Krishnan of Global Rhythms, Sridhar Subramaniam of Sony BMG, Naresh
Iyer, executives
from WorldSpace and Saregama and producers from the Tamil industry whom I did
not recognize. I
could see gifts of flowers from a host of people from the industry - Subhash
Ghai, Udit and
Deepa Narayan, Rajkumar Santoshi, Bharat and Kanika, Chinmayee, Radio Mirchi,
Radio City were
some names that I managed to spot amidst the sea of bouquets in the studio.
ARR's right hand
men Noell James, Sivakumar, Swamidorai, Faiz and H. Sridhar were also in
attendance.

We were soon joined by ARR's mother, daughters, son, wife and sisters and
others in the family.
I soon realized that simplicity and humility runs through every brick and body
in his home and
studio. ARR still hadn't turned up and his mother insisted that we must have
lunch and we were
ushered back into his home where ARR joined us. Soon director Shankar and
family, Kathir,
Krishna (of SOK), Praveenkanth made their way in. After lunch we made our back
to the studio,
were ARR took us to a large studio room on the 2nd floor and screened the video
of Pray For Me
Brother. I am still searching for words to describe the multiple exhilarating
emotions that
passed through me as I watched the video. Nothing we have heard so far in the
live performances
truly captures the brilliance of the recorded song. Who else, but ARR, could
have an Indian
classical harmony accompanying a rap segment?

Following this, both ARR and his son Ameen, who also celebrates his birthday on
the same day,
cut the cake jointly. While his son wanted to cut his special 'Spiderman'
shaped cake, ARR
decided his simpler cake was more appropriate :-)

Coming to the crux of my visit, it was the time after the birthday cake was
distributed and
everyone was leisurely seated around the studio that I chose to hand the cheque
over to ARR. I
wish I could say, 'Did we spring a surprise on ARR or what!' But ARR instead
sprang a surprise
on me! He looked visibly moved and said 'I have been telling these folks what
you guys have
been doing.' I went, Huh? And his response was, 'I was on the group last
night and saw all
these messages about a collection drive. You guys are increasing my
responsibilities now'. I
quickly assured him that he could count on our support in anything that he
wanted to do. he
then handed the cheque over to his mother and introduced me to the rest of the
people there.

He then asked, 'Don't you want a picture?'. I joked, 'I would like you to say a
few words or
else all the folks would think I made off with the money'. He laughed and
agreed. I told him I
could wait till the studio was a little quieter. He said fine and went on to
have a private
conversation with Shankar and then moved away to supervise some dubbing work
for Guru that was
underway at the studio.

Before he left, I mustered the courage to ask him if there was any way I could
get another look
at Pray For Me Brother, to which his reaction was, 'Of course, why even ask?'
and asked Abdul
from the studio to screen it for me in one of the smaller rooms.

I was waiting around the studio for a while when a Jaya TV crew trudged in for
a sound bite.
Soon thereafter he came down and shot with them. Then he turned to me and
asked, 'Can we shoot
now?' And thus was marked another momentous occasion in the history of this fan
community.

I don't think I can ever thank all of you out there enough for having given me
the privilege of
undergoing this experience. I sincerely

2007-01-07 Thread Adi

I think this write-up of Gopal's summarises the group's seriousness in our
love for Rahman. A one and a half lakh plus of money is certainly no joke.
And like Gopal said, we stood up when it mattered. And if there's anything
else that we can do WE ARE ALWAYS READY. Right everybody?!!

Thanks Gopal for handing over the cheque in-person. That's the kind of
passion you as a leader of this group can show, then it only increases our
faith in doing more for Rahman everytime. Also, Gopal, you have shown
immense care in handling all the money and putting it across in the best
fashion that could have been done. Kudos to you and for the noble initiative
that you have taken!

Really proud to be an A R Rahman fan!

Love,
Adi.

members of this noble community. Achieving an amount of 1,60,000 within few
days is not an easy task, but it all happened well with your maximum effort and
uninterrupted reply and concern. It’s not about how much we are contributing,
but it’s all about why and what for we are contributing.

This single event alone shows how much we trust and Love A.R.Rahman sir.
Anyways this is not goanna be the last time, there are plenty of opportunities
where by we can show our gratitude to our boss. I earnestly request and pray
that we all should be united and stand together as always and help and support
the poor and needy along with Rahman Sir.

A whole lot of thanks and appreciation to Gopal !! We salute your sincerity !!

Last but not least I would like to thank all the members of this group who
donated generously and also thank those who thought of donating but couldn’t
make it due to various reasons. Thanks a lot!! I am proud to be a part of this
foundation. From now on stop using yahoo fan group, instead mention “The
A.R.Rahman Fans Foundation”. (Personal Opinion)

Long Live Rahman Sir, may his music bring joy and peace to this entire world !!

Love you all !!

[arr] Music with a cause

2007-01-07 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
 Music with a cause
The Capital made most of the season with a dose of charity as a mobile phone
giant teamed up
with a composer to launch a fundraiser; even as a bridal extravaganza and a
felicitation for a
noted sports personality kept the city otherwise occupied. Mumbai partied at
its own pace as
yet another actor launched his signature label of clothing
(From top): John Abraham and Hema Malini; father-son duo Milkha Singh (right)
and Chiranjeev
Milkha Singh; A.R. Rahman at the Nokia do; Divya Gurwara (second from left),
CEO, Bridal Asia
with models

What do you get when an ace musician teams up with a giant mobile company? You
get a great
music video on your mobile phone — and in all probability it’s music with a
cause.

Last week, A.R. Rahman and Nokia Nseries launched an English music video that
the composer has
put together exclusively for the mobile brand. Shot on the mobile cinemascope
format by
Bharatbala of Vande Mataram fame and penned by BlaaZe, Pray for Me, Brother
unveils a
fund-raising campaign spearheaded by the A. R. Rahman Foundation and Nokia. The
attempt will be
to raise funds for the underprivileged.

To support the cause, Nokia Nseries and A.R. Rahman are also poised to unveil a
website,
www.prayformebrother.com, where those interested in donating can log on. “The
music video will
be available soon on Nokia Nseries phones before being released for
television,” said Vineet
Taneja, director, multimedia, Nokia India. The video will be preloaded on the
N91, N70 and N73
phones.

Rahman looked pleased as punch as he talked about the video. “It took us two
years to bring it
to life. While I was working on it, I didn’t realise that it would go so far.
We thought that
the song deserved a great album and Nokia came forward to fund it and also to
make it available
on its music phones,” said Rahman.

The song was originally composed as an anti-poverty anthem for the UN’s
Millennium Development
Goals. The video, that’s shot in New York, shows the contrast between the Big
Apple skyscrapers
and men who look minuscule against the towering buildings. The attempt is to
reiterate the
sharp distinction between the riches and the poverty that exists around the
world.

“Pray for Me Brother will be the world’s first ever music video on vertical
cinemascope to be
put on music edition devices. It’s another add-on for our customers,” Taneja
added.

2007-01-07 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
To reiterate what Vijay has stated, please go all out to publicize the
fact that ARR will soon have his own official website, through your
blogs, posts on other forums, word of mouth etc.

We also value your feedback on the website, it will be given serious
thought and consideration. Please feel to comment on all aspects -
features, content, navigation, user interface and so on. The website
will go live in a phased manner.

Please note that the overall design concept is in harmony with ARR's
personal beliefs and preferences, as it rightfully should be given
that this will be HIS website. Therefore, while commenting on this
aspect please attempt to constructively enhance the same rather than
suggesting an entirely different approach.

[arr] Happy Birthday Guru

2007-01-07 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
Happy Birthday Guru

(This post was written one year ago on the same day, for its the birthday of
The Boss, AR
RAHMAN. It is only apt that the Boss is now changed to Guru)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BOSS

A lone boat on the sun kissed waters, makes the ripples ripple a ripple more.
When all of
life’s oh-no’s, why’s, some-other-day’s come to a halt and celebrate life.

A smile that refuses to leave the aching face, makes you wonder whether it is
worth caring and
thinking all that and all those we think and ponder about all the time. For no
one goes home
with you except the reason you smiled today. Water that flows without the fear
of losing
ground, like it will always keep falling like the way it does, it will not tear
the heart of
the earth or spoil the clothes. Water in which I saw all the colors of life,
untainted by
anything that could taint water- its music, its melody and its integrity and
purity. I want to
get up and jump like no one is looking, keep making circles on the sand with my
index finger
till the wave washes it away, the circles keep getting deeper without the fear
of an impending
loss of identity, may be identity for them meant blending in a bigger, more
real reality…

There is more than images and visual imagination that Rahman’s music generates,
it is a world
indescribable in words, something that can be felt like having a chocolate
ice-cream or the
first kiss. I have followed his music since I was 13, and it has been a
constant presence in my
life ever since. All these years, Rahman music movies and songs have been
knitted in my
memories of school days, friends, girls, movies and my frequent relocations.
Every song every note is etched like a brass impression, bringing back times in
their exact
color and sound. When I hear a Rangeela, I remember the day I bought the tape
from hard-saved
money, got it home, played it aloud on my 32 watts Philips tape, drew the
curtains and started
dancing like crazy. People said it was different but I got what I had ordered,
every month I
used to wait for the next Rahman release, drove all the music shops in town
crazy by calling
them umpteen times. The movies have changed, people have changed, the scene is
different but my
association with his music remains the same, innocent and independent of what
the world thinks
or says.

I still run to grab that first copy of his tapes in town, still cant do
anything before I
listen to the tape at least two or three times, and pass my pre-decided verdict
that it is
vintage Rahman, period.

May he live on and on and keep creating the magic over and over, so that one
day when I am 98,
I will tell ultracool kids of the future, “this tape of Bombay that you see, is
the first tape
that I bought way back in the summer of 1994, it cost Rs 28 then, and it meant
Magic for me
then, it means Magic for me now.”

I will have to agree with music award. in fact Omkara is a great
album. I am not comparing RDB and Omkara. while RDB attracted the
youth, Omkara is loved by the matured. so there is nothing wrong in
giving it to Vishal Bharadwaj

but the funny part of the award is giving best Actor award to
Hrithik roshan for his performance in the world's worst movie i have
ever seen.. Krish! that was a real joke.. I didn't know flexing

well, its not a matter to discuss here though..

[arr] Rahman in Saarang 2007 ???

2007-01-07 Thread logesh kum-arr

Check this out : read the last statement

http://www.saarang.org/07/Pro-Shows/This+Year

Pro Shows 2007 Global Rhythms

Global Rhythms has been in the news lately with several collaborative
exercises with AR Rahman, most recently at the Hollywood Bowl in July 2006.
Global Rhythms is a combination of traditional and non-traditional music
from all over the world. A concept conceived by Miami Alumnus Srinivas
Krishnan in close collaboration with Pamela Fox, Pat Hernly and Jason Koontz
in the year 1996, the project aims to integrate sounds from all over the
world and create music that utilizes an eclectic blend of Middle Eastern,
Caribbean, Indian, African, Brazilian, Latin, Australian, and Western
instrumentation and their team has been invited as a result to Cornell, MIT,
Harvard, Dartmouth, the Vatican, Hollywood Bowl to name a few. There are
over 140 members within Global Rhythms today and what makes them unique is
their ability to embrace every kind of music within their repertoire.

This ensemble has performed in concert with over 50 guest artists from all
over the world including Grammy winners Horacio Hernandez, Eguie Castrillo,
and Glen Velez, mridangam vidwan Sri Umayalpuram Sivaraman from India, and
over a year ago, they combined with Ghatam Karthick, Embar Kannan, Poongulam
Subramaniam and Mandolin U.P. Raju (part of Heartbeat Ensemble).

Global Rhythms benefits from the experiences of music professors Ethan
Sperry and Roger Davis, its co-directors. Davis' experiences lie in the bass
guitar and musical arrangements while Sperry specializes in vocals. The
talent these instructors possess echoes in the unique and beautiful sound
Global Rhythms plays for its audiences. But what makes Global Rhythms so
unique is that they can give a whole one hour show focusing entirely on
percussion or an hour show focusing on voice (they have a 100 piece choir).

Earlier in August 2006, the US Consulate had honored AR Rahman and Srinivas
Krishnan for their collaborative work through Global Rhythms over four
years. Rahman's contribution is significant because it has allowed for the
members of Global Rhythms to adventure and explore every kind of music and
each show with Rahman has opened new doors for over 350 members of Global
Rhythms over the four years. On January 25, 2007, IIT MADRAS will feature
Global Rhythms that will feature a total of 18 artists who will present a
whole range of music, catering to the needs of an Indian Audience. The
concert will highlight percussion instruments and will aim at sowing a new
seed of world music in Chennai. Five of the band members including Patrick
Hernly, Jeff Queen, TJ Hartman and James Sparling were recently featured
live in concert with AR Rahman and Sivamani in Mumbai over New Years Eve and
their skills in a range of percussion traditions will certainly make for an
attractive concert more so because they are now combining with some of the
best artists from India that evening including Ghatam Karthick's team. The
oboe, saxophone and the flute that are woodwind instruments will also be
integral to the show and feature Carrie Hernly, Leigh Ann Woodard and Seetha
Shivaswamy. Cleve Johnson who is a scholar in Carnatic Music will also be
part of this team on the keyboard and a dance trio team of Suzanne Maier,
Melissa Jungles and Tami Robinson will be part of a class act that will end
the show that evening with music of Chennai's very own AR Rahman.

2007-01-07 Thread Mirza G. Munas

Following is a post I made regarding the an official website on 13th November,
2005.

Re: [arr] ARR fans deserve respect from Music Companies !!

Its wired but just soon after reading your mail I realised a similar post that I
made on this
group never made it. I don't know why. I am mailing a copy of this mail to you..
just in case if it
doesn't get posted online... I made almost similar suggestions.. but not
to get the
respect from music companies but to be recognised that ARR has fans all
over the world..
who are not born an Indian nor they speak Tamil I think he could stand high
with an official
website... if that.. all the rumours about tax problems... the now-on, no-off
projects like
WATER.. and the unheard BOSE... all the problems including the demand of BGM of
any movie can
brought to a stop... Imagine if we can buy his music online.. so that a fan in
Africa doesn't need
to find a shop which sells Indian Music... Imagine Pre-Ordering CD's even before
the songs are
finalised I will definitely order each and every music that ARR releases...
I will be glad to
leave my Credit Card details at his website that everytime he releases a single,
album, Original
Sound Track for a movie.. or even a musical that I will be one of those first
person to receive it
first... if each and every fan of his does this he will have a guaranteed sale
(of I DON'T KNOW
HOW MUCH) even before the songs are released... When I met ARR for the first
time and since then
it has been the last time at Tower Records, Picadilly Circus in London (at the
autograph session
of Bombay Dreams)... I never had the opportunity of mentioning this to
ARR... cause for the
very first time I was surrounded with cameras and I was left speechless next
time I meet him I
will definitely will try mentioning that to ARR... as I am in the Web industry I
know what kind of
potential that it could bring to his career...

Regards,

Mirza from London

[arr] Guru is about rediscovering life

2007-01-07 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
‘Guru is about rediscovering life’
Screen On Off
A.R. RAHMAN tells Pratim D. Gupta why the sky is the limit with Mani Ratnam,
why he picked Luka
chhupi, Chhan chhan and Khalbali for the Oscars, his UN song, making music with
Nelly Furtado
and more
Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai in Guru

What is it about Mani Ratnam that makes you reserve your best for him?

I think it’s the vibe. The vibe is very important when two creative people work
together. It is
not about egos. It is about working towards the same goal, reaching the same
result. Then
again, I don’t reserve anything special for him (laughs). It so happens. It’s
how you get
inspired by each other.

What is the process? How do the two of you approach a film score?

It’s just that once the film is decided he gives opportunities to come up with
ideas. Not just
me, whether it’s the cameraman, the actors, everyone. He pushes the ball in
your court and then
you go about working on it. Then he comes back when things need to be tweaked
around, to be
made better.

This is very unlike certain other directors, who would say: “I want this and I
don’t want
anything else”. There you already have the boundaries. Here, with Mani, the sky
is the limit.
You can think about weird things also and he always wants to do work which is
groundbreaking.
It’s not that you have to work hard or anything. It just comes naturally with
him.

Yuva, your last work with him, had a very Bengali setting. What about Guru?

It’s actually more Gujarati. It’s more close to Mumbai than anything else. We
wanted to do one
song like Govinda ala re kind of thing but that didn’t fit into the script. So
we used that
sound and feel in the first song which is Barso re megha megha. That’s where
all the big drums
came in from. So, it was done for a different song but it fitted into that.
It’s all Gujarat.
So there was no problem.

Mayya mayya is on the lines of Hamma hamma and Chaiyya chaiyya. When you create
an item number
like that do you keep the popularity aspect in mind?

In the sub-conscious mind you would want the song to become popular. That’s the
whole reason of
doing a number like that. People should sing and enjoy. So we put in all into
that. For Mayya
mayya, I took the hook from a man who was shouting “mayya mayya” on the road
when I was on the
road to Haj. The word “mayya” means water in Arabic and he was selling water.
Then later in
Mayya mayya we have even added some Gujarati lines because of the characters
present in the
picturisation.

Tere bina is your tribute to the great Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan…

Yes, when I was doing the soundtrack of Guru, I was listening to Nusratsaab’s
Sajna tere bina.
And I thought there was no such song which had come into Hindi films. You know
in terms of the
feel. So I thought it would be great to use a song like that in this film. And
I even used the
same kind of lyrics, Tere bina… and it fell into the whole groove in a very
different way for
the film. But I would say the inspiration was definitely Nusratsaab’s music and
his style of
singing.

You didn’t know a word of Hindi when you started out. These days, you seem to
contribute to the
lyrics…

(Laughs) It’s good to work with people who are filled vessels like Gulzarsaab.
They are so calm
and yet the little, little things they do are fantastic. Tere bina is so simple
the way he’s
written it. Yet it complements the whole setting so beautifully. And he never
tries to do
something which is great and show the world what he can write. It’s all from
the heart.

Why get someone like Bappi Lahiri to sing the Guru title track?

I was at an award function in 2005 and I heard him sing on stage and I found
his vocals to be
very dynamic. We intended Abhishek (Bachchan) to sing that song in the film but
then he was
busy. And I had to go abroad when he was free. So Gulzarsaab and I were talking
who we can try
out and he said why don’t you use Bappi for the song. It was a great idea
actually. He just
came from Calcutta and sang the song in two hours flat.

How would you compare the soundtrack of Guru to your last work with Mani
Ratnam, Yuva?

The music of Guru is about rediscovering life. Yuva was actually more like item
numbers, like
fillers rather than actually parts of a film. But here it is all bound
together, in the way
Jaage hai becomes the backbone of the film. Yuva started apologetically — ok,
we will also have
songs. But then here Mani said from the start: “Let’s have songs in the story.”
This is more
like him.

Coming to the song you have done for the United Nations, was Pray for me
brother your idea?

I made the song first because I have been feeling very strongly about this for
quite some time.
You know India is really coming up as a country but at the same time you are
having these
suicides by farmers and there is so much of poverty all around. That inspired
me to make this
song. Blaaze and I have sung it. Then the United Millennium Development Cause
came in.

  Dear friends,

When we set out to raise funds for the A.R.Rahman Foundation as a gift for
ARR's birthday, I
had only planned to send him an image of the cheque by email and the
physical cheque only by
courier. But when the contributions soared past anything I had hoped for,
I felt it was only
fair that it be handed over in person. And so, I set out to Chennai on
Saturday morning not
knowing if I would actually be able to meet him. Though by now, we have
seen enough evidence of
his simplicity I imagined being stopped by security guards even before I
could let him know,
all of which was completely unwarranted.

Thanks to the never-say-no graciousness of ARR and Vijay's entreaties, I
had the good fortune
of being your representative at the birthday celebrations of the person
whom many of us deify.
Far from being met with for a few seconds and summarily dismissed, I was
treated with the same
affection, care and love by everyone at his home and studio as were many
of the key
personalities of the industry who made their way to his abode to greet him
in person.

I made my way to his home with some navigational aid from Vijay to only
find a bunch of busy
workers setting up the place in preparation for lunch. When I said that I
had to meet ARR Sir,
I was asked to wait in the first floor of the studio which is the building
right in front of
his home. I made my way there to find many people doing the same, some of
them being Mr.
Srinivasa Krishnan of Global Rhythms, Sridhar Subramaniam of Sony BMG,
Naresh Iyer, executives
from WorldSpace and Saregama and producers from the Tamil industry whom I
did not recognize. I
could see gifts of flowers from a host of people from the industry -
Subhash Ghai, Udit and
Deepa Narayan, Rajkumar Santoshi, Bharat and Kanika, Chinmayee, Radio
Mirchi, Radio City were
some names that I managed to spot amidst the sea of bouquets in the
studio. ARR's right hand
men Noell James, Sivakumar, Swamidorai, Faiz and H. Sridhar were also in
attendance.

We were soon joined by ARR's mother, daughters, son, wife and sisters and
others in the family.
I soon realized that simplicity and humility runs through every brick and
body in his home and
studio. ARR still hadn't turned up and his mother insisted that we must
have lunch and we were
ushered back into his home where ARR joined us. Soon director Shankar and
family, Kathir,
Krishna (of SOK), Praveenkanth made their way in. After lunch we made our
back to the studio,
were ARR took us to a large studio room on the 2nd floor and screened the
video of Pray For Me
Brother. I am still searching for words to describe the multiple
exhilarating emotions that
passed through me as I watched the video. Nothing we have heard so far in
the live performances
truly captures the brilliance of the recorded song. Who else, but ARR,
could have an Indian
classical harmony accompanying a rap segment?

Following this, both ARR and his son Ameen, who also celebrates his
birthday on the same day,
cut the cake jointly. While his son wanted to cut his special 'Spiderman'
shaped cake, ARR
decided his simpler cake was more appropriate :-)

Coming to the crux of my visit, it was the time after the birthday cake
was distributed and
everyone was leisurely seated around the studio that I chose to hand the
cheque over to ARR. I
wish I could say, 'Did we spring a surprise on ARR or what!' But ARR
instead sprang a surprise
on me! He looked visibly moved and said 'I have been telling these folks
what you guys have
been doing.' I went, Huh? And his response was, 'I was on the group last
night and saw all
these messages about a collection drive. You guys are increasing my
responsibilities now'. I
quickly assured him that he could count on our support in anything that he
wanted to do. he
then handed the cheque over to his mother and introduced me to the rest of
the people there.

He then asked, 'Don't you want a picture?'. I joked, 'I would like you to
say a few words or
else all the folks would think I made off with the money'. He laughed and
agreed. I told him I
could wait till the studio was a little quieter. He said fine and went on
to have a private
conversation with Shankar and then moved away to supervise some dubbing
work for Guru that was
underway at the studio.

Before he left, I mustered the courage to ask him if there was any way I
could get

Totaly agree with Roshan... even our boss mentioned in an award ceremony
that Omkara is his personal favourite.. as a fan of A.R Rahman we should
also appriciate others composition as other composer look up to our bosss.

thanks...

I will have to agree with music award. in fact Omkara is a great
album. I am not comparing RDB and Omkara. while RDB attracted the
youth, Omkara is loved by the matured. so there is nothing wrong in
giving it to Vishal Bharadwaj

but the funny part of the award is giving best Actor award to
Hrithik roshan for his performance in the world's worst movie i have
ever seen.. Krish! that was a real joke.. I didn't know flexing
muscles and dancing can be regarded as acting..

well, its not a matter to discuss here though..
